Pentax Canada - Stain on Sensor

DJB77, how do you check the "internal" serial number?

I had my K5 repaired by Pentax Canada recently, they had told me 4 weeks turn-around time, it took exactly that. There was confusion at one point as to wether my cam had been returned to Japan for repair but it appeared at the end Pentax Canada did the repair themselves (I'm glad it did not go to Japan...). The Sensor Assembly was replaced as per the repair bill. One thing curious though, I had a small scratch on the back screen which is gone now. Also, the two little leather tabs that protect the strap loops were replaced as well... curious... The body serial number is the same (3858xxx) but I now suspect they may have just slapped the old bottom cap on a new body (or a refurb???). Hence my curiosity about checking the "internal" s/n...

Yes, Pentax Canada (Mississauga Office) is an authorized Pentax repair facility. They even repaired my DA*50-135 themsleves for faulty SDM once. The repair didn't last very long and it was subsequently replaced for a new one. I understand however that replacing an SDM is probably less involving that replacing a sensor assembly ... I really have no qualms about Pentax Canada sending my K5 to Japan for repair. My problem is why not informing the Client up front of that possibility? Why do I have to learn 3 weeks after the facts that my Cam is being re-directed to Japan? What happened during these 3 weeks? did they even looked at it at all? Will I get my original body back? a new replacement? a refurb? This is basic Customer satisfaction stuff...

Yep... brought my K-5 to Pentax Canada on February 7th for repair related to the stained sensor. Although they assured me the only 2 possible outcomes would be that either they fix it locally or replace it; I learned last week that my K5 was on its way to Japan for repair... They also initially assured me that this would be a max. turnaround time of 10-15 days. Credibility => 0

Forgot to metion, they can't even tell me when it will be back....

+1. Thanks you and agreed. I've been trying to say this for a while now, but you succeeded better than me. You will notice however that (some) "Site Supporters" are given much more lattitude than others... This is quite distracting and adds no value whatsoever.

Good for you! But I'm not sure what this has to do with anything... There are other here with 30+ years experience in photography... Yours truly has 35+ actually . All Pentax since day 1. So what? I'm still interested in reading how things develop on this matter.

There is in fact a very simple solution to this problem: if you don't like a thread, just ignore it. Leave the so-called "whinners" debate the matter among themselves and move on! Should not be so much of a challenge?

Peace!

 Nope... perhaps in exchange for Bettie... In fact, I'm not using either very much anymore. They are very good lenses optically, but they are showing their age otherwise: FA*28-70 => no internal focusing, rotating front element, heavy weight... FA*80-200 => superb optically but this thing is like carrying an anvil around! I wish they could re-issue the optical formula in a more "user friendly" package! There was a time I was shooting "semi" pro, I used to carry around two pZ-1p with the above lenses around my neck... that might explain my deviated cervical disks today! :D In fact, I haven't even tried them on my k5 yet

JeffJS, nice collection! I particularly like the Gretsch ladies and the 340! Rare! Is that a stainless steel pickguard on the strat? Nice!
Here are my ladies. Not exactly a collection but all played regularly, especially the 1982 Jazz-Bass. I am primarly a Bass player. This one is really tweaked with a BadAss II bridge and 2 BassLines "hot" pickups and extra shielding...

Now for the Pentax part (so that it does not get deleted by the Moderators), I believe I took this with the K5 (or was it the K7? and DA12-24

Address withheld...

Just to give an idea of the other side of the spectrum, in my case, the situation is not as bad as JeffJS... This is one of the ~200 pictures I took on the week-end, all close-ups, f11 and smaller with ring-flash. This is a crop, the stain is visible between the 2 lines. As I said before this is PP-able, but takes time...

Holy Stain Batman!
I would venture saying that you probably win first price for worse case... I have about 5% of what you're showing there and it's bugging me...
However, as I said earlier, Hoya is probably experiencing a shortage of "good" parts currently, hence the slow turn around... Not trying to find excuses, but rather a rationale... Same here... I did "look for" the stain back in December after 1 month of shooting. Couldn't find anything. Then last week-end...

