SMC Pentax-A 50mm f1.2 dissasembiy guide?

No, I can't find it in photos. Not even if I focus all my autism on finding it. You're going to say that I should just leave it. And you're right. But I still want it gone. Especially if it turns out to be a very simple procedure. That's why I'm trying to find out how to do it.

SMC Pentax-A 50mm f1.2 dissasembiy guide?

I just bought a very nice copy of the SMC Pentax-A 50mm f1.2 again. Again, because I sold my copy a few years back and I've regretted it ever since. It looks brand new. No scuffs, no marks, no haze, no fungus or oil. I think I bought it from someone who's very careful with their gear, like myself. Everything is original, hood, box, caps. I love it...

Except for one big dust particle right in the middle, just on the inside of the rear element! I can't not look at it. I can't ignore it. When I look at the lens, all I see is that big chunk of dust. It's there and I want to get it out.

Does anybody know a good disassembly guide?

I found one here on the forum, that doesn't show access to the rear element. And I found another one on the internet with the same shortcoming. I tried to follow the guide of a Pentax-A 50mm f2, but that's very different. That has notches on the back so you can unscrew the rear element with a lens spanner. Mine does not have such notches.

Thanks everybody for the advise.

I've been able to resolve the issue for the buyer. I advised him to disable all in-camera processing options. And that resolved the issue. There was indeed a very big delay. And I never noticed that because I always shot RAW only. Prior to the sale I reset the camera to factory defaults & put it on green mode which effectively enabled all the processing.

But I do need to refrain from selling stuff until I get my anxiety under control again.

In person. Which I vastly prefer, to avoid these types of situations. I had asked him to bring one of his own lenses so he can sit down and properly test it. Which he did. I think he fiddled around with it for over half an hour.

It think this only applies to stores. Not for second hand goods that are sold by private persons.

Last year I bought the K-1II for a good price. After that I slowly sold all my many many APSC lenses and bought a few good FF lenses. That was the goal: a smaller better kit! This Saturday I sold my old K-5IIs. I didn't really want to part with it, but keeping it and never using it seemed silly.

Now the guy that bought my camera keeps messaging me about how that there is a very big delay between taking a shot and seeing the image on the back LCD screen. I only saw the messages today, two days later. And he's already accusing me of ripping him off, because I hadn't responded yet. Honestly, the camera was functioning very well. It only had 10k shutter actuations. And I'm so careful with my stuff, it didn't even have any usage marks. It could go right back in the shop's display as new. It sure is true that it has a slow write speed, but it's also a 12 year old camera with speeds to match the technology of that day.

This situation is giving me so much anxiety that I'm about to offer to buy it back. Am I crazy?

So my K1-mkII with HD 43mm ltd is the best thing that happened to my photography hobby. The camera performs well with all my lenses, but with the 43mm it feels like cheating. The pixy dust is so real. I want to take this combination everywhere.

I want a tiny sling bag that can hold my K1 with modest or small lens attached. It doesn't need to carry any extra lenses or other items. It also shouldn't shout "CAMERA BAG: please rob me." to much.

For example, if the HEX ranger mini would fit the above mentioned combination I would already be very happy. But I'm having a difficult time finding out if it does.

I'm still on the fence. Something in me really wants the Irix 11mm. I love photography. But I also have high functioning autism. Such beautiful and extreme engineering really does a trick on me. Those Irix lenses look like real gems. I'm not sure if I want one for what it can do, or for how pretty it is.

Oh well, I'm sure the 21mm ltd is going to be both pretty, built like a tank and have all the IQ we wish. Therefore I'll get the 20mm while I wait for the new ltd. Not a fair/good comparison, but still: How would you rank IQ FA20mm vs Irix?

Wow, thanks for all the replies.

What I liked in the DA 15 ltd was it's build, compactness and center IQ. So, I guess the upcoming DFA 21mm ltd should make a closest match. That could take a long time. I think I decided, and to pass the time, I'm probably going to order a used FA 20mm.

After I got my K-1 I sold most of my APS-C gear. I didn't want to, but I promised to do that for wife-aproval-purposes. :D

Ever since then I've been missing the DA 15mm limited. I knew I like that focal length, but didn't realize that I would miss it so much. Anyway, I'm now looking for a 20mm lens for my K-1. But now I don't know what to get...
  • I can get the Pentax SMC FA 20mm. It doesn't cost much, gets good reviews. And I can have it now.

  • I can wait for the 21mm limited. Which can still take a while until it hits the market. And I'm guessing that we will be lucky if its going to cost around 1250 USD.

