Old syle Helios-44-2 bokeh

Hi Voe,

What follows is OT a bit. Hope you don't mind.

I have a Helios-44M-4. It gave me a scarce when I mounted it first time on my k10d because I had great difficulty to dismount it.

I later gathered that the Helios, unlike the Takumars, has no A/M switch. Hence the stop down pin could get stuck into certain opening of the PK mount. This therefore impedes the unscrewing of the M42 lens from the camera body. I did not recall what I did to get the stop-down pin undone and was hence able to dismount the lens.

Since then, I dared not to try the Helios-44M-4 on my k10d anymore. Seeing your shots, I am now tempted to try it out again. Could you kindly share with me how you overcome this hurdle of dismounting the lens from a DSLR body? Thanks!

For your information, I used a genuine Pentax PK-M42 adapter.

[Help] Find a PK or M42 adapter for a lens

I spent a princely sum of $8.40 inclusive of shipping to buy a T2-PK adapter. Removed the inner threaded ring, and it fitted the mirror lens perfectly.

I now have a 500mm f8 lens with PK mount for less than $84 including shipping. Need to find a bright day to try it out on my k10D.

Thanks for all comments and suggestions.

How to use Fujica M42 lens on Pentax DSLR

Sorry for my ignorance of Fujica M42 lens.

On my Takumar 50mm f1.4, I have a pin like this.

I have no problem mounting and dismounting the Takumar on my k10D using the Pentax m42-Kmount adapter. No modification of the Takumar is required.

I suppose the Fujica pin is not the same as the Takuma pin. Am I right?

There is one Mir-24M on sale in eBay right now. Search "Mir 24M" will get you there.
It is priced as Buy-It-Now for $149.
Good luck!

Don't know if the Mir-24M is a macro or not.
But its rendering is compared favorably against a Flektogon 35mm.
See the 3rd post in this page which shows two identical scenes to compare the Mir against the Flek.

What about Mir-24M 35mm/f2.0?

I have read that it is a porr man's version of DA35. It is also relatively fast.

Right now, I can only find a Mir-24N (Nikon mount) costing $60 Buy-it-now in eBay. There is no Mir-24M (M42 mount) available at the moment.

Shutter release not working K10

This could be due to a depleted battery. Try to swap in a fully charged battery, if you have a spare.

The battery gauge on the k10d is quite abrupt. One moment, the gauge shows the battery is full. The next moment, it will show empty.

[Help] Find a PK or M42 adapter for a lens

Hi,

I have bought a Seikanon 500mm/f8 mirror lens from eBay.
Its mount is neither PK nor M42.
Need Pentaxians' help to identify what adapter it is?

(a) Lens with the adapter

(b) Lens with the adapter detached after loosening 3 screws
NOTE: Can see the lens mount has no thread but sloping non-cylindrically like a rocket nozzle

(c) The non-PK and non-M42 adapter with "M7000 Japan" marking
NOTE:Can see the 3 screws for attaching the adapter to the lens

(d) Closer look of the adapter attached to the lens but with the screws loosen
Note: Can see 2 screws on the left and right of the adapter
Note: The "M 7000 Japan" marking in picture (c) above now faces the lens bottom rim and becomes hidden

(e) Closer look of the lens without the adapter
Note: Can see the lens mount has no thread but sloping non-cylindrically like a rocket nozzle

This is not a T-mount, nor an Adaptall adapter.
What type of adapter is it?
Need to know the adapter-type before searching for a PK or M42 mount of this adapter-type.
Please help. Many Thanks!

Here is my personal perspective.

My orginal intention was to try out manual focusing lens. I was not sure if I could live with MF lens or not. The focusing screen is a tool to help me make a decision to go the MF lens route or not. Owing to this uncertainty about MF or not MF, the cheapo focusing screen is the natural economical choice. For less than $90 (1 MF lens + 1 focusing split screen), I was already equiped to test out a Takuma 50mm lens using a cheapo split screen as the focusing tool.

As it turns out, I love using MF lens and the cheapo focusing screen is a wonderful tool with no problem at all. I did not use the shim that came with the screen and focusing was spot on. Hence there is no need for me to purchase the premiere tool - Katz Eye - and thus avoid paying a premium.

I bought mine from the same eBay seller. I have also installed it on my k10d with no use of the included shim. The screen works very well. Combining this screen and the O-ME53 eye-piece magnifier, I can MF accurately 99% of the time.

Mine is a 45 degree split screen, plain version without grid line. It costs $30 inclusive of shipping.

I also bought from the same seller (i.e. saved shipping cost) a tool kit for changing split screen. The kit costs $4 and consists of a plastic/silicon-tipped tweezer, a metal tweezer, and two finger groves - one each for the thumb and the index finger. The metal tweezer is used for opening and closing the metal frame which holds the focusing screen inside the k10d, while the plastic tweezer is for handling the split screen with no risk of scratching it. The groves are for those moments when you need to manipulate the split screen with your fingers and yet leave no finger prints on the screen.

Let me state that I have not used Katz Eye. I read that its product is tailor made to suit each camera and its customer support is excellent. But you get what you paid for. I am simply pointing out a cheap option for those who need little support from the supplier and are happy to save a few tens of dollars. So everyone's mileage is different.

I bought a M42 lens from eBay. It came with this adapter.
A M42 lens can be mounted on the adapter.
What is this adapter for?
Making use of screws through the 3 holes around its flange, where will it be attached to ?

Where is pentax 135 mm fixed lens?

I read from somewhere that one should avoid the K-mount Takumar (Bayonet) 135mm f2.5. This is because its has no or single coating and hence suffers from flares. This lens has "Takumar (Bayonet)" marking on the lens barrel, instead of the usual marking on the lens rim.

The better choice would be Super Takumar M42 mount 135mm/f3.5.

Good luck!

Buying on Ebay

In general, prices of auctions that are restricted to shipping within the USA are most competitive. This is no surprice, as most brick and mortar USA retail shops also set competitive prices. On-line auctions are for bangain hunters and hence should follow the retail shops and be competitive in the USA.

One tip I wish to share is to make the effort to send a message to the seller to check if he/she will ship outside the USA. Sometimes the sellers are willing to do so. It helps if you have a good positive rating to convince the USA sellers that a transaction with you is worthwhile compared to any non rated USA buyer.

You may like to help some USA sellers who have never shipped overseas by pointing them to the USPS - The United States Postal Service (U.S. Postal Service) on-line postage calculator, when you ask them about shipping fee. By the way, you can also use the same postage calculator to check if the seller's shipping charge is reasonable or not.

Good luck!

I use the cheapo screen from the same eBay seller.
With this screen and the O-ME53 magnifying eyecup, I can achieve spot on MF 99% of the time. My total cash outlay is about $70, much cheaper than Katz Eye.

Don't get me wrong - Katz Eye is a good product and its customer support is excellent, so I read from this and other forums. But everyone's mileage is different. So I am just offering you another alternative.

Here is a pictorial guide to change the focusing screen. It is no sweat at all.

Thanks for the link.

I have found one Pentax mirror lens 400-600mm f8-f12 on sale in eBay. It ended at $433 not meeting the reserve price. The Buy-It-Now price was $750.

Interestingly, this lens has dual focal lengths and was made by Pentax.

Slightly OT here:

Last time when I serached eBay, i saw many 500mm mirror lens on sale. Majority of them are look alike having f8.0 aperature but with various brands such as:

Seikanon
Guantaray
Ricoh
Elicar
Kalimar
Sirius
Centon
Soligor
Pheonix

Just wonder if most of these lens were re-badged mirror lens from the same OEM.
