Newborn & Family photography with a K-5?

Hi guys,

Not new here but haven't been around much lately so apologies if I sound rusty.

A part of my dream is to become a newborn & family photographer, but using a portable studio, so that I can go to customer's home in their comfort zone. I am partial to high-key photos, especially newborns.
I have my trusty K-5, a Sekonic lightmeter, silver & gold reflectors and a 70-200/2.8 Tamron for this, plus am planning to buy one 400ws strobe light, a huge octabox, background paper and stands.

What else can you think of that I may need that covers for a portable studio?
Thanking you.

That, Class A, for whatever reason, worked! :) Thumbs Up to you Class A, and to all the previous gladiators who were in the ring with me. So you know, I mounted it on a Kx, flash on manual, Kx on manual, went into the flash settings to make sure flash is selected, took the shot and the flash fired! Switched off Kx, but not the flash, mounted on a V5 (Rx), triggered it with the other V5(Tx).
Thanks for that brilliant suggestion Class A.

Class A, does Grant and Polly still host the morning 7am radio show? I have lived in Wellington for 10 years many many years ago, was on Dixon st and then on Brooklyn rd(near Central Park). Loved Wellington, everything good about it.

Hi Class A,
Nope it doesn't work. I see the tx communicating with the rx perfectly as both turn green promptly, but they are not able to trigger the flash. I checked that the flash works by pressing the Pilot button. Checked carefully both V5's on the same channel, in fact, changed channel for both just in case, also checked the rx is where the flash is sitting, and tx is the trigger. I also put the flash in all the four modes it has (M, S1, S2, Multi) and tried to trigger with the V5 each time, but nothing. Its just beyond me why the flash doesn't work.
You mentioned optical triggering. I dont see that anywhere either on the flash or the V5's.
Also, all this testing was done without the camera coming into play, so you know.

As you mentioned investment into Cactus products, I am thinking why would you not invest in Godox/Yongnuo products as their flashes also support HSS and TTL and would be about one-third to half the price of the flash you mentioned from Cactus. After all, I suppose Cactus is also from China just as the other two, so is the Cactus flash more feature-rich compared to the best Godox/Yongnuo flashes currently on offer? or is it due to better the triggering systems that you prefer Cactus over the other two? And then there is Neewer knocking on the door also from China. 5 years and a lot of western photo equipment companies are gonna shut down unless they would know how to tackle the China challenge and win.

Thanks for the input Mcgregni. I have read(and learnt) quite a bit of using flash, especially the HSS animal from your posts on Pentax users, and had the good fortune to see well-lit photos of your beautiful little models. Good to know this flash business confuses/is unclear to even experts like you so that we upstarts can blame it on the uncertainity when we(I mean, I) make mistakes.
Yes the forementioned triggers are something I am very keen to get my hands on.

Thanks Heaps Brooke.
That's a lot of stuff to wrap my head around, but I love every bit of what you have suggested, its like candy. I think we photographers are suckers for such peripheral equipment because we love everything to do with photography.
Once again, love your pictures including the girl portrait from your last post.

Hey thanks heaps Morenjavi,

That's a lot of useful info you have posted. Will take a while for me to understand and digest it. The Godox setup has started to take off. The Chinese know what they are doing. Will get back if I need to know something from your info. Thanks again.

Congratulations on making such lovely pictures Brooke.
I will look into buying the kind of setup you use as knowing all the control one can have while at low prices is a win-win situation.
Here in Sweden its pretty steep to buy photo equipment. It seems the Alien Bees are popular in the USA. I'll be travelling to Seattle in September and would look into buying things to bring back to Sweden. Anything you would suggest is really worth buying in the US(like those Cowboy triggers you suggested look more and more promising as I read about them on Amazon, thanking you for that) if I am starting out in portrait and wedding photography? Light modifiers, triggers, speedlights? Doesn't matter if it isn't Pentax-based, as I also own a Nikon D750.

