Fast aperture lenses are mainly about shallow depth o field. Low-light is rather secondary effect.
Flash is about light CONTROL even on sunny day. Using either as low-light only option how to gather some light is just emergency with usualy weak image output. And you can add IBIS too... I have many photos taken with K20D using shutters like 1/10s just because no other option was available and FA*24/2, FA35/2 or FA50/1.4 were my limits :)

ISO above 1600 is rapidly loosing details and dynamic range, while noise increases quickly. No matter if we are talking about K1, K3 or 645Z. Yes ISO6400 images can be usable if you only need some pic for facebook/instagram/web presentation.. but not for serious work. DNR processors are better and better, but everything has its limits. Even best algorithm cannot create data out of nothing. That is painting then, not photography :D

K1 is different system which NEEDS different lenses than already existing APS-C to work well. And these lenses are simply not there yet and they are not going to be there anytime soon as we can see current tempo. (Compare that "growth" to any other system).

There is no chance, that advanced APS-C camera will affect the K1. It only can help brand to stay on market and keep those, who are leaving. Not to mention, that K1 sales are laughable compared to ANY other FF camera on the market. It is more like cheap 645Z cousin for few guys who think, that they somehow "need" FF sensor size to make better pictures.

They need to produce:
645Z replacement
K1II replacement comparable to Z7, A7III, A99II (or kill it like Q and wait for lenses)
K3 replacement comparable to D500/7DII level
K70 replacement
+ Maybe something really low-end to attract newbies like Km/Kx/Kr were.

APS-C lenses overhaul, especially those DA*, that are more than decade old.

KP has little place here.
And yes there are guys who bought that and now they are trying to defent it till last breath.. But would you buy that KP if K3 replacement would have existed? I have serious doubts. It only is desperate move how to get something with slightly better IQ and AF, than 6 years old obsolete K3 technology (or the same camera branded as K3II).
It is not advanced camera and also not cheap camera. It was even more expensive than K3II when it was introduced. Just something in the middle, loosing both advantages.

As K50 ended they lack some cheap low-end camera... Kz seems to me like Km, Kx, Kr line successor.. some cheap K70 chopper, KP as K70 replacement and then something hi-end.
Not a bad idea.. but lets see.

Or maybe KS line sucessor.. KZI, KZII etc..

Still nothing new, no new rumor, no new leak.. just bunch of kids talking about strange pentax nomenclature.

So it seems that new camera is nowhere near any advanced development stage and that we are going to see nothing new on Photokina.

Sad.

Build-in flash: Guys, get out of the box! You don't have to select between having flash OR GPS. That is d..mb. Camera easily can accomodate both. If designer is forced to.

Photokina: I'm afraid that they are only going to show K1II with DFA50/1.4 and nothing else. There is not even single tiny hint about any new camera.

615Z successor will be better suited for 100th year anniversary in 2019..

Maybe K70 update.. and maybe KP update around christmas..

APS-C hi-end is probably "being developed" as they told us half year ago that they started. Engineering department probably got erased heavily to save cost.... and to commit proper suicide on the market.

It is not rated shutter life meaning that shutter will die after 100k. That means, that for up to 100k actuations that shutter has to hold exact timing for exposition under test conditions (clean). If you have lot of dust in the mechanics it can easily die after 20k and if your camera is clean internally and your mechanic parts are well lubed, it can easily do 500k+. It only might degrade in terms of accuracy.. lets say after 300k the 1/8000s might be 1/6000s in real. Most people shooting in raw won't even notice the difference.. they add some EV in lightroom.

By the way same applies for that sensor too.. it degrades slightly over time. Slightly. You may notice some K10Ds, K20Ds and other old cameras to underexposure a bit more over time.. slightly.

There is no need to remove one to keep the other. The only reason why K3II does not have flash is, that they simply reused the whole body and added horrible plastic dome at the top. That was design disaster driven ONLY BY COST SAVING MEASURES and nobody should try to explain how there is no place for GPS in camera body such huge as K7/K5/K3 line, while it can be perfectly fitted into tiny wristwatch. It easily can be placed under top LCD status display with zero impact on accuracy or usability.

K1 is 2010-2011 project, basically prototype that went to market and then was replaced by finished model called K1II.

