I think I am giving up, and am leaving Pentax, unless there is an effective solution

The K-3 Mk I was the same, if you focus and release the AF (back button) the focus point was not registered in the EXIF data Maker Notes for that particular shot. That used to puzzle me until I discovered that I needed to keep the button depressed until the shot was taken. The K-3 Mk I had a rudimentary implementation and would tell you where the focus point was but it only showed in the Maker Notes using the EXIF tool app.

Well, you have about three things you can do with the camera! 1. Get rid of it. 2. Keep it and do nothing and keep on hoping for it to heal by itself which ain't going to happen. 3. Send it back for replacement or repair before it is out of warranty. Your choice, I know what i would do. The camera obviously has some problems that are not normal for the K-3 Mk III

New firmware for K-1 and K-3 Mark III

The K-1 and K-1II probably don't have the computing power for those features. Otherwise they would probably have included those for the full frame cameras.

Did you ever try to clean the AF Module lens? That might have saved you some frustration.

I'm with @Eric1965. I had persistent problems with Autofocus being inconsistent with my K-3 Mk I, sometimes it would be close and other times way off and it got frustrating doing AF Fine Tune all the time. What I discovered was that I had trash on the AF Module lens that was causing the problems all along. What I did was buy some lint free Q-tips and used a drop of Isopropyl alcohol on one and carefully cleaned the lens. After initially doing the Q-Tip cleaning I try to consistently use a Rocket Blower to get the loose trash out of the mirror box and up until I retired the K-3 Mk I last year I have had no problems with AF.

You might want to use a Rocket Blower and blow out the mirror box by turning the camera lens mount down and thoroughly carefully blow out the mirror box. Then do some tests. If the Rocket Blower doesn't solve the problem then use the lint free Q-tips and isopropyl alcohol and carefully clean the AF module lens. Be very careful not to get alcohol on the sensor. If the cleaning doesn't work you probably have a defective camera and it needs returning for replacement or repair.

I never shoot with my glasses on and I need a right eye correction of -2.5 which is easily achievable with the K-3 Mk III viewfinder. Keeping the camera stable with my glasses up against the eyepiece is a total PITA for me, I really don't see how you do it.

No names - User modes

I can understand not wanting to do a camera reset, I really don't think the naming of the User modes are critical for anything but having the satisfaction of seeing the description there on the screen. Just curious, when the info button is pushed and box 3 is highlighted in the control panel what happens when the rear E-dial is rotated? Good Luck.

The Read Outs and the elements are essentially on the same plane so they should be both in focus. The elements of the framing and focus points are the thinnest parts of what you see in the viewfinder so having them in focus, the readouts will be in focus too.

The Diopter should be adjusted based on your eyesight not set to zero. You adjust the diopter based on the focus and framing elements in the viewfinder to achieve clearly in focus elements when looking through the viewfinder. The only time to set the diopter to zero is if you have 20/20 vision other wise it is best to do a personal adjustment.

With the camera on push the info button while the mode dial is set to U3 you should see a box on the control panel screen labelled BOX3 if not read Page 13 in the the manual regarding the control panel and also Page 106 on Control Panel Customization. and add the corresponding BOX number to each user mode.

Are the other two showing correctly? Is Tripod Timer saved in a user mode box?

I looked at your images and saw nothing pertaining to the selection RECALL USER MODE SETTING. Go to to the menu selection C1, Recall User Mode Setting and check to see if the boxes have been assigned there. If not then assign each box to the desired USER selection on the mode dial. There are, I think, 10 boxes but only 5 can be assigned at a time.

Do you have the Recall User Mode Settings set up correctly? You need to register the USER Modes there also. That is where you assign settings saved in the USER MODE boxes to the MODE DIAL. That seems to be the step you are missing. Unless they are assigned you will not see the USER MODE NAMES.

Still struggling with AF

There are a bunch more contrast edges in the water than the back of the duck the camera is obviously going to chose the water. Just curious, why are you using Live View in this situation? Are you shooting tripod mounted? You are giving the camera too many choices you need to limit the AF area.

Same here, as I would expect it to. Its obvious @scottike has something set incorrectly or the Box names would show once the User Mode dial is turned. I certainly don't think certain Mk III cameras can't show the User Mode names correctly. There is something that hasn't been done correctly. Possibly step 6 and 7 on Page 100 have not been executed properly.

Same as it should work but the assignment of everything has to be done in sequence. Then after its initially done the names of the boxes can be changed.

Have you assigned names to the User mode boxes? Check the manual Page 100 Saving frequently used settings discusses how to accomplish that. Its a bit fiddly but one you do it you should be able to see the User Modes pop up. You must save various functions and settings to each box first then assign the names for the boxes then assign them to the user modes.

K3 iii autofocus with screwdriver lenses?

I'm not interested in a flippy screen because the Mk III doesn't have one. I'm not interested in on sensor Eye AF because the Mk III doesn't do that through the viewfinder. What I am interested in is getting the best out of what I have which is a Pentax K-3 Mk III. Constantly complaining about what the camera doesn't have is counter productive. I knew well before the release of the Mk III that it didn't have a flippy screen or on sensor Eye AF and I think most buyers of the camera also knew the same things. I just enjoy and appreciate the whole experience of shooting with the K-3 Mk III.

K3 iii autofocus with screwdriver lenses?

Very informative video by Matt Kloskowski. Thanks, Michael, for posting it. Kloskowski pretty much shot down the need for the vaunted "Eye AF" and said he rarely uses it in bird photography. From watching the video, the K-3 Mk III Continuous AF Zone Select and Auto Modes react essentially the way the Sony Continuous modes do with small squares becoming active or inactive as the subject moves. I also noted that the Sony Continuous AF lost focus several time on the Osprey eating a fish in a tree and then regained focus similar to the way the Mk III reacts.

So in my opinion, the Mk III isn't far behind if any and the problem with the Mk III lies with Mk III users not quite knowing how to use the camera. Part of the problem can be placed squarely on the shoulders of Ricoh/ Pentax for not developing a comprehensive operators guide for the Mk III. Mk III owners are left floundering around testing different techniques, some getting great results and some mediocre, thus the differing opinions about the Mk III here on PF. The Mk III is the best Pentax photography tool for capturing BIF and other fast moving subjects but if we are not sure how to use the tool properly its a real shame. Its like trying to tighten a phillips screw with a straight blade screwdriver, you just can't quite get it tight.

Back Button Focus for Birds?

I've used the back button on my K-3 series cameras for so long that my thumb goes naturally to the back button. Its all a matter of motor muscle memory, do it long enough it becomes second nature. Using the shutter button for target acquisition and shutter release I would regularly inadvertently release the shutter too early.