Thanks for the info Brooke.
Those PT-04's are tempting given the amazing low price of them. Being here in Sweden, Amazon says its gonna cost 15USD in import and postage charges. And it still seem to be worth it if they can do what my V5's cannot(unless, of course, I'm doing something wrong in my settings)

Yes I am starting to think on starting a new thread. Will buy a new flash anyway. Thanks once again C_Jones, you are an amazing helpful person.

I never tried the YN560II-on a V5-on the K-5 scenario, because I know that will work. But I want the flash to fire off-camera using the V5's and that's not happening to me. Here I really hope the simple problem is that I do not have one more flash. Then I know why. But on the other hand, if the V5's should be working to fire my one flash off-camera, then I am doing something wrong.
I don't understand this forum. No one else except you C_Jones has pitched in their suggestions knowing the V5's and the Yonguos have been a pretty popular topic on Pentax forums for many years.

As you have mentioned earlier, it will take two flashes to solve what I am looking for because there needs to be a light signal from the camera going to the slave flash, hence it doesn't fire.
I would have so much wanted to just click on the camera shutter button, which would in turn command the V5(Tx) on my camera to send a signal to the V5(Rx) under the slave flash to fire that flash.

I think you solved it for me C_Jones.
Because I am using just one flash, and wanting to use it wirelessly detached mounted on a V5, while all this while I have been trying to trigger it with a V5 mounted on my camera but no flash was mounted on the V5 on my camera. And that's why the flash never got the signal from another flash. Well it seems I'll need to buy one more flash than.
But a Big Thanks to you C_Jones for leading me through this thought process. Highly appreciated.

As far as I know there isn't a Yongnuo Radio Trigger mode on the YN560II, unless you mean the Multi mode. But anyway, as mentioned earlier, I do have tried all kinds of combinations to fire the flash with the V5 acting as Tx & Rx, and pressing the camera shutter release, but the flash doesn't fire, unless as you mention I mentioned, the built-in camera flash stands vertical as the master, then the YN560II fires in all its glory in any mode you may fancy. But in that scenario, when will the V5's come into play?

---------- Post added 07-22-17 at 08:07 PM ----------

We both agree there is compatibility between all three players i.e. K-5, V5's and YN560II. There must be something I must be doing/not doing that I am not able to figure out.
Tell me one thing, you set up the AF360FGZ's onto the V5's being in Rx mode, one of the V5 is mounted on the camera hotshoe acting as the Tx(no flash is mounted on top of that V5 Tx), and then you press the camera shutter button and the flash/s fire? Is that how you do it?

Yes have tried the X mode of K-5, though I always shoot in M, but this was out of frustration that I tried the X mode.
And also tried all the four modes modes on the flash just hoping some mode would raise its hand and say 'There! It works now', but no luck!

Can it be that its because its a Pentax camera? I was going through a small booklet that Cactus provides with various diagrams of camera, flash, modifier setups used by people and taken lovely photos using the V4/5's. All the photos and diagrams had cameras for Nikon, Canon, Sony etc, but not a Pentax! One diagram also had a Yongnuo used with a Nikon setup.

---------- Post added 07-22-17 at 06:36 PM ----------

Just posting an update here.
I connected one of the two cords that you get with the V5's to the YN560II, put the V5 on RX. Then put the other V5 on the K-5 hotshoe as a TX, checked the channels to be the same, and pressed the camera button, The flash did not work!
Then I pressed the testing button on the V5 which sat on the camera, and it triggered the flash. But no photo because the camera was not triggered. So in that way the V5's and the YN560II works together, but not wirelessly.

Check to each and every one of the points that you mentioned to make sure, but the YN560II does not fire with the V5! I tried 20,000 more permutations and combinations besides yours to somehow get the V5 to fire the YN560II, but it doesn't.
I have established that my V5's and YN560II are working independent of each other, but not together. Can it be that there is something built inside the YN560II which doesn't allow the V5 to work with it, so that perhaps I would need to buy a compatible trigger from Yongnuo? More sales for them?
(I know both companies have come out with newer things and I am holding on to dinosaurs, but if it works, than why not)
It would be very interesting and helpful if someone having a YN560II and V5's could make them work together or had made them work in the past, could add to this.

Thanks for all the help C_Jones.