Dan Rentea:

Considering your previous post: try to take picture of yourself in the bathroom with light switched off while having only camera body and lens. Then you'll quickly understand what is the difference between having some picture and having zero picture. Talking tales about ambient light is completely out of the scope and you missed the point obviously. And please don't try to "explain" to me how flash photography works or how to balance available light with flash. I know well what build in tiny unit is capable of and what one or more hot-shoe mounted flashes + external flashes can do.
If you work with softboxes then you can pack Cactus V6II triggers (that even enable you to use HSS) and do not bother with easily portable wireless flash commander. But the truth is, that for example AF540FGZ can reliably fire when triggered by commander IF YOU TURN THE LIGHT SENSOR TOWARDS THE CAMERA WITH COMMANDER. Logically if you just place the flash somewhere and lit its backside, it won't fire.
(+ there also is difference between slave1 and slave2, because of pre-flash intensity + duration and communication method. Long story shor: AF540FGZ switched to slave 2 with sensor facing camera can be fired outside at 15 meters by build-in pop up flash easily with no need of any other dedicated equipment)

Not to mention that for softboxes and serous shooting it is not usual to use hot-shoe flashes placed in softbox. Dedicated units with build-in radio and external power source are being used. But that is completely different story that has nothing to do with portable wireless solution that Pentax offered for ages and that was killed in K3II+K1 just to save some miserable $5 on unit production cost.

Last body was KP and it has its flash back. Reduced in power and size, but back. And I hope that some photographer returned to drive the design center instead of being ruled by accountants.

Build-in flash is important part of camera. Omitting it does NOT bring any advantage, just removes functionality.

It is the only light source you have in camera for situation, where nothing else is available. And even though I have 4 external flash units including AF540FGZ, there is no chance I will carry external flash everywhere. Then in pitch dark you have unusable camera and you only can grab your phone... which is horrible workaround method.
With K5 I can take only body+18-135WR and I have small ligt kit, that I can use to take pic even in tunnel if I have to. With K3II/K1 I'm fu**ed. Many times I left home just with the body and 1-2 lenses and then the buil-in flash was only thing that saved me later for some interior shots. There is no camera, that can take usable pic in poorly lit room just by pumping up the sensitivity. You'll quickly run out of ISO range and photos with 1/20s F3.5 and ISO51200 are simply not usable even with mighty K1 sensor. While with K5/K3 you just set 1/60s, F5.6, ISO400 and you can take clean short range pics with no problem.

Second important use is external flash commander. And again.. even though I have several external units, I am NOT willing to carry TWO just to be able to fire one off-camera flash. That is insane. All I need with K5 is one AF540FGH placed where I need and camera fires it with wireless. And yes, it is reliable. (If photographer knows how to work with it).

Even cameras like D810, D750 etc have build-in flash. It is not meant to be used on daily basis. It is backup for situation, where no other option is available.

Btw. my old K20D also can use build-in flash as AF light. Yes it is harsh and green diode is much more discrete. BUT in complete darkness this flash AF assist is capable to lit area unreachable by green diode or red AF assist light of external flash attached to camera.

Guys constantly repeating how they don't use build-in flah are like: Hey, remove headlights from my car, that is just waste as I only ride in daylight! I cannot observe mountains on horizont with those small lights anywas, so throw them away and save space for some GPS!

Wrong. If you cannot operate something, it does NOT automatically means, that others do not need that functionality. And concerning K3II this was the deal-killer for me. The only way they can remove buil-in flash is to provide small portable external flash that can feed from camera. Even the reduced unit on KP is better than nothing. And all Pentax bodies since 80" till the K3II +K1 HAD build-in flah. All of them. Until some horrible marketing guy decided to save $5 by removing that functionality from camera.

K-1 stabilization vs Olympus e-m1 mark 1 stabilization: is Oly really that good?

I have some 1/10s perfectly usable shots made with K5 and DA55-300 zoomed at 300mm.. you need to concentrate, hold camera very lightly without using muscles much and press the shutter very gently. Like with gun :) With lenses like FA*24/2 I also have some 1-2 sec exposures usable. But of course sometimes it needs to repeate the shoot several times.

