K1 Lens Correction for Legacy lenses
Posted By edo

The list of lenses that K1 supports Lens Correction in-body are :
FA* 24mm,
FA 28mm,
FA 31mm Limited,
FA 35mm,
FA 43mm Limited,
FA 50mm F1.4,
FA 77mm Limited,
FA* 85mm,
FA* 200mm,
FA* 200mm Macro,
FA* 300mm F2.8,
FA* 300mm F4.5,
FA* 400mm F5.6,
FA* 600mm,
FA* 28-70mm,
FA* 80-200mm,
FA* 250-600mm

Now is there a way Pentax will implement other FA Lenses in a futur firmware update?

Here are the lens that comes to mind about Lens Correction that would greatly benefit from it :
FA 20-35mm
FA 28-70mm F4.0 AL
FA 80-320mm
FA 20mm
FA 28-105mm powerzoom
FA 50 F1.7
FA 50 macro
FA 100 F2.8 macro

Of course I am a little sad that F lenses don't support lens correction in K1.

But as F lenses have lens ID in EXIF informations, I guess we can make Lightroom Lens Profile for them, and apply automatically those profiles to either RAWs of JPGs.

We just need to make those profile!

There is a Lightroom Lens Profile creator, and downloader for free. I will make some profile for my lenses and share them when I have the time!
F Lenses that I would love to have Lens correction profile in Lightroom are :

F 17-28 fisheye
F 35-80
F 80-200
F 100-300
F 50 F1.4
F 28
F 100 macro
F 135

There are some Lightroom pentax crop sensor lenses profile downloadable right now from the Lightroom downloader but none specifically for the K1.

I did search the forum for such a thread but I haven't found. Hope we can build a library of Lens profile for our Legacy Pentax Lenses on the K1!

And for Pentax A Lenses, that is recognized as A Lenses, but without focal length (appart from what you enter in the Shake Reduction setting), you can apply manually in batch those Lightroom profiles.

K and M Lenses cannot be tell appart but those profiles can still be applied manually in batch.

Still those K, M and A profile would still be awesome to make avail.

What was it like to move to the K-1 ?

When I got the Pentax k1, my photo bag got bigger. My lenses were bigger and my files were better!

Now that I get used to it, I crop more and more, as a result I don't bring longer lenses with me anymore, and reduced the number of lens dramatically. So weight is controlled.

This is natural in my opinion as landscapes requirements are more pixels than a portrait for example.

Oh and yes, k1 makes me happier, by using my lenses on FF finally!

Yes, it's awesome lens. Very very light, makes a nice alternative to monster zoom. But it's slow. IMHO it's just fine as I have never yet hit the ISO limit (12800 for my taste).

Sharpness is up there, nearly prime like. I have yet to test the corners exhaustively, but for general use, it's perfectly sharp closed one stop down.

I love the comptactness, the 49mm filter thread shared with the F 80-200 (which is ever more awesome that this F 35-80).

Overall, I'd say that if I only want to bring two AF zooms I would choose FA 28-70 AL and F 80-200, but if I bring my FA 20-35mm along, then the F 35-80 replace the FA 28-70 AL!

Best wide angle lens for K-1?

Pentax FA 50mm 1.7 is highly recommended, I am starting to prefer it to the 1.4.

It's very light, doesn't need a hood so it's very compact. And the IQ is so good even wide open. Less lateral and longitudinal CA wide open. It's sharper at f2.0 and faster.

The F version seems more available is highly recommended for a fast cheap prime.

Luigi strap handmade in Italy

The model is Genius strap. It's pretty expensive but the quality is there.
I choose the color named RAF distressed pilot. And it's lined in kaki green suede leather. It's very nice, but as usual your mileage may vary.

Have anyone tried cheap FF lenses on the K1?

You are right, I totally agree. Special job need special lenses!

But for jobs that requires ultra wide angles, or tilt/shift features, of fast telephoto advantages or ultra fast prime, I guess you would not find that many bargain lenses now! And then (before K1 release) those were pretty rare too! (UWA Tokina 17mm is an example.)

Consumers zooms back then, were pretty average performance wise. But some of the better optically constructed consumers zoom are pretty awesome on the K1!