  • And then there's the Pentax SMC FA* 24mm, not as wide, but gets better reviews then the 20mm.

  • Off brand options confuse me even more. I saw some extremely wide options from Irix. 11mm and 15mm. But the reviews are a bit strange. The blackstone and firefly have the same optical formula, but the reviews claim that the blackstone versions have better optical performance.

What would you guys do in my place?

K-1mkII missing focus only in LV

:o

Covering the OVF resolves all issues! I hadn't thought of that, because that wasn't necessary with my K-5. The viewfinder of the K-1 is much larger and brighter of course, and lets in much more light through the other direction too.

I'm so happy that my camera isn't broken. Embarrassed, but happy.

K-1mkII missing focus only in LV

Ok, this morning I did some more testing... Some suggested to use the select focus instead of spot focus and I wanted to quickly try that. At first I thought that that resolved the issues. Which is great of course! But when I returned to spot focus again I could no longer reproduce the error?! I cannot just let that go and forget about it without knowing what caused it.

Only after some more extensive testing, trying to reproduce the error, it came back. In both spot AF and select AF. I also noticed that the colors in photos taken with LV seem desaturated in comparison to photos taken through the OVF. It can also be seen in the test photos that I posted earlier in this thread.

This maybe a stupid theory of mine, but could it be caused by the sensor heating up? Or because it's used longer in live view mode? In live view the sensor is used to feed information to the screen constantly. But when using the OVF it is "resting" until the actual picture is taken.

I find this so strange, because in my K-5 I am so used to AF in live view being much more precise. There it would seem the other way round.

Another test with a different uninteresting subject. Outside this time. Tripod, 2 seconds timer, SR off, 1/2000s, F4.0, ISO100. Both focus types in spot focus. Left is OVF, right is liveview. It seems like it's focusing behind the center spot.

I don't know what EFCS is. If it's the electronic shutter option then I've already tried that which doesn't help. I just now tried setting it to 1/250s. Also no improvement over focusing via the OVF.

Yes, I did use the self timer on 2 seconds for the above pictures.

When increasing speed and iso it does not improve.

I used spot focus in both modes.

In this case I was using the new FA HD 43 limited. But the same difference occurs when using my DFA 28-105.

I have the latest firmware 1.20

Here's the same uninteresting picture on a tripod. Left is normal, right is via live view. Both with the same lens. F4, 1/4sec, ISO100.

This is a weird issue. Today I noticed that my K-1mkII is clearly missing focus in liveview only. When I take the same picture twice, once in normal mode and once in liveview, then the latter one is unsharp. And it seems to do in consistently too. It does it with all lenses.

What my be causing this? Anything I can do?

I hadn't considered the DA* 55 because I dismissed it on the assumption that it wouldn't fit the full frame image circle. So that's excellent news to me. There's probably a test thread somewhere, but I can't find it.

DFA 35mm limited

I've been using the K-1II for some time now. And I couldn't carry both systems, so I sold off all my APSC gear. There's one thing that I miss really bad! And that's the DA 35mm limited macro. I love the field of view, I love the corner to corner sharpness and I love the rendering. I don't care about the macro part though.

Which lens compares the most on FF?

I currently have the FA 50 1.4, the FA 100 2.8 macro and the D FA 28-105. Now I'm itching to buy the new HD 43 limited, but the surprisingly negative reviews of the SMC version on this forum have convinced me that it's not that much of an upgrade over the FA 50 1.4

I'm trying to get back into Pentax... And photography in general. And I've lost track of all the new developments.

If you guys were me and were trying to decide between the SMC DA* 16-50 and the HD DA 16-85, which one would you pick? And why? Obviously I intend to use this lens for general shooting. And to take it to places where the conditions are unsuitable for my precious limited lenses. I used to have a 18-135 that purpose, but I want something better now.

If I look at reviews and the scores at, for example, opticallimits, I get completely lost.

I've got a lot of very nice primes. But I'm very careful with them. I just want one WR zoom that's going to take all the punishment of rain, dust, snow, etc...

That's interesting, what aspect exactly makes you prefer these images? This is what I'm afraid of, selling my excellent copy of the 18-135 for something that's going to make me miss it.

No, this is actually very helpful. I had wrongfully dismissed the 16-85 from the start because of the slower and variable aperture. But now judging from user reviews its performance seems to be excellent.

I need to do some more homework...

Thanks. Yes, in the ideal world I'd have both lenses as well... But in the real world I promised my wife that I wouldn't expand my lens collection any further.

Which one has the better IQ? (In the wide to normal range, of course.)
