Auto focus is not continuous for video for any Pentax camera. The PLM55-300 supposedly will (with K-70??), but no, it doesn’t really.

For that, you need a different brand. Maybe Sony?

Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC FLARE PROBLEM

If you won’t post example photos we can’t very well help you. That said, the PF staff did an extensive comparison between the Sigma, Tamron and Pentax lenses in this range, including flare.

DA* 16-50mm vs. Sigma and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Comparison Review - Image Quality: Flare | PentaxForums.com Reviews

The Tamron was rated best for flare.

For CPL filters, the B+W multicoated perform best for flare. The Hoyas do OK too. I don’t think that Tiffen filter is on the same level as B+W.

I’d think Shutter Priority would be better for action, speed depends upon how fast the action is. May want a good flash for fast action.

The Tamron is noisy and a bit slow to focus. The IQ is amazing and it focuses very closely. I bought my Tamron for an event with plans to sell it. I still have it because it’s so good at so many things. It’s my go-to for butterflies and flowers and portraits.

Also, an upgrade to a used KS2 will give you a huge improvement in low light focusing and also much nicer high ISO performance.

Pre-emptive seller's remorse

I feel this way about my FA31 and Sigma 8-16. For how I use the 30mm focal length, the Sigma 30 is better 75% of the time, the 31 better 25% of the time. Hard to justify keeping both, but I cant bear to part with it, other than maybe to get a mint, low serial number silver one, but that's a different problem. The 8-16 I like, but use very seldom.

If my bank account were lighter, I'd have more trouble justifying keeping them, but I can afford it, so I keep them, just in case. I may still sell them, just to free up cabinet space, but maybe not. Sandy, I think you are in the same boat. It's not like you need to shore up your retirement account, or selling the system will help you afford a trip. Keep it, use it occasionally, and be happy.

The KS2 is an inexpensive (used), lightweight choice that includes more MP than your K1 in crop mode, and has a flippy screen.

I’d like to know if they ever thought about putting a 7-bladed straight aperture in the 10-17 so we could have amazing starbursts from this lens.
And maybe put the straight blades back in the 15HD, too.

Mineral / salt stains on lens - damanged coating or how to clean?

If it is a salt or mineral, I would not use a lens pen to clean it. You will drag the mineral deposits around and scratch the front element.

I would use a small soft brush and distilled water, be careful to not let it get to the mount end. I’d have someone hold it mount end up. It may take some time, but I’d resist using much mechanical force.

Have you tried cleaning the rear element? Use an alcohol lens wipe maybe. Looks like something on one element, if it’s not the rear one send it to Sigma for repair.

16-50 DA* vs. Sigma 17-70 Contemporary

I have the earlier Sigma 17-70 the screwdrive version and the 16-50. The 16-50 is a little better in the corners, constant f2.8, slightly better with flare, and WR. You lose 50-70, and the Sigma focuses closer. The SDM will probably fail and you’ve got to be prepared to fix it or convert it.

If I didn’t have money for both, I’d keep the Sigma unless you want to shoot in the rain. Use the money to go somewhere to take photos.

Edit: I never have a green blob in the center on my 17-70. Something may be up with yours. Do you use the hood?

Help! Advice on Super Wide Angle Lens for K-30

The DA15mm is not as wide as the 10-20, obviously. It's also not really any sharper. It is legendary for flare resistance. If you like the sun in the frame, that is an addictive lens. We have a huge thread full of examples from this lens. here:The 15mm Limited controls my mind - club - PentaxForums.com

It's not a "technically great" lens. The corners are a bit soft until f8, but there is really something about it. When I take out the 15, my shots are just better.

You can get the Sigma 10-20 in either version, I also have the Sigma 8-16 which is sometimes available, though not super common. The Tamron 10-24 is also available, though the comparison tests show that lens is not quite as good as the other choices, it's a great value and still a decent lens.

As suggested, the 10-17 fisheye is another choice. Not super fishy at the 17mm end, and still very very wide at that end. The 10mm end has a 180° view. Amazing.

Best cheap thin 50?

If you want small, save up a bit and get a used 40XS. The thinnest lens you can mount on Pentax.

The 55/1.8 or 55/2 is hands-down the best lens for ~$50. I have the Takumar version, but the K-mount ones are also cheap.

On foot, exploring places and doing photography, I find a KS2 and a 16-85 to be an ideal companion. If I’m feeling like carrying more, I stick the Sigma 8-16 and DA55-300 in the bag. Makes for a fun vacation and quite good photos.

How best to use a HD Pentax-DA 21mm F3.2 Limited

The biggest thing about the 21 that is special is you can put the sun in the frame without flare. Try shooting in better light, when the sun is low, and get the sun in the frame.