For the limited time I had to play with my too numerous lenses I would say that the bargain lens in the pentax line up are there. Just need to dig them up!

And I agree that you sigma is not the best zoom ever made. But looking at your shots, I think I could totally live with that ( and some post processing)!

Bargain lenses for K-1?

I took a look at the review in the review section about the new DFA 28-105mm and surprisingly it's seems like another budget zoom, but costs 600€...

Prior to K1 launch, I thought why not buy all those highly rated cheap zooms for cheap before the K1 storm unleashes and price to climb up.

Here I only mention auto aperture Pentax lenses.

PS : there are more or less CA in those corner, and even on the edge of the UWA zoom. But this is to be expected and nothing LR or even profiling won't cure! So no issue for me. If you want no CA, be prepared to pay the price or make automatic profiles for those lenses.

I have,
F 70-210 : superb lens.

F 80-200 : extraordinary lens. The best I think but slow. It's a non issue with the sensitivity of the K1 IMHO.

F 35-70 : nice.

F 35-105 : disapointing (may be my copy that I cleaned)

F 100-300 : fair. But gets the job done. CA on the edge but SHARP!

F 35-80 : extraordinary but short range and not that wide.

FA 28-70 AL : very very nice. Less CA than usual

FA 28-105 PZ : superb lens

Now the manual zoom lenses:

A 24-50 : superb

A 70-210 : superb

And the expensive zoom and prime so no bargain there. But for the price I paid I would say yay bargain for me!

F 17-28 FishEye : just superb

FA 20-35 : I love this one

FA 50 1.4 : I always loved the 50 1.4 from asahi till now

FA*24 : I love the rendering for portait. Fresh.

The review section, if dig up smartly is immensely rewarding for user experience.

Lens sample varies too, expectations from a lens too. But be aware than they are either for film, or for APSC so the real deal with K1 is not yet very clear in those review.
I guess it's just why there are still hidden gems to discover on the K1.

Was a bargain not long ago :

Pentax FA 28-105mm PZ is a very nice lens. Sharp but heavy.

Pentax F 35-70mm is very light and sharp. I like it a lot!

Pentax A 24-50mm feels right at home on K1. That build quality is so good in the hands and it's sharp lens as well.

Pentax FA* 24mm f2 is the bomb. I love the rendering

I just did a little outing just to show how great is the FA 28-70 f4 AL :
Don't fall for the marketing that new is better. A sharp lens will still be sharp when the K1000D with 100 Megapixel comes out!

One thing that we found out using the K1 is that the pixel or so of purple fringing is not that big of a deal when you have 36MP!

I bought this lens 30, mint from japan, and paid 30 of TAX (thank you french system!)

Money well spent if you ask me.

The lens is a dream to carry. Very fast and sharp.

Save them as they are full rez and view them on a 4K TV screen...

That is sharp.

Sorry for the inconvenience. It's true that it's very bothersome for some connections.

28th april 2016. K1 delivered in FRANCE!

You did it!

The dream is finally reality. Come on Canikon, the battle just begins!

I fear until the last minute that the delivery would be delayed, but I guess my order was finely handled.e

I just went to my local photo shop who were kind enough to call me to say the K1 arrived even though it was 17h30...
Well, the battery is charging and it's already evening. I guess tomorrow is a good shooting day for sure!

Handling is very nice. It's a chunky grip in hand, but secure and stable. Look small from afar, but when you hold it, it's a nice little brick.

I still need to set the options. Will report later! Here are some pics OF the K1 with a small sample of the lenses that await to be tested.

New glass - old glass. Which lenses should Pentax revisit?

All those lenses deserve an homage edition :

My 50 1.4 because the lens design is a legend. Make the FA weather sealed and with silent focus!

My A35 2 into a f1.4!

My A24 2.8 cause it's classic and light WA

My A50 1.2 into a 1.0!

My A50 1.7 with 9 blades and SDM for light killer sharp lens

My FA*24 2 because it's too heavy and need a black coat

My A100 2.8 because I love that lens...

I think Pentax especially needs to do a 85mm f1.8 for us mortal, compact and with character like they made in their glorious past. Reflex and portrait are made for each other... And the FA* is sure expensive and with flaws in the digital age. As is the A*85 1.4
