Welcome!

I want to encourage you to go down the film path. That‘s how I started. Both, the cost of each roll of film and the time necessary for post-processing lead to conscious and more focused photography. You need to get it right when you take the picture.

I wouldn‘t go back to film, but feel I still profit from the lessons learned there.

Poor corner IQ with the 16-85 ist most likely due to decentering. I have returned two copies of it for this reason. The third copy has good IQ in the corners, even though you can see hints of decentering.

Rather than resorting to a significantly larger and heavier FF lens as redemdy I'd suggest to go for another copy of the 16-85 or an APS-C alternative like the 16-50.

Hello Maishy,

your itinerary contains a huge variety of potential pictures, from large buildings to landscapes to distant scenes/details/animals.

For me this calls for a broad range of focal lengths, from quite wide to serious tele. One could even see this trip as a good reason to buy an additional lens ... .

So bringing the 18-55 plus the 70-300 would be a no-brainer for me. Or, if taking pictures is not that important on this trip and you want to go light, only the 18-200. On my last (river) cruise I took a lot of pictures with my tele lens, that‘s why I suggest you do not leave it at home. YMMV, though.

I‘ve been waiting and searching since February, but so far no review of the 11-18. I suspect the first and only review will be published here at pentaxforums ...

Hej maximum_squirrel,

Welcome to the forums! A K3-II is a good choice for enjoying the great outdoors you have in Sweden (and bring home plenty of pics).

How about the free Microsoft Movie Maker? It is a rather easy tool, but depending on your needs it may be good enough.

It did the job for me when making a slide show for my parents golden anniversary.

Welcome.

I‘ve spend my youth exposing and developing Orwo film rolls. That‘s how I could afford photography as a student. Good stuff.

I‘m looking forward to you sharing how you see the world through a pentax view finder.

An interesting fact about 31mm limited!

I've seen similar behavior with several fast lenses, too.

My explanation is that vignetting causes this effect. Fast lenses tend to have significant vignetting wide open and less vignetting when the aperture gets more closed.

You'd expect that the meter in the camera gets more light at f=1.8 than at f=2.0, since geometrically the lens is wider open . Hoewever, due to the stronger vignetting at f=1.8 the amount of light the meter collects may be nearly the same as at f=2.0, resulting in same shutter speed with same ISO.

With my Samyang 2.8/10mm the camera has even a tendency to overexpose wide open by as much as one full stop, which becomes insignificant when the lens is stepped down to f=8. That behavior caused me to search for the root cause. At first I was wondering if the aperture mechanism of the lens was working correctly. But then I noticed the same effect (to a lesser extend) with another fast lens.

As long as the deviation is only 1/3 EV I wouldn't worry about it.

Release of the DA* 11-18 was significantly delayed due to „assuring top quality“ (not sure about the exact term).

What were the biggest challenges during development of this lens?
