Mega: how did you go?

Hmmm. Both Pentax.com.au (Ricoh) and C R Kennedy are showing stock of the KP body (black). But I have received advice from DCXpert that they do not expect to have stock until next month.

Very frustrating - fighting temptation to say what the hell, and buy the KP at full price from Kennedy, and not wait any longer for a possible discount. Grrrrr!

It was an e-bay sponsored thing, but I think it ended yesterday or today. I think the code was PEOFY.

You could try it and see: you need to get all the way to the checkout stage and use the Coupon box.

I have just now (1:00pm Brisbane time) checked with DCxpert that they have one battery grip left and are offering it for $314.10 if you go to the DCxpert store and search for "grip" and then click on the item. Just below their "100% buyer satisfaction" in red slogan you can click on the "show me how" for the lower price.

Sorry for the delayed response.

Well guys, C R Kennedy have the KP back in stock, but no special deals as yet.

The two lenses I wanted to buy (the 55-300mm PLM zoom and the 16-85 mm zoom) not listed currently on DCxpert, but just ordered the Pentax F2.8 D FA WR 100mm macro lens from DCxpert through eBay during the big EOFY discount for $559.00 (Listed price $649.00 at Pentax.com.au).

I may or may not still get the 16-85mm and/or the 55-300mm PLM lenses depending on budget and what else becomes available at a good price.
Still want my KP!!

Thanks for your info, Des. I followed that link: that "snoot" contraption was fascinating, and the two bug shots amazing.

Again, thank you!

Des, do you mind me asking,
1: Did you use any tele-converter or magnifier for those bee (wasp??) shots, or just the 100mm Macro?
and

2: With the 100mm Macro, how close would you have to get to get that kind of shot ( and is what we see here the original, or cropped?)

I am planning, end of June, on a new KP body, and the 55-300 PLM, and either the 16-85mm F3.5-5.6zoom, and/or the 100mm F2.8 Macro, to get some good modern lenses (the bulk of my lens are film-era Pentax M lenses) and am wondering for instance, how close the100mm Macro needs to get compared, say, to my old Pentax M 50mm Macro (which is still doing its job well, subject to how well I use it!!!)

The only working flash I have at the moment is the built-in flash on my K50: probably not that useful for close-ups. Way back in the late 1970s I bought the then very impressive Vivitar "auto-thyristor" 283 Flash with its own (removable) built-in sensor. You could leave the sensor on the camera's hot shoe, and have the flash away from the camera, connected via a cable.

Exactly my reaction GeoJerry: very moody and mysterious. Like a scene from some supernatural movie.

Oh, and I cannot see any differences either!!!

Could this become a "spot the difference" competition subject??

But definitely a beautiful photograph!!

A number of posters mentioned this "back button" focus: what little research I have done suggests to me that this is only relevant with AF lenses???

Yes, Larry, I was surprised no-one had mentioned this too: perhaps everyone took that as a given.

Actually, I played around with that by:
Setting it for my left (shooting) eye while not wearing any specs, and tried that for a few days.

Then set it while wearing my distance specs and tried that for a few days.
And then set it while wearing my reading specs, and tried that for a few days.

To be honest, not sure which of those, if any, were better (in terms of trying to be sure I nailed the focus) but in the end opted for no specs to allow me to get my eye closest to the viewfinder (I have installed the Pentax 1.2 magnifier eyecup - and after doing that, reset the diopter again (while not wearing specs!!!)

But thanks for your attention!

Heh. Thanks, luftfluss: can I put you down as a contributor to my lens fund??

Edit: Oh, by the way, luftfluss, loved that long-haired caterpillar shot of yours!

Thagomizer - thanks for the tips, and so many links follow up.

luftlusss: I have a set of Pentax extension rings circa late 1970s, and have used TCs in the past, but had not heard of gadgets like your Raynox that screw onto the lens filter threads before - will investigate that. Again, thanks

Doundounba: thanks for the pep talk - probably needed that. Have seen some of your pics, and will now search the threads for more. Very impressive.

