Two weeks in Spain: Which ONE lens to take?

I see what you were saying...that's good advice. I hadn't really even considered the 40mm XS until you mentioned it. Looking at images of that lens mounted on a K5, I realize how small it really is. Amazing.

Thanks again, I've got two weeks to decide!

I'm willing to take a second lens, however I'm REALLY trying to keep my kit as small as possible (I have enough to carry around with the baby stuff!). I agree, the 40mm XS is tiny...I just don't own it!

I'm considering taking the kit lens for the wide angle requirements and perhaps a DA35mm f/2.4 (a lens I'd wanted to buy & try anyways) for a primary, walk around & family/people lens.

Thoughts?

Plan B is to rent a 16-50 f/2.8 & be done with it...

hchan: I'd say a mixture but biased towards photos of people (family) and in this case some landscape (first time to Spain.)

psychdoc: I travel for a living but probably won't be back in Spain with my family for a long time. I agree, the kit-lens focal length is acceptable, but it's a tad slow and not as sharp as I'd like. I use my M 50 f/1.7 99% of the time as it's really sharp and has fantastic color reproduction.

Thanks!

I'm traveling to Spain over the holidays and want to get by with one lens on my K20. I'll be with my family (including my 1 year old son) which is why I want a light, extremely portable kit. I'm considering the DA35 f/2.4. Any other suggestions?

I currently own:
M 50 f/1.7
M 28 f/3.5
DA 18-55 (Kit Lens)
Vivitar 70-210 f/2.8-4 Series 1

I love MF but the little guy is walking now and AF is a must for this trip.

Thanks!

I'm from Sturgeon Bay. I know Glidden Drive well. I used to go out there during the hot summers and swim in the lake to cool off. I thought that was quarry park! My wife's Aunts all worked at Al J's...love that place!

Sell or keep my kit lens?

+1 for keeping it. The 18-55 Pentax lens is IMHO a GREAT deal better than any of it's peers. Coupled with the new k-r, you've got a formidable package. Don't trust us though...open the box, mount the lens and get shooting! Check out the Kit Lens Club thread. I think you'll be very impressed with the results. If nothing else, it makes for a pretty nice 18mm f/3.5 wide angle lens!!

Best of luck and happy shooting.

Pentax shops in Pittsburgh PA area

Pittsburgh is a very photogenic city. As for Pentax gear, I actually found a place on my last trip to Pitt. that carries a fair amount of older Pentax glass. It's a small shop just adjacent to PPG Place. I don't remember the name (sorry!) but it has a orange neon sign that says "Camera Repair" over the door. The easiest way to find it is to find the new Fairmont Hotel downtown, walk out the front door and turn left....go one short block and the shop is on your right. They specialize in older film bodies and vintage lenses. When I was there two weeks ago, he had a Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7 NEW in the orig. box

Have a great trip!

Lens question...

Hi all,

I've searched the forum high & low and I can't seem to find what I'm looking for about the Auto Promaster MC 135mm f/2.8.

I have the opportunity to buy one but I can't find any info about it. Did it even come in a K mount (will it work without having to file or grind anything?). I don't want to try to mount it on my K20D if there's a risk of getting it stuck!

Any info. would be greatly appreciated!

K20D Viewfinder Question

I recently noticed a small tear on the rubber part of my K20's viewfinder. While shooting an event yesterday, the rubber viewfinder (eyecup?) tore almost completely off the camera.

My question...

I'd like to replace the part but I'm not exactly sure what I need. Do I need a viewfinder, eyecup or something else? I don't think I NEED a magnifying viewfinder (though I do use manual lenses frequently).

What should I be looking for???

Thanks!

Great post! I just added my first M lens (the 50mm f/1.7) and I too am thrilled with the images I'm getting from it. The legacy glass and build quality attracted me to Pentax (along with this forum!) and I'm happy to be part of the "family."

Happy shooting!
