K-3 firmware update: KAF4 mount support

Thanks for the info.

So you can only choose one mode of sharpening and, the level for that. You cannot set an individual level simultaneously for each mode of sharpening.

I always had in my mind that you can, like an graphic equalizer. But then again as I wrote, I'm more of a RAW shooter an very seldom look into the JPEG settings :D.

Thanks! I only tried updating JPEG settings recently, after the update to be exact. I'm primarily a RAW shooter :).

But the setting works as expected in my K-30. Surprising that this 'bug' is already 2 versions old.

I have updated to 1.30. When I customize the JPEG settings, the settings for Sharpness, Fine, and Extra cannot be set individually.

When I select one of the sharpness settings and adjust, the adjustment is also applied to the other two settings. At least that is what is displayed.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I know right? Like car companies can't make their own tires! The horror!

Seriously Pentax has been rebranding lenses for quite some time.

This strategy saves any company resources (time and money) getting a product out.

If the end result is worth it, why not?

Hyperfocal distance setting

Thanks for the replies :).

I guess the current focus mechanism isn't designed for this, where the camera only turns the focus ring until the AF module says stop.

But the 'old' lenses have distance scales, maybe something can be determined electronically for each AF lens, and the camera just needs to know how much turning it has to do for a given set of parameters.

There are some who use it, and if this can be done using firmware updates, it sort of makes up for the missing lens markings.

LIke I mentioned, it can be another unique feature :).

Anyone uses hyperfocal distance? Maybe Pentax can add a 'hyperfocal distance' setting for modern (read no lens marking) lenses where the cam sets the focus for any given aperture.

This can be done by firmware update, right? Could be another unique Pentax feature.

Excuse me while I go to the patent office... :P

With my K-30, I choose to turn it off for a different reason: It starts up faster than waking up from sleep mode.

K-3 flash exposure

I got the latest firmware on the K-30.
You can compare flash behaviour in auto (green mode) and P mode.
I know you don't buy a DSLR to use in auto mode, but just to see my point.

K-3 flash exposure

Thanks clackers, but it can be easier. The DS like the K-3 did not have this exposure bias.

It was faster to work with. No need to compensate.

I actually had to use my 360 in manual mode, not that it's a bad thing, but I bought the flash for its P-TTL capability :)

There may be a number of threads like this already, but this is another positive post for the K-3 flash exposure.

I can use my 360 in PTTL again.

After the DS, the K-r and the K-30 favors fill flash or slow exposure with flash. It would have been nice if this can be overridden (not in manual of course) by a setting.

I'll think about it... :)

Seriously I don't think it should change any current behavior of the SR, just add on top of them.

Thanks clackers. But I already have a patent that I'm waiting to become an industry standard.

I have a grip design that will allow the camera to be used upside down, turned 180 degrees. This will benefit all left handed shooters out there.

Thanks rawr. I actually think it's simple enough to implement.

Well, it would can be an additional option. Like:
Off
On
Auto

I'm not suggesting there is no Off option.

In the meantime, I'm off to patent office... :D

Here's an idea. Maybe Pentax can add an SR setting where it only kicks in when the body detects the shutter speed does not meet the 1/fl rule of thumb?

That way you don't need to wait for the SR to engage when you don't really need to, or have to manually turn it off/on.

Another plus for the IBIS system :).

The K5 / IIs have 14bit raw, as in the K-3. I've been using 12-bit RAW all along :).

To me it's not much about color shift, but rather lack of contrast in the K-3.

But yes, metering is more accurate compared to previous models I owned.

So I finally got a K-3, after using low-end Pentax models for 7 years. I've been using a K-30 before this. I have two questions :).

I've been reading you'll need high quality lens to take advantage of the sensor. Does that mean IQ of an 18-55 kit lens (or any consumer grade lens for that matter) will be worse on a K-3 than on any current 16mp sensor, or just the same? It could take a while before I can afford the better Pentax lenses :D

I also have been using natural color mode all along, except for the first couple of months when I got into this hobby, which I only used green mode :). I have read that the color from the K-3 is 'different', I think cooler is the correct term? But my initial impression was that it lacked some pop as the previous models I used (also in natural mode). Can it be the higher dynamic range of the sensor, making the images more 'flat' than the previous 12-bit models? I'm comparing shots (not methodically though) taken with the 35 2.4 and 50 1.8 primes.

As a side note, those two lenses above have very good contrast on my K-30.

Overall I'm happy with the K-3, and the 18-135 lens that came with it :).
