fast lens for lowlight

im pretty new to photography and certainly don't know every word used here, but i'm trying!

im talking nightlife in clubs, bars, concerts, where sometimes there is almost no light to work off of other than a lamp the dj is using. therefore, it's really hard for me to use manual because i can't even see anything...

am i concluding correctly that investing in something like the DA40 would help to focus a little bit faster, and that my kit lense is pretty slow with focusing?

i was standing for about 4 full seconds before my camera decided to take this picture.

in another part of the club where the light was behind the subjects, my camera didnt work at all

and in a better part where everything is lit, it's no problem

i assume that with a better camera, this wouldn't be as big of a problem. but i also think that i have more to learn with the istd and that nightlife photography shouldn't really be as hard as this is seeming to be.

i obviously have to do some research on fast lenses and what they do/how they work.

but my big questions i: im using a pentax istd for nightlife photography. it takes so long for my camera to focus or even want to take the pictures-so frustrating!!

i wasnt sure if this meant that i just need to go ahead and invest in a better camera, but i want to explore the idea of a faster lense first.

i'm currenlty just using the kit lense that came with it, and a fisheye lense i have acts the same way.

anyone know if this would improve my situation??

no you found the right one. it actually arrived looking a bit differently. there's an off button-a front curtain sync-and a back curtain sync. i have tried different camera settings-but i believe this flash is what needs to be set.
i'll try pushing in the flash in fully to see if that's the problem.

i'm wondering if maybe the af illuminator is defective? im exchanging it this weekend...

P-TTL problem with istd??

so this is where i think i get confused. the pre-flash is to determine how strong the flash should be for proper exposure?
i was hoping p-ttl would help me out with the low light i encounter going to concerts and venues. do you think it will help in that case?

either way-the flash doesn't work in anything but a bright room. i'm assuming it's defective, so i'll return it and see if another ones works.

*ist d does support p-ttl flashes from what i understand. p-ttl causes a flash before taking the picture so that the camera can see enough to focus. mine, however, is not doing this preflash-that's my problem

???

P-TTL problem with istd??

i shoot nightlife photos, so i need something for very lowlight.

after not doing my reseach, i purchased a regular sunpak flash and realized it didn't help at all.
i read about the p-ttl system, so i invested in the Digital Concept 918AF. i needed a (cheap) flash to autofocus with an assist before i could shoot the picture-otherwise i can't see what i'm doing!

i read a great review of it on here-problem is, mine's not working! since i'm new to working with p-ttl, i'm wondering if i'm doing something wrong. i've tried p, tv, av, manual setting-no assist. the flash is fine in bright light, but does absolutely nothing in the dark.

is this a setting? or is possible the flash is defective?? or did ebay lie to me, and it's not even compatible with an istd???

not sure if anyone is still reading this thread,
but i just bought this flash off of ebay. i read the review and was very excited to try it out.
i'm doing nightlife photography so i have to shoot in very low light, and i needed a flash with p-ttl capability.

so far, it's doing nothing p-ttl! it doesn't recognize anything in even moderate lowlight.

unless i'm misunderstanding what this flash does-i need it to preflash so the camera has something to autofocus on, and then it will take the picture.

i've tried it in av, tv, manual, program mode. nothing is making it do this. what am i doing wrong??