Some observations:

1. The flash didn't ever fire when I had a manual-focus lens on. In fact, the 'wireless flash' icon was greyed out in the K-5 menu. Then I put on a auto-focus lens and the 'wireless flash' icon came to life. I selected it.
2. The V5's never worked with or without the auto-focus lens. It may be that they don't support the YN560II for whatever reason.
3. The flash fired when my built-in flash was on(stood up from its lying position), when my wireless flash in the menu was on, in fact, now the flash fired in all modes i.e. M, S1, S2 and Multi.

Questions:
1. Is there any way to make the YN560II work in slave mode with a manual lens, for.e.g. a Tak 1.4?
2. Why the hell wouldn't the V5's not work? They did give out a green light when I pressed their testing button, which means they did communicate with each other, but the flash never fired, even with the auto-focus lens on!

Thanks C_Jones.
As you mentioned, the first scenerio needs one more flash. We hence talk about the second scenerio where the built-in flash fires the YN560ii. I am not able to do that.
On the YN560II I will put it to S1, as you mentioned(had done that before I wrote this post, but didn't work, with and without the V5's).
My settings in the K-5 is where I need to make changes to to get the built-in flash to fire the slave YN560II.
What settings would you use in the camera?

Hi guys,
I am trying to get into using flash for the first time. Have read a lot online, the above flash-camera combination works with the flash in the camera's hotshoe, but I wanna use the flash detached from the camera and don't know what settings would work. Tried many possible combinations but nothing.

I also have four Cactus v5 triggers and would love to know, in addition to the above setup, how to bring them into the mix and make the flash work as a slave.

Thanks.

I am aware of that setting and have set it on the second setting(pressing once with the remote starts the exposure and pressing again ends it), but that's for the bulb mode. My exposure is not over 30 secs, hence I am using the M mode all this time. I have also, just to try it out, gone into the bulb mode for the same 15 sec exposure, just to see what I get, but its the exact same result of a black photo with blinking under-exposure intimation.

Is there anywhere on Pentax forums where someone has written a long-exposure write-up so that I can match my actions step-by-step? That can be a way to find out what's happening with my camera or where I am doing something different.

I understand your point and that's how it should be but it seems that I dont get to press the third time because when I press the remote the second time the photo gets finalized because I can see the ugly result on the back panel. At this point, if I press the remote once again, it starts again with the mirror opening sound and the beeping commencing! That makes me wonder why am I not able to get a third press of the remote? What must be wrong here? Can the mirror and the shutter open on the same remote first-time press?

Here is the thing Photoptimist, when I press the remote the first time, the mirror goes up and it beeps every second, then when the remote is pressed again(after 15 secs), according to you the exposure should start now, but then instead, I see that the photo is done because I see the final result along with the blinking on the screen(blinking due to the heavily underexposed exposure courtsey of the big stopper)
The bulb mode doesn't come into play here as the exposure was for 15 seconds and bulb mode is for over 30 seconds.

It would be great to have someone write the exact procedure for any Pentax with a lee big stopper. One can easily go to the Lee website and learn, but they are with other camera makes, and I haven't seen the Pentax - Lee big stopper combination anywhere on the web.
Photooptimist - Thanks for your message. The remote is working fine, but even if I wont have a remote, it should work I guess.
Here is my procedure - After focusing and composing, I put on the Lee filter and then click on the remote once. The camera is set on the MUP mode. The mirror opens, a beep sounds every second denoting that the photo is being made, then when the time is up, I press the remote again, the mirror falls back and the photo is complete. The photo then appears shortly but in my case, totally black!
Perhaps my process is flawed somewhere. That's why it would be awesome, not just for this thread, if someone writes a short summary of exactly how to take a photo with the K-5(or any other Pentax should do) and Lee big stopper.

Hi Guys,

Its been a while since I have been away from using my K-5 in combination with the popular Lee Big Stopper(10 stops) filter. So now when I put my camera on a solid tripod, click on the MUP with my remote for the required calculated amount of seconds as per the Lee time chart, it seems like its on its way to take a picture, but the results are always total black! That never happened before a long time(2 years) ago when I was good at it. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help.
