Heya folks!

I got some good feedback from the last thread, so I thought I'd share some more of my latest works. Yes, more cars!

As always, Comments and Critique are ALWAYS welcome (good or bad)!

1)Rig shot, double because it was a collaboration between my friend (also a photographer) and I, from building the rig used, to framing the actual shot. It's fun to have a partner to bounce ideas off of!

2) An HDR using 4 exposures, 3 for the car/rocks 1 for the sky.

3) Not an HDR but 2 exposures fused in CS4 (subject + sky)

4) Not sure if I like this one, I was trying out a new type of shot that I've seen others do. 3 exposures fused in CS4: 1 for the sky, 1 for the car (hood down), 1 for the car (hood up). Let me know what you think!

Thanks for looking folks! :D

Indeed, I have the FA5 version (4 door Si) and the K20Z3 is a fantastic motor.

Glad you like them and took inspiration from them! Let's see what you come up with, please link to your thread here so I can find it! :D

MMmmm...white NSX would be fantastic!

I'll look into the 12-24, I have a friend that uses the Sigma 10-20 and his shots are amazing...but if the extra 2mm from 10 to 12 isn't a big deal, the 12-24 might be worth a try.

So you don't think a CPL would help in these photos? (obviously in the future) This is the first black car I've attempted and although he LOVES the mirror reflections...I hate them lol

Maybe in the future an evening shoot, with a couple off camera strobes. I'll have to play a bit.

Wow, thank you! I did the aged photos for my personal use, he didn't ask for them but I like to get creative with the PP some times lol

Edit: Oh and I just finished the parts poster for him. Here's the scaled down version...kinda helps with the empty space in the photo.

Indeed, his car looks mean with the rpf1's, not to mention it's supercharged pushing ~350 whp in a 2800lb vehicle

Shot #2 was meant to be used in a poster type setting where sponsor/parts brand logos would be photoshopped into the photo around the car, then framed and set next to the car during a car show. But indeed, without knowing that, it's rather empty lol

Nope, I haven't purchased the Sigma 10-20mm yet, so all these shots were taken with the 18-55 kit lens and the Sigma 105 f/2.8 macro EX DG.

Shooting black/dark cars is rough, that's why I picked this location. Plain gray walls, neutral concrete with no lines, in an attempt to minimize the reflections since I don't have a CP filter yet :( Unfortunately it was overcast during the shoot so things had to be fixed in PP to bring out the contrast and make them pop a bit more.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Specifically import cars, then this thread is for you!

It's been a while since I've posted anything for C&C so here are some shots from today, yes it's more than the normal 4-5, but I think you'll enjoy them. The owner of the car was very pleased and asked for the hi-res versions. Someday I'll get paid to do this stuff :D

And for creativity fun times...

Thanks for looking, C&C is always welcome, good or bad.

I'd like to improve and I DO know I need a CP filter...but what do you think of the shots sans the filter?

I'm currently using the Tamrac 6 bag. It's fantastic and very roomy.

Tamrac - Model 5606 System 6

Holds my K-x, 18-55, Sigma 105mm macro, Soligor 80-200mm, M50 f/2 and 3 extra sets of batteries, caps/hoods, and the rest of the small stuff. Plenty of room left over as my collection grows too.

Ahh, I see your point. While I agree that her (and most children's) skin is flawless naturally, I wasn't going for a "glamor" look, more of an "angelic" look. Soft, a bit under saturated, almost glowing skin like that of a cherub. Though, I think I did over do it lol

Worthy of a learning experience at the least :D

This is a bit confusing to me.

Indeed, it's a bit overdone and not necessary on a child (though this is my only model at the moment, and she works for string cheese!).

So what about the head shot could I have done better? I get the posing comment, I suck at instructing her how to pose. It's a tight frame, so maybe pull back a bit and get shoulders? Perspective...it's fairly straight on, so you'd like a more "heroic" perspective? Or looking down a bit? Composition...I'm lost on this one, it's just her head. How could I have improved the composition? If you think maybe a different background, say grey color, would work better against her light hair/skin I agree, but I honestly don't know how else to "compose" a headshot/portrait. Please explain! I love to learn!

Interesting opinions, valuable indeed!

I'm surprised you noticed the eyelashes Jezeks, most on other boards haven't. Good catch!

So, if I'm reading it right, on children, tone down the skin smoothing so you CAN see the natural texture, some eye enhancements but not eyelashes.

Though on adults, this type of PP would be more appropriate? Right?

Hey all, I'm learning the fine art of portrait re-touching. Need some opinions on which you like better, and why?

or

2)

If you'd like to know what I did, I'd be happy to share, but I'd like opinions on which version you enjoy most. Or if both are overdone.

Thanks for viewing! :D

Indeed, it would disable SR. However, I think I still would buy one. If for nothing else than to use in great light situations where fast shutter speeds could potentially cover for camera shake to some degree.

It wouldn't be ideal, but it'd be a step in the right direction.

Hey Pete, read your post over there and it's quite good!

You have more guts than I do (having never worked on a camera before) so the belt sander made me cringe, but I like that you achieved the same result, quite easily!

Having more options to make our Pentax cameras even better, is always good!

Portrait lighting on a budget

I'm right there with you on wanting strobist equipment on a budget (I'm unemployed lol), so I've been doing some research. Here's what I came up with:

Flash(es):
Vivitar 285HV $89.95 each (I want 2) fully manual flash, no P-TTL, no fancy stuff, just light on demand.

Remote trigger(s):
eBay radio triggers Cheap and not as reliable as Pocket Wizards brand, but a HELLUVA lot cheaper and good enough to learn the art of lighting.

Stand(s) & Bracket(s):
This kit if/when it's in stock

or by the piece with a bit more quality in the stand...

Manfrotto stand
Umbrella Bracket
45 inch Shoot-through/reflector Umbrella

And that's it, I think lol. All for a bit over $300 for 2 strobes.

Also check out www.strobist.com It's a FANTASTIC resource for learning to light with flash(es). Lots of how-to's, assignments, etc. It's like a free on-line class. I'm in NO way affiliated with the site, I just started reading it a few days ago and can't stop, it's chock full of information for free.

Hope this helps you, it helped me!

Along these same lines, when I'm using my OOOOLD Soligor 80-200 I put in 200 on startup. In my logic, at the 200 end the hand shake is more severe in the photo than at the 80 end.

Might be an over compensation for anything closer than say 180mm...but I don't use the lens unless I need the reach, so it's never an issue.

Ah yes, forgot to mention I added the O-ME53 eyepiece too. You're right, it's such a nice addition to the screens. A wee bit of vignetting, but it's not a huge deal to me when I now know my MF lenses can be used more accurately.

Ya, there's an Ultimate Electronics here in Littleton...they have a K-x & K-7, a kit lens and a 50-200 DA. That's it. But hey, it's more than Wolf Camera & Best Buy! lol