And re your "Be ethical! Don't be one of those people that passes off shots of insect .....": absolutely!!!

I have really hi-jacked this thread - apologies to everyone on that.

So perhaps one last question more back on thread: I said earlier that my intention (probably around the eofy sales) is to buy a KP, the 55-300mm zoom (plm version), and I was thinking also of the Pentax 16-85mm zoom, thus giving me two modern AF lenses to complement all my old legacy primes.

But am now wondering if I might be better off looking at the PENTAX-D FA 100mm f/2.8 WR Macro Lens.

In two minds about trading the flexibility of the focal range of the 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 for the faster prime macro lens??

Comments?

Thank you very much for your suggestions, David. I obviously have a lot of experimenting to with all these different suggestions - flash; no flash; tripod; 2-second delay, auto iso, set iso, be smart with aperture/depth of field, superfast shutter speed.

Ok - many of those actions will help reduce if not eliminate most sharpness probs not related to poor focus: just got to find a way of getting better at getting the focusing right.

And I really must try live view focusing/framing - someone suggested it in another thread, but still haven't tried it!!

Again, thanks everyone for your time and suggestions - much to think about and experiment with.

Thanks for that, mattt: I notice a lot of the exif data did not come through with my posted pics. Something to do with the software I used to convert from RAW (.dng) to jpeg?? Of course, with manual lenses, the exif does not seem to include aperture setting anyway (have I got that correct?)

I "knew" about "catch in focus" in so far as I recalled seeing something about it in the manual while browsing through it, but had somehow tricked myself into thinking that was for af lenses, and particularly when tracking a moving subject. A re-read just now shows that it is intended for use with manual lenses, so I will experiment with that. Am I correct in thinking that after setting "Catch in focus" you are meant to continue focusing? I can imagine, esp with my 200mm I would be getting a lot of camera wobble - even on a tripod. Could you also clarify "back button focus setting"?

I bought my K50 late last year - had not touched a camera since about 1982 - so still coming to terms with the multitude of settings on a digital camera cf the K2 and ME film cameras I used back then. I do try to remember to switch shake reduction on or off depending on whether I am shooting hand-held or tripod.

I have also purchased a Pentax O-ME53 Viewfinder Loupe magnifying eyecup but it only marginally helps with manual focus. Really hoping the purchase of the EC-A central microprism focusing lens will help me with manual focus. So often I find it difficult to pinpoint when I have a subject in focus -esp with the 200mm, even with the help of the focus beep and the little focus symbol in the viewfinder.

When I see photographs like those included here, I sometimes wonder why I even bother trying!!

(See a sample of some of my "good" pics here: Photos Posted By K2 to K50 - Pentax User Photo Gallery)

My shots were mostly hand-held (just one or two on a tripod). A variety of lenses:
Pentax-M 1:4 50mm Macro
Pentax-M 1:2 85mm
Pentax-M 1:3.5 135mm
Pentax-M 1:4 200mm

Some with an extension ring (or two) between camera and lens.

All manual focus - which I know I am having trouble with. Miss the central prism focusing screen on my old 1970's K2 film camera!! Seriously considering purchasing the EA-C focusing screen from Focusingscreens.com if and when I buy the KP to see if that can improve my manual focusing accuracy.

Thing is, seriously hoping to replace my 2nd hand K50 (which I did drop once -about a 2 foot drop onto stone) with a KP, and buying a 55-300mm PLM zoom, and either the 16-85mm zoom, or the 100mm Macro.

Guys, how many of you can help me by letting me know:
1: How many of you do these amazing shots hand-held as opposed to using a tripod - or is this a stupid question!!
2: How often do you get these shots using autofocus, how often with manual focus?
3: Is a Flash often used for this photographs??

4: Other techniques used or not used: delay and/or mirror lockup; remote or cable shutter release?

Hope I am not being presumptuous in asking for this kind of help. Most of the shots in this thread are nothing short of mind-boggling to me.
