KP vs K-1 question

I have several A3 size prints on my walls at home from both cameras, and you'd be hard pressed to to pick a difference.
Considerably larger prints might reveal a gap, but they are generally meant to be viewed from further back.

Excellent choice. The DA21 is one of my reasons for always keeping a crop system.

Yes, and no, in that order. As explicitly stated in my earlier post.
I'm dining out in Melbourne tonight, and have the DFA28-105 with me. I'll see what I can do.

I haven't yet used my DFA28-105 in such situations, but I've been very happy with the DFA24-70 for low lit indoor events.

Take them all. Use them all.
Lighting, posing and connection with the subject are more important than the lens.

DxO score for Pentax 645Z: 101!

According to this egregiously belated review, the 645Z has a pixel shift AA filter simulator. News to me.

Seriously, how can anyone trust a single thing DxO Mark writes?

I really like my FA*24, but I tend to pack the DFA15-30 instead when I'm shooting wide.
I've sent you a PM....

The sample images look amazing! I certainly couldn't justify one, but there will be some who can.

The DFA*85/1.4 will hopefully be a better solution in this genre and sell like hot cakes.

50-135 versus 70-200 in IQ?

If you're sticking with crop, my recommendation would be to get the DA*50-135. Its rendering is beautiful, the build quality, handling and weather sealing are superb, and the size and weight make it a trivial carry.

I have had my DFA*70-200 for over 18 months, but as I don't rely on photography for an income I'm seriously reconsidering the wisdom of keeping it. Although it is a spectacular image maker, the size, and especially weight, means it rarely gets packed. To me, full frame really makes a difference with wider lenses, so I can more easily justify the weight of a lens like the DFA15-30 for the unique opportunities it provides. The case is much weaker when it comes to longer telephotos.

Pentax-DA 15mm F4 distortion vs Pentax HD Pentax DA 21mm f/3.2

Absolutely correct on all three points. The "distortion" you are seeing is due to perspective.

The second image does indeed show extreme barrel distortion, but that is the point of fisheye lenses.

Downgrading from a Nikon D750 to KP or Fuji XT2?

The KP is a brilliant camera. Your DA40 limited is a perfect match for it.

Apart form the first shot (which shows the kit I took on the trip), every other shot in THIS ALBUM was made with it. Several of them are now A3 prints in my home.

Pentax-DA 15mm F4 distortion vs Pentax HD Pentax DA 21mm f/3.2

Sorry, but you have obviously not owned either of these lenses.

67mm filter diameter with a HUGE screw-on hood, vs 49mm and a tiny minimalist hood which is integrated with the front cap.
Big six point stars vs the signature slender 14 pointers of the (SMC) DA15 and DA21
Fair flare resistance vs second only to the unrivalled DA15.
f/2.8 vs f/3.2 is not much of a difference, especially with the high-ISO capabilities of modern crop cameras.
The FA20 is also considerably more expensive used than the DA21 is new. And it's hard to find.

If you're planning to stick with a crop system, the FA20/2.8 makes no sense. I regret selling mine, but that's mainly because of the size of the DFA15-30 as its alternative on full frame.

But I agree that the DA15 is a uniquely wonderful ultra-wide lens, despite its pretty mediocre edge sharpness. It (along with the DA21 and DA35 macro) is one of the reasons I remain invested in the crop ecosystem.

Pentax-DA 15mm F4 distortion vs Pentax HD Pentax DA 21mm f/3.2

You are quite correct. You have the wrong idea.

As others have said, this is perspective, not distortion. Ultra-wide lenses exaggerate it, but the only way to avoid it for this sort of shot is to climb a very tall ladder, process the bejeezus out of it, or get a tilt shift lens.

Different lens (considerably wider in fact), same problem:

Back on topic, I find the DA21 to be a really useful general purpose lens, with a very natural angle of view on crop. It definitely has some barrel distortion, but unless you're shooting brick walls it's not much of an issue. The DA15 is a wonderfully compact ultra-wide, but will always be a niche lens for me. The famous flare resistance of the 15 is almost matched by the 21, and the starbursts (I'm talking about the SMC variants here) are equal.

The newer 55-300 variants (screw drive or PLM) are seriously good value for money.
If you want better than they can offer, forget about "cheap".

contemplating a purchase of da300..

If I did this sort of stuff a lot, or for a living, I would agree.

But its size and weight are next level. The DA*300 fits in all my camera bags - some of which are quite small. Add the teleconverter and you get similar reach at the same aperture and a 77mm filter diameter, albeit with less impressive AF performance.

I'm going on a bucket list trip to Antarctica in a year's time, and I'm still vacillating over this choice. As things currently stand I'm sticking with my DA*300 and HD1.4xTC. Hiring a DFA150-450 for a month is the next option....

[flame shields up]I don't understand the DA*60-250 as a birding lens. If it's a bird small enough that you need to get close, you may as well shoot with a 135mm prime. If the bird is miles away, 250mm is not nearly long enough.

It's a great option for landscapes and big game though.[/flame shields down]

The DA*300 (with or without the teleconverter) is more than adequate for my occasional and unambitious attempts at birding.

Hmmmm. Maybe i should pull my finger out and do this more often.

K-1 Crop Function

Yeah, but it performs quite differently with different lenses. With the DA*300 specifically, it vignettes significantly on the K-1 in full frame mode. That was all I was claiming.

Using my computer screen as an evenly lit light source, one at infinity focus and one at MFD:

I didn't know you had the DA*300 Norm. It's a pretty significant vignette in my opinion. With other lenses it is not so bad.

Anyway, shooting in crop mode gives you more room on the card, AF points nearly all the way to the edges, and quicker burst shooting, so there are some advantages.
