Well, technically it can (I recall a Nikon fisheye back in the days of forever ago), but it's a right hassle to lock the mirror up, attach the lens, and work only in LV :D

It depends. Sometimes modifications are much harder than starting from scratch, if there are pre-existing constraints that you have to respect.

Go figure, it's one of the reasons I actually shoot Pentax.

But yes, this whole spat is wholly off-topic.

To be clear, I'd prefer to have a quieter motor as well. But fixing the slow AF speed (at least entirely) is probably be out of the scope of the refresh.

Certainly possible! What I said earlier was that I doubted that anything outside Ring-Type SDM would be suitably fast. I wouldn't be surprised if DC was every bit as slow as the current screwdrive.

Then the DFA*85 could have used the DC motor instead of needing a ring-type SDM. It's a very simple matter of weight.

Again, the point is that the DFA 100 has to move the *entire* lens, half the barrel included, to focus.

If the optical formula is similar, the lens will focus by extension... Not sure anything other than a ring-type SDM (like the one in the DFA* 50 and 85) would have the torque to be suitably fast. For all its issues, screwdrive is actually a pretty powerful system.

Eh, I'd argue that the in-lens stabilizer of long lenses is best for photographing motion because it helps keep the finder (and therefore the AF points) right where you want them. It doesn't have a lot to do with lowering the acceptable shutter speed.

I've handled a 300mm Nikon with ILIS - it does feel less wobbly and is certainly more comfortable to use, but I wouldn't be able to say how much bearing -if any- the feature has on actual keeper rates.

I'm not sure keeping the lens at the same size would allow for internal focus, so the focus group will probably be more or less the entire lens .

No, I mean the only "on his free time" part might have been running whatever software to come up with a workable formula, just a proof of concept. Anything physical would most likely require approval for prototype expense (well, that's assuming that Pentax R&D doesn't have the capability to make a batch of glass elements in-house... AFAIK they buy all of it).
Personally, I think the most likely story is that a passionate engineer did some extra groundwork on the side, got management on board with a good idea for a cracking lens, and then it stopped being a "free time" project already pretty early on.

I specifically left academia because it was *expected* that your job would live rent-free in your head 24/7/365.

The joke in my group was that part-time (officially all PhDs were paid for 20 h/week) was 12 h/day and full time was 24 h/day.

Now that I do R&D at a startup, I do still keep work in the back of my head from time to time or when I'm talking with my friends in the field - it's not the first time I beeline for the pilot plant because I had an idea off the clock. But it's certainly more in my own terms.

---------- Post added 08-02-22 at 11:36 AM ----------

I carry out projects more or less alone (well, communicating with my manager and the odd sanity check, obviously) until the pilot plant testing is nailed down... afterwards, it's time to get Engineering and/or Operations involved. It's perfectly possible that this engineer "just" ran the calculations for the optical design, showed it to the bosses, there was permission for a prototype, a "huh, looks great", and that's kinda it. Some projects take a fairly short time to rollout once the basics are working well.

It's probably only for as long as they have glass elements. Once they run out, I expect they'll replace the DA 50/1.8 with a near-identical DFA 50/1.8 (or f/1.7 for historical purposes ).

It's not really clever to have your only standard prime be a 1k chunk of glass, IMO.

It's more about "is it possible to reduce fringing, while keeping the rendering, small size and weight?" If they can, well, go ahead.

Eh? 90-100mm is about the sweet spot for portable macro lenses; shorter focal length gets you very close to the subject at 1:1 magnification, and while longer FL obviously gives you more working distance, it also means the lens will inevitably be larger. It's also a fantastic length for portraits, and there are many older macros in this range where excellent macro sharpness meets delicious rendering (Two very well-known 90mm f/2.5 examples are the Tamron model 52B and Tokina AT-X, a.k.a. "Bokina". There's also the Voigtlander 90mm and 125mm SL lenses, or... you know, the very much loved Pentax DFA 100mm f/2.8 Macro WR ;)).

Honestly, I might be interested, depending on the rendering. The current one I don't really like enough to warrant substituting my Tamron, and it's gonna be competing with the DFA21 for funding, but who knows...

I figure it's a combination of R&D not taking super long, giving a bit of freedom to the engineers to work on passion projects on the side, and the DFA 100 being a well-loved lens that sold pretty decently.

ISO over 6400 is another subscription.
You also get only the first 6 fps free with the Ka-ching3iii. Shooting at 9 fps costs you $0.01 per frame, shooting at 12 fps is a $0.03 cost per frame.

It used to be the case, but for Tamron, Samyang and Sigma it has been MILC-only designs for the last three or so years. Tamron in particular is IMO a better option than Sony for an e-mount camera, these days

Irix and Venus do make SLR lenses, but that's kind of it.

*Raises hand. I did, too. If you aren't sure about how committed you will be, 200 stings far less than 1000. I, in fact, always recommend a second-hand older flagship when people ask... though many have quite a bit of apprehension regarding used stuff. My German friends are the ones who are happiest with it, the Spanish ones... not so much.