I agree with your assessement of the SDM snafu. I had my DA*50-135 replaced, then fixed (plus a DA*16-50 with a failed SDM as well, fixed). It would have been easier to swallow the pill if the screw-drive was functional, but... anyway, old topic. Both are amazing lenses however, optically.

BTW, is that a Fender Jaguar? vintage? Looks like it's in great shape! Like the
color too. I have a 57 Strat, 2 tone sunburst with "v" neck myself... It needs a paint job but still plays great!

Geez guys... OK... I'm perplexed now. But FWIW, when I returned my 50-135SDM (twice), the first time it was an "on-the-spot" replacement, the second time they repaired it within a week. Excellent service in my book... On the other hand I can understand that they may have a shortage of new sensors currently, and maybe even short of new bodies due to this "recall" situation. At least you know it will get fixed, eventually.

I was breaking-in my new D-FA100 WR on the week-end at the Royal Botanical Garden. Awesome lens! Found-out however that I have a stained sensor, small dot right smack in the center with a very faint string of smaller dots to the left. Made sure it wasn't dust. Oh well... I reported previously I did not had the stain, but I guess it developped with time...
I have to mention here that it is absolutely not visible on anything else than Macro shots taken at F11 and smaller. But there it is in all my shots. Easy to PP out, but still...

Here are the good news:

Just got off the phone with Pentax Canada (Dan). Very nice fellow, he indicated that problem is known to them and that they are initiating a "mitigation" program. I am dropping off my camera body on Thursday with proof of purchase (I work a couple blocks from their Mississauga office) and, depending on the amplitude of the problem, they will either replace it or repair it. He also indicated that these are given priority for a quick turn around. Stay tuned!
Seems like we are getting some action here...

Nice! We can always count on some of those "Site Supporters" with 1500+ posts to call a newcomer a "throll". Here's a newsflash for you SMC: His opinion is no less credible or "a propos" than yours! In fact, your credibility just went down a few notches in my book.
I see nothing closely resembling throlling in Maxn's post. I actually gave him a rep. You remind me of another "site supporter" here that keeps calling "hysteria" for anything not aligned with his personal opinions... You guys need to show a little more tolerance...

Amen and +1!
There are tons of people on this forum who are true experts and are extremely resourceful. You see them in all forums, form K5, to lenses, to troubleshooting, to general.
Then, you have the other extreme: Those who "think" or want us to believe they are experts.
Some people who have 6000+ posts, claim they have all sorts of expertise and experience; they want you to believe they are part of an "elite" and yet, a good 90% of their posts are used to ridicule and downplay other people's posts, mostly newcomers. They also feel they are allowed to do this, use agressive language, call people names, etc. because they DO have 6000+ posts, and they DO send $10 a year to the forum to have "Site Supporter" written next to their names....
Those know who they are... You guys are an irritant.
This is a Forum. It is open to ANYBODY who has an opinion on any Pentax matter. As Snydly says: you don't like something, just ignore it. Go shoot pictures.

FWIW to the OP: My K5 does not have the stains, but it slightly front focuses in low light and SOME lenses. It is not enough for me to leave it on the shelf, far from there. I consider it is still 99% fully functional in my case as I only do about 5-7% low light work. The k5 is still superior in almost every respects than my older K7. When needed, I apply good old fashion manual settings. But, I know how you feel, and can empathize with you considering you seem to be doing more low light work than I.

I am experiencing an increase in overexposure as I am reducing the shooting distance on a static subject. When I get, say, 50 cm or closer to the subject, using my Sigma 70, I have to dial-in anything from -0.5 to -2EV compensation. I dial-it in on the flash first, but it is only adjustable to -1EV. After that, I have to compensate in-camera.

The other issue I am having is that the modelling LED's are not working properly on my example of the AF160. It is constatntly flickering on one side only, which is likely abnormal. I am not really using it so I think I will tough it out...

Otherwise, once the exposure is correct, it is giving me great results.

I am thinking of getting the D-FA100WR as well... let me know what you think if you get it first!
