Nikon D200 as starter camera?

Well I got my Nikon D200 in the mail the other day. I paid $200 for it. The seller said it had a 24k shutter count but it turned out to be 64k--seller gave me a partial refund of $65 (which was very generous); so I got this once $1695 camera for $135 :) Plus $20 shipping.

Bought an AF-S 35mm 1.8 lens from Best Buy that evening and took some portraits of my nieces.

I did notice this. I had the color set to normal and there wasn't enough saturation in iPhoto--I had to add some in. I will try the "vivid" color preset on the D200 for next time.

Here is a slightly cropped portrait I took with this camera & lens. I did no processing except for adding a tiny amount of saturation.

I also picked up a $109 AF-D 50mm 1.8 from B&H, which I can't wait to try out :)

Pentax 35mm and 50mm autofocus primes recommendations please

If you could only have one 50mm autofocus lens and one 35mm AF lens (both for Pentax), each under $500, which two would you choose? (similar lens sizes will be ok as well.. like the 40mm pancake for example.)

I already have a K-X, and I don't think I am going to get rid of it. I'll use it for my pentax glass and m42's. But I want to be able to use Nikon glass as well so I need a Nikon body. D7000 have back focusing issues so I don't know of another affordable Nikon camera to get that takes AF-D lenses and AI and AI-S etc..

Nikon D200 as starter camera?

I have been thinking about trying out Nikon because of the affordable & high quality lenses: Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 DX, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AF-D and the Tamron 70-300 VC USD.

[I am really disgusted with Ricoh and their Pentax 50mm f/1.8 DA solution having a plastic mount--let alone no quick shift--at a ridicuously high price of $200... Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AF-D is metal mount screw drive for only $120. For $200 you can get a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 with metal mount AND quick shift.]

I was about to order a Nikon D7000 because they are $699 now, NEW at B&H but I've been reading tons of complaints about this camera's back focusing issue. So I decided I don't want it.

I think I now want to wait a few years until the D610 comes down in price (under $800) then get it, but for now I need a DSLR body I can grow a Nikon lens collection with, and I've been thinking about the D200 because it's so affordable used (under $250).

It's a quality made camera from what I hear and takes all the Nikon Lenses AI, AI-S, AF-D, AF-S, etc..

What do you think? Should I go for it? I don't need video recording and I can deal with less megapixels and lesser image quality than my k-x.

Sigma 18-250 vs. DA 55-300?

Hrm, I see the 55-300 is a faster lens. I'm not sure what the cut off is on the Sigma 18-250 at f5.8.

How does the image quality of the sigma 18-250 at 55-250 compare to the DA at 55-250?

I am looking for the best zoom lens under $500 for my pentax k-x. If the Sigma is as good then I might as well get it because it covers the low end range as well. Would be nice if I could just have one lens that looks good throughout. I am not really impressed with the plastic mount of my 18-55.

Lens Micro Focus Adjustment on K-X?

So I guess it would be prudent to memorize the settings for each lens and manually change that global setting each swap? Is that why some of my lenses seem soft? I bet it is.

Is there a way to micro adjust the focus on each lens I use on the K-X? (for both manual and autofocus lenses).

Picked up this Bogen (Manfrotto) 3021 Tripod w/ Bogen 3025 head today at the flea market for $12

Seems to be in good working order (lubed it up) except for the following leg clamp:

Any idea where I could get a replacement clamp for this tripod?

I think $199 would be more fair -- I mean it has a plastic mount for goodness sake. For $199 you get quick shift focus and metal mount on the Nikon lens. I don't even know if this lens has quick shift.

I see the DA 50mm 1.8 has finally made it to the market--I've been checking often--and I am quite disappointed with the pricing compared to a similar lens Nikon offers for it's DSLR cameras.

I actually got some decent negative scans from 35mm on my old Canoscan scanner -- bought it back in 2006. I forget the model number. Certainly good enough for 4x6 prints.

I need a new wireless scanner for my home network. Since I need a new one, I'd like to get the best one for scanning film negatives as well as full page documents. I'd like a flatbed scanner with attachments to scan negatives I guess.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated -- thanks!

Oh, additionally it needs to be able to work with both Mac OS X Lion & Windows 7.

To rebuild my 44k-4 he charged $55.

$13 shipping for 3 lenses and one asahi k2 body.

I had him service my K 35/3.5 and M 50/1.4 and after he tuned them up they are so much sharper! I guess they needed calibration. I'll be keeping these gems! If you have an old K or M lens and it doesn't seem to quite live up to what everyone else is saying about them, I suggest you send them to Eric for tuning. I notice great improvements.

I also had him fix a 44K-4 .. it might of been his first he serviced I am not sure but he regreased it and managed to keep all the aperture ball bearings together :) It is a very tight focus though-- I guess this is normal for this lens? Is there an adjustment to make it focus a little easier? It's nice and smooth now (was very dried out before and messed up) but it's just a bit tight.

m42 lenses ideal for video

Just tried it outdoors! it works great! Same lighting at f2 vs f16.. the camera adjusts the lighting--and the depth of field increases dramatically :)

I just also tried it with my 18-55 DAL.. Although there is an aperture adjustment when in video mode it seems to be locked on a fixed non adjustable aperture setting--unlike my manual helios 44-2!

It seems useful to be able to film at f16 outdoors since the pentax cameras do not have video autofocus.

I just used my Helios 44-2 on my K-X in video mode. You just adjust the aperture to f16 then open/close up the aperture to your liking with the secondary stop down aperture adjustor. You can see the depth of field and lighting change on the fly. Like when it's wide open it's really bright... i close it up to f4 then it gets darker then the camera compensates for it and adjusts the light up (I guess with dynamic ISO or whatever). When you get to a certain point it just gets too dark and the camera can't compensate for it being that closed up--This is indoors with ambient lighting.

I am going to go try it outdoors now with it closed all the way to f16.

--does this make sense?

Doesn't the K-X and K-5 have fixed aperture for video? i.e. wide open on K mount lenses? With the M42 lens I can at least close it up a bit to allow for more depth of field so the person I am videoing has a little room to move around.

I wish I could stay in the k-5 club but the used k-5 i got from Amazon is taking blurry pictures! With the same exact setup my K-X is taking much sharper images.

Unfortunately I am gonna have to send this pretty k-5 back to Amazon.

I don't know if it is a SR or mirror slap problem or whatever.. i was taking pics at 1/160th shutter speed an like f5 with very careful manual focusing on pentax-m lens.

Key advantages of K-5 over K-X

Well I am gonna send the K-5 back to amazon. There must be somethign wrong with it. The pictures are all blurry. I spent an hour in a off camera flash photography setup trying to get good portraits from it and couldn't. Then I popped hte lens and flash trigger on my K-X--with the same iso , aperture, shutter speed--and took good pictures within minutes. So it's really sad I got a bumb K-5 and couldnt' stay in the K-5 club. I doubt I'll try to switch again. The K-X just works for me.

EDIT: actually the ISO was 100 on the K-5 and 200 on the K-x.. i just simply halved the 2 manual flash light settings.