Olympus has advantage with smaller sensor, while K1 has bigger, heavier and the movement is more restricted due to FF lenses image circle not being much larger than sensor.

at least small pop-up wireless flash commander
dot matrix top display
keep front+back IR

K70 hardware in KP boosted by additional noise reduction co-processor simply is not a miracle. I know that mayn KP users here are wet when they talk about their camera. But just deal with that. It is not K5/K3 line camera in many things including image processing. Only the noise reduction reached another step above K3/K3II which basically is 5-6 years older camera compared to KP (development of K3 went on full scale arounf 2010, while KP around 2015).

Still hope that they manage to create something usable soon.. in past weeks I saw so many new advertisements of guys selling whole pentax gear... pretty sad to see that. Mostly K5, K3 and also some K1.. and mostly due to system switch to competitors.

Ricoh @ CP+: Rewarding K-1 fans with a major upgrade, plus what comes next after the K-3 II?

summary:

"TA: We will continue to have the flagship which
comes... Let's say it wouldn't be a straight successor of the K-3, but anyway, the flagship in the APS-C format -- even the K-series -- will come. And surely, that development or study for the development has already started. Yeah, we cannot say when, but it will come one day."

STUDY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT HAS STARTED = we have nothing.

This is the project phase 1, where you try to put together requirements for new product. Then the development begins and after 3-4 years the product might be ready.... that means 2018 + 3 = 2021 being optimistic.
That is suicide.

So lets be more realistic - as we can see how poor the improvements are in last bodies over predecessors and how poor the investments in development probably are, we can expect some KPII maybe in late 2019 with just minor improvements (Like K5-K5II, K3-K3II, K1-K1II), and with exactly the same body shell & controls layout, which would save time and keep development costs down. But that won't help Pentax to drag any new customers.. not even to keep them.

That is what I'm afraid.

Anyway they also need to prepare some K70 successor and 645Z successor.. next year is 100th Pentax anniversary... lets hope it won't be sad anniversary

Well.. they are working on K3 successor since 2013, while K3II looked like some stop-gap emergency release against D7200..

In fact they still have nothing but claims, which is horrible strategy. Apparently they are waiting until more pentaxians leave...

That K10D/K20D/K7/K5/K3 advanced APS-C camera line is more important for Pentax than KP+K1+645 combined. But it seems, that they have to touch the absolute sales bottom to recognize what old Pentax Inc. and even Hoya knew very well (and what Fuji knows also).

Hope they will manage to bring it sooner than 2019. It already is 2+ years too late.

I believe that mainboard is identical from the beginning, they just started to assemble DNR coprocessor called accelerator unit, which simply was not available on time when K1 was introduced. That would explain everything. I'd like to see both boards... I bet they are same, only different component assembly variant is used + new firmware to run it.

If you take a look at Ricoh FF sales, there is declining tendency right after first 1/2 K1 production year. Demand was saturated quite quickly. Is it a good idea to invest way more money into another parts of suicidal FF project? Maybe it will be discontinued like another marketing fail - the Q series.

It will be better from marketing point of view to get rid of old DA* Sudden death line and rebuild DA*16-50/2.8II + some DA*50-150/2.8 and add the new DA* wide angle zoom. Place these with K3 replacement on market and create income. There are many pentaxians with K5 or K3 waiting for something new comparable with competitors.
Then they need to back up the K70 line to keep all those hundreds of thousands low-cost users with camera and 1-3 lenses, who have nothing to loose if they switch to canon, nikon, m3/4, fuji or sony.

And after all these steps are established, then they can focus on specific FF lenses and maybe even try to make another FF camera entering lost battle with incompetitive pricing of lenses and nearly zero 3rd party support...

Btw. somebody mentioned that we have FA35/2.. nice, but that lens is showing all kinds of optical problems when used on high resolution sensors. It is qute sharp and has good contrast, but purple fringing and horrible hexagonal bokeh also. And it is NOT comparable to modern 35/1.4 lenses, whose closed to F2 beat the crap out of the old FA35/2. Only (+) are the small size and weight. Not to mention rather weak AF precision & reliability. And yes, I've done many thousands of pictures with FA35/2 having it since 2009...

Proper DFA*35/1.4 and new cheap DFA35/1.8 would both be big plus for pentax lineup, as this focal length is perfectly usable both on FF and APS-C body.
