Improving battery life on K-1

Suggestions? Just the usual...
  • Turn off GPS

  • Turn off rear status display

  • Set auto-review to something short

  • Use live view sparingly

  • Use review feature sparingly

Oh...and don't expect good battery life if video is part of the mix. Also remember that AF uses battery power and some lenses are hungrier than others.

Another way to increase your number of shots per single charge is to use higher capacity aftermarket battery from a reliable supplier.
I am consistently making more than 1,400 shots on a single charge using Powerextra 7.4V, 2300mAh, 17.0Wh D-LI90 compatible battery.
In the same time I rarely can get more than 850 shots on a single charge using Pentax 7.2V, 1860mAh, 14Wh D-LI90 genuine battery which came with my K-1 camera.
Those of you who bought or upgraded to more power hungry K-1 II will benefit from switching to a higher capacity batteries.

I had my K-1 switched on for two consecutive days and shot with it 10 hours in total... never did it happen that I'd only get 100 shots. My standard for 1 battery would be around 1k+

I never use LiveView (it is by far the main drain)... WiFi always off (remote control via phone is also a massive drain), most of the auto adjustments off, instant preview limited to minimum time, auto power off 1 minute

There is a significant difference between SDM/DC lenses and old style screw drive lenses though. In general the screw drives seem to take up less power than in-lens drives.

Today I've tried my DA* 300/4 with the K-1 II, yesterday my DA* 200/2.8. I've never used them with an original K-1 but the AF feels much faster than on my K-3 or K-5 II. The same is true for the DA* 55/1.4.

My Summer project is to capture the drama of the South Georgia Summer skies. Winds from the Gulf of Mexico fuel intense convection over the region.

Where to pick up a used bargain lens in traditional brick 'n' mortar store ?

Good advice. Alternatively, I tend to carry a small flashlight in my pocket, to shine through any lens I might consider purchasing. It can help to show up fungus, haze, scratches, oil on the diaphragm blades etc...

In the UK, Gumtree is worth a look. Occasionally some interesting items come up there, usually at way above market prices, but occasionally significantly under. I've found a couple of bargains over the last year or two.

Another thing to do is look for eBay UK auctions that end between 11pm and 8am, and use a timed proxy bidding (or "sniping") service to place a bid at the last minute, setting the maximum at the upper limit you're happy to pay. Most of the vintage lenses I've bought were acquired that way.

Finally, dig around at car boot sales and antique fairs and other large outdoor / indoor sales. One of my hobbies is amateur radio, and I've picked up a few nice lenses at amateur radio swap-meets from the flea-market and junk sale areas...

That's funny Carol. I am not quite your age, but that is the same logic I used. The new steel roofs are great and have about a 50 year lifespan.

Photokina, Ricoh has Confirmed

It's not really 'bad' at all. I have a nicely refurbished K-1II and more lenses than I know what to do with so I'm quite happy. Ricoh has in my opinion missed out on a number of opportunities but they might have valid reasons for that. Just because they look good from where I sit does not mean that the real numbers work out. But it does seem (to me) that they have not pushed through on some things that they should have if they wanted to grow their market share. But perhaps that is not their plan.
Exactly. I am tired of the roller coaster ride of unrealistic expectations followed by the depths of despair when reality sinks in. So I thought I would throw out some despair prior to the show. :):)

We will get at Photokina:
- Some sort of GR announcement
- A nearly finished DA*11-18
- And ........................ nothing else. Is that bad? Nope. It is the expectation of more that is bad. It's fun now but causes despair later.

Charity shops and pawn shops are a likely source. At established second-hand shops, ask if they ever get camera gear. And if they do, you might give them your name & number so they can call you if they get any Pentax stuff. Church sales, boot sales, and flea markets can also offer bargains.

As for getting bargain prices, it all depends on the seller. Some sellers are sticklers for getting the highest price possible and think everything is a vintage treasure. Others just want to move the junk out as fast as possible. I always haggle unless I know that that seller won't or can't budge.

Oh, and always bring a camera when you shop so you can mount the lens and test it on the spot.

Happy hunting!!!

Pushy ones get more colorful nicknames.

Then there was this guy I ran into last year at Yellowstone. Every time I went to take a shot there he was leaning into the photo. He was a German tourist with a nice Nikon setup. I had an inspiration that rather than get frustrated, I just backed off a bit and included him in the scenes. His wife was always back a bit with their 2 month old son keeping him in the shade where possible. I chatted with her for a bit while he went nuts with his camera. Since they may never make it back he was trying to catch everything he could and she was letting him. Very nice, and patient, lady.

BTW, I know some nature photographers who have a nickname for a lot of the tourists that they come across. They called them tourons. A ranger at Yellowstone put it this way. People coming to the park are on vacation and for about 10% of them, their brains are too.

That's the plan, it's a family visit rather than a photo trip. Though from Glasgow to Dunbeath, we'll take the scenic route going through the Trossachs, Glencoe, Fort William, Fort Augustus, by Loch Ness. Lots of photo opportunities there. I'll take it as an experiment, as I'm planning on paring down my kit at home as well.

During our walk the other day there were several places where we encountered this type of mushroom growing in a dense crowd at the base of a tree, especially (always?) a birch tree.
