I really like this idea especially. Now that I have my K3 back it's not as urgent, but I may do this as needed.

Out of warranty, so out of pocket (~$300). But I'm impressed with how quickly they fixed and returned it! They actually don't even ask what is wrong with the camera when you send it to them, they just have one charge estimate and do a full run-down.

This one's reviews say that the aperture control only works with lenses that already have aperture rings, so I bought https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00FAAK1UY/ instead. It didn't have enough reviews to ensure that it'd work, but I'm happy to report that it does! It has an extremely short turning radius for aperture control, but at least it works!

Thanks for your replies everyone. It's sad that there aren't any smart adapters for the K mount; I was led to believe that that would be an option.

Unfortunately my most used lenses do not have aperture rings, so it's not just a matter of focusing

Hi all,

I have returned from my trip to Iceland where I had the misfortune of ending up with a malfunctioning K-3 and ending up with a new Sony a6000. I was really hoping that once I got home I'd be able to acquire a K to E adapter so I could at least use the a6000 as a backup body with my existing lenses, but my searches are not yielding any smart adapter results, only ones for manual control. While I do sometimes(rarely) shoot with manual lenses, most of my lenses, including those I use most, are not manual lenses, so those options aren't sufficient for me. Forum search isn't yielding many discussions on this either.

Are there no good options for a smart adapter? Am I stuck with just the kit lens on the Sony for now? Honestly then the question becomes, do I send my K-3 in for an expensive fix and sell the Sony at a huge loss, or give up and sell off my Pentax gear and go E mount? Investing in Sony lenses without selling off the Pentax gear isn't an option for me right now, and I don't think I'll be happy keeping around a second body to use with just its kit lens.

Thanks. The camera's nice, but I do miss the lenses I brought. The purchase would have been a lot easier to swallow too if it weren't twice as expensive as I could have gotten it for back in the states... My budget's shredded, and forget getting lenses or accessories for the Sony any time soon

Went into the only camera store in the second largest city in Iceland, but they didn't do camera repair. Ended up having to bite the bullet and buy a massively overpriced Sony a6000 so I'd at least have a camera for the next week that I'll be in Iceland :( they didn't have a K to E adapter either so stuck with the kit lens, and borrowing from another guy using E mount lenses whenever he's not using them

It's not the screen, and live view doesn't work. After some more experimentation it turns out that the shutter also won't open, so forcing the mirror up won't work for live view. Any ideas on how both the mirror and the shutter could be failing at once?

K3 mirror stuck - issue on photography trip - help!

Hey all,

I'm currently on a photography trip in Iceland, back at camp earlier than the other guys due to a sudden problem with my camera. As I was shooting some auroras, my pictures suddenly started coming out all black. Upon further investigation, it turns out my mirror would not flip up. Attempting to flip it up through other options such as mirror flip up would produce a small whine, like the motor wasn't able to push it up.

A strange thing about this is that the resulting 'pictures' of blackness have the exposure compensation icon, though it is labeled 0.0. The camera wasn't bumped, or exposed to moisture around the time I was shooting tonight. Temperature's around 32 F. Trying another battery and pulling and putting back the SD cards didn't help. Tried searching the forums but no luck.

I still have about a week left on the trip, and this is the only camera I brought. Really dreading losing use of this camera... Can you guys help????

I'd like to get a copy of this lens. I don't care how the body is, as long as it's excellent to flawless optically. Hoping for $300-350 shipped - the lower the better!

Thanks!

My experienced 'guide' recommends the Sigma, which is attractive as the cheapest option on the list. Unfortunately it's also the biggest and heaviest... perhaps I'll get that, sell my 40mm, and stretch my budget to also get the 15mm

The 16-50 is out of the running for me - way too expensive for what it is vs the other options.

Thank you for your input everyone. I would have liked and even expected more conformity in advice (so I could be more fully persuaded!), but I really appreciate the variety of opinions. Unfortunately my choices have grown rather than narrowed - I am now also considering the 16-85! Although I would like a lens that brings more to the table than just better sharpness over the 18-135 kit.

A little bit more detail about my the trip - I'll have 10 days in Iceland, and I'm planning on packing light. By light I mean fitting clothes, camping gear, camera, and accessories in a carry on and a small 'personal bag' (basically what airlines allow you to bring with you onto the plane). I'm hoping to keep the lens purchase budget to <$500, though it is stretchable with very good reason.

All my options would be purchased used for sure. The trip is with someone who's done multiple photography trips to Iceland, and included in the itinerary are waterfalls and coasts(hence the desire for WR for protection against water spray, in addition to the possibilities of rain) and camping(low light photography!)

I really wanted the DA* 16-50 to be the perfect fit, but looking at the reviews for it, it seems hard to justify paying twice as much for worse performance vs the Sigma. I'm really not hot on the SDM motor either.

I really do like the 15mm option - is it really OK to risk with a lot of windy water spray? Has anyone used it with a rain sleeve?

I'll be traveling to Iceland this September, and am looking to add to my small lens collection in preparation. From my current collection, potential candidates to take with me are: 18-135mm WR, M 50mm f1.7, and 40mm Ltd. I have the K-3.

Initially I was thinking that I'd simply add the 15mm Ltd to the mix as I expect this to be a landscape oriented trip, but two things about it worry me. One, the speed of the lens at f4. For the most part that would be absolutely fine for landscape, but I know there will be low light opportunities as well (astro, Aurora) and while I could work around it, I'd feel more comfortable having the option of a wider aperture. An alternative I'm looking at is the Sigma 17-50 f2.8, which could replace both the 15 and the 40 and also be a nice fast lens to have for the future.

Second, and more importantly, the lack of weather sealing. I'm expecting to shoot through wind, rain, windy rain, and lots of water spray. I could buy a rain sleeve (can someone confirm that that works with the 15mm Ltd? It looks like they work by cinching at the lens, and since the 15mm Ltd is so small...) but being able to shoot without it using WR sounds a lot more attractive for its convenience and accessibility. To that end I'm considering the 20-40 Ltd to take along with the 18-135 as a fully WR kit. Looking through this forum though, opinions of that lens seem polarized, and the loss of 5mm at the widest end vs the 15mm may be just as limiting as a slow lens speed (I can workaround it, but it'll take time and effort that may make me miss the shot). The lens is also costlier than the 15, but I'd sell my 40 to make up the difference.

What do you guys think? What would you choose (if you had to buy into the options)? I'm trying to pack light, so that is a big factor as well, and prevents me from combining multiple options.

Thanks!
