Use manual focus. Set the lens for the distance you want to your subject and expose when the fireflies at close to that distance.

Of course B&H would not claim it is moving to screw workers. As with most disputes, both sides try to make themselves look good.

Support B&H workers

B&H Photo workers in Brooklyn faced horrific safety conditions for years. They fought back, organized for over a year, and overwhelmingly voted to form a union with United Steelworkers in November 2015 -- with crucial support from B&H Photo costumers -- thousands from the photo, video, art, music, and labor communities.

Now the company threatens to relocate almost 330 jobs 75 miles away, making it impossible for the workers to commute to work.

Moving hundreds of jobs away from New York City is a betrayal to working families, New Yorkers, and the workers who courageously fought to be treated with respect and dignity. And that ain't right!

Resolution testing of the FA50/2.8 showed the highest scores at f8. It surprises me that the current version would peak two stops earlier.

I have used a Nikkor 105 enlarging lens with a mount cemented to a 6X7 body cap mounted on a 6X7 helicoid extension tube. You will need to stop down manually.

Pentax A 24mm 2.8 vs Sigma 24mm 2.8

There was a shootout online the compared 24mm lens converted to use on Canon. The Sigma made it farther than the Pentax. I have one of the manual focus Sigma's 24/2.8. It is a decent lens. The color is different than Pentax, but that can be tweaked in PP.

The Samyang 14mm and sharpness....

Ultra-wide angle lenses usually have considerable curvature of the focal plane, so you need to focus on one spot of the chart, the same spot in the same part of the frame for each lens tested. Different focal lengths complicate that, but you should be able to get worthwhile information from the process.

---------- Post added 01-22-17 at 06:58 PM ----------

I often zone focus my sigma 8-16. There is not much to see unless I use live view, which is not always desirable.

So we are talking about bokeh, not the characteristics of in-focus areas of an image?

---------- Post added 01-22-17 at 01:37 PM ----------

Perhaps my eyes are not up to snuff. I do not see what makes that image dreamy. Would the same scene in the same lighting taken through a different lens be undreamy? It seems to me that any characteristic that a lens lends an image should be able to be described using measurable optical terms like resolution, contrast, micro-contrast, diffusion, circle of confusion, etc.

Yes. What is the meaning of smoothness in the images produced by a lens beyond smearing?

---------- Post added 01-21-17 at 08:16 PM ----------

Not everything, just this, which makes no sense to me at this point.

What do you get from a smooth or creamy lens that you could not get with PP noise reduction? when I turn up noise reduction, my images get very smooth, not that I find that an improvement.

The Samyang 14/2.8 is not small or light, but it is inexpensive and fast, and has great image quality.

Older wide angle lenses often work poorly on digital because of the low angle with which light hits the sensor edges.

Diffraction barrier is a term used in microscopy to note the limit of resolution in optical systems of about 1/2 wavelength of the light used. How does staying "under diffraction barrier" do anything for your images?

Focus method in landscape photography

Focus method depends on situation. What should be in focus? Can everything desired be in focus at a reasonable aperture? Sometimes setting the hyper focal distance is all that is needed. Sometimes near-focus and far-focus points should be determined to set a mid-point. Magnified live view is the most accurate way to do that.

50mm for landscapes, what is your favorite and why?

50mm would no be my choice for landscape on APS-C if I carried only one lens, but ~10-20% of my exposures will be at 50mm. It is not unusual for me to use the DA70 on landscapes. Longer lenses get less use.

---------- Post added 09-02-16 at 12:35 AM ----------

Do you shoot landscapes wide open? If not, f1.2 is probably not worthwhile.

Do you autofocus landscapes? If not, the A50/2.8 has extremely high resolution, is built well, and costs less than the FA version.

So then the aphorism does not suggest that equipment - such as sharp lenses - is unimportant, but that it is so important that advanced photographers always have the good stuff.

If you tried Win8 or Win10, you would miss Microsoft even less. They are terrible operating systems for a computer.

Prime Lens IQ at Different Focus Distances
Posted By civiletti

It depends on lens design. Those with floating elements should be best corrected for various focal distances. Those without are likely weakest at minimum focus distance. Perhaps portrait lenses are optimized for that working distance. Process lenses are optimized for 1:1 reproduction.
