So I just tried updating my W7 PC using the Mediacreation tool .exe. Everything was progressing nicely until I received this pop-up :

0xC1900101-0x4000D
"Install failed in SECOND BOOT phase with error during MIGRATE DATA operation.

My PC was then automatically restored to its original settings prior to my attempt. I did check beforehand to make certain my PC fulfilled all basic requirements for W10. Now, I have minimal computer skills and have no clue what this all means. Should I try it again ? Is it a lost cause ?

Thanks for the help.

Thank you for all the help , suggestions, and smiles from the comments. I re-cleaned the lens again and this time used only a very small amount of the "Super Lube" grease. Seems I used too much grease the first try and that was causing a problem on the finer threads of the helicoid. When I watched the You Tube video the author applied a pretty good coating of a dark green grease and I believed that to be the norm, not thinking about the viscosity of different products. I think I will order some Helimax XP for the next lens, but for now my Jupiter 9 is nice and smooth.

Again, I appreciate everyone's help.

Today I disassembled and cleaned the focusing helicoid on my Jupiter 9 rangefinder lens following a You Tube video. The lens had been extremely difficult to rotate for focus. I removed all the old grease using lighter fluid and cleaned all thread surfaces with alcohol. They came out perfectly clean and I didn't see any damage to the threads. I relubed the helical using "SuperLube", a synthetic grease (PTFE). Reassembly went fine and infinity was maintained.

While the lens is now able to focus freely, it is still a bit stiff doing so. I had been hoping for a nice smooth and buttery focus. The Jupiter 9 was made in 1969. Is this result all I can expect ? Is there something else I should have done or can do ? I don't mind giving it another try. It's a nice cold weather project.

Thanks for any help.

Fred, these are amazing. I've followed the development of your "snowcatcher" for years and I believe this version is the ultimate. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and the inspiration to get me outdoors in the winter. I'm still using an older version of your set-up, finding success and having fun.

I agree with three of your facts. "I don't think Pentax is bad" , "other systems have many more options" , and "autofocus is a big concern". So we do share some similar concerns. But I'm too old and have too much invested in my Pentax gear to dump it. Plus, I also use a m4/3 system now as much as my Pentax.
Get into a system you'll enjoy and feel more comfortable and satisfied with. Good luck.

My go to Olympus site is Mu-43.com - Micro Four Thirds User Group. It's for micro 4/3 enthusiasts, so you'll also find info on Panasonic gear as well. I enjoy it very much. Give it a try.

Binoculars - good for birding ?

Ricoh has these binoculars on their "12 Days of Holiday Deals". Model is Pentax DCF SW 10x25. Would these be OK for casual birding ? I wear eyeglasses, would these be OK for that accommodation ? I use a pair of Redfield Rebel 8x42 binocs now, but they're kind of big & heavy to carry along with my photo gear.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

I recommend "Old Car City" located in White, Georgia which is about a 1 hour car ride north of Atlanta. I visited last year for a day and wish I had more time. The place is huge and filled with thousands of old derelict cars. A photographers dream if you're into that sort of thing. Walk across the street to the little diner for lunch, another treat. Check out OCC online to see some pics.
I stayed in Atlanta as my "base" and visited the CNN facility, World of Coca Cola, Jimmy Carter Presidential Museum ... lots of great bars and restaurants as well.

I'm no expert, but it looks like an old GE Coolidge tube. The glass tube is placed in a metal housing that is then filled with oil to help dissipate heat. In the old days before recycling, the broken tubes were just thrown out. I was lucky to get one from a service tech decades ago and still have it as a display piece.
