K200D & Varta Ready2use NiMh's ?

No, I only use rechargeable batteries. I refuse to buy primary cells of any description as they are bad for the environment.

As previously mentioned cleaning the battery terminals with alcohol and freshly charging the batteries makes the camera work.
It wants to see that initial high voltage level then it is happy.

My guess is it's a firmware thing.

The fact it won't map out the bad pixels either tends to suggest they really need to bug fix the firmware in this model for multiple issues.

Both these problems have existed from new and have been reported by others.

Hard to enjoy a camera that switches it's self off after every 3-4 shots (without flash even) and on a full set of eneloop batteries. :(

As for the battery meter, I don't think I've mentioned paying any attention to it so far as I don't.

I wouldn't call something that has 3 levels much of a meter anyhow. Basically two lit up sections giving 3 possible scenarios. (full, half full, and empty).

However as you've brought up the subject of the meter here's another interesting thing about this problem.

Full set of batteries inserted for the first time.
Turn on the camera. One bar! Half full reading.
Turn off. On again. Full!
Again. This time empty.

And so on. Random results every time. It's all over the place.

No there is something seriously wrong with this model and this battery issue that's been reported by many many people right from the word go.

The big question is. Is it a hardware design fault that can't be rectified? Or is it something that can be addressed in a firmware upgrade?

Hopefully the latter!

OK 4 ish years later and I'm back at it again.

I hadn't done much with my K200D for some time as i found it had a few stuck pixels that the cameras firmware just will not map out.
Going back through all my photo's I find it was a fault from new (day one). :( You can imagine my disappointment, after all we buy these camera's for their high quality images.
This and the battery issues prompted me to just pack it away and give up on Pentax for some time. :(

Well I've started to get a bit of interest again in DSLR since seeing two new items released.
The hd-pentax-da-55-300mm-f4-5.8-ed-wr lens
HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED WR Reviews - DA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database
And the pentax-af-540fgz-ii flash
PENTAX AF 540FGZ II reviews - Pentax Camera Accessory Review Database
(Both weather sealed).

Since buying the K200D in all this time I still have not seen a replacement body I like. (AA battery support [in main body], Weather sealed body, penta prism (not mirror), Battery Grip option, live view, & lastly HD video support.

So I'm tossing up buying some new accessories like this lens and flash to use on my K200D once again until a newer model finally comes out that I like.
This is also assuming that the dreaded stuck pixels don't annoy the hell out of me again. And that I can get around the AA battery issue.

Anyhow this brings me back to the original subject. (Battery issues).

Now I have noticed some interesting things since playing with the camera again.

I am currently testing with the following batteries. (Both new & used).
- Sanyo Eneloop [1900mAh]
- Varta ready2use [2100mAh]
- Aldi Active Energy [2300mAh]
- Aldi Ultracell [2000mAh]

I have noticed something interesting.
Regardless of the brand of battery the camera still plays up the same.
I also cleaned the battery terminals of the camera and batteries with alcohol just to be sure and did get some improvement after this.

But the big thing is for the camera not to play up the batteries need to be freshly charged.
let them sit for a few days and bang, same problem.
The camera just does not tolerate the lower resting voltage of the batteries. However cycling the same rejected batteries in the c9000 charger @500mA discharge shows perfect "as new" capacity. (Nothing wrong with the batteries).

I really think what's needed is a firmware update for the K200D that recognises that the lower voltage is acceptable.

Now back on to chargers.
I have noticed that there is now a new charger that to me looks to be based on the Maha c9000 design but with some new very nice features.

It's the SkyRC NC2500 Charger.

NC2500 Charger

This charger has the interesting ability to link to an Android device and display real time statistics on the battery as it's charged and discharged.
You can actually see the voltage curve of the battery as it's discharged over time.
This would be very handy for knowing exactly how the different branded batteries react.

This charger is now also on my shopping list. They run out at about US$99 + postage.

I'll post more info in future as I'm sure this is going to be an ongoing issue for many K200D owners.

Thanks Sterrettje!

I tried the flash on the camera and it did in fact work and trigger when I pressed the shutter button.

I have no idea how to use it yet but it did work and I did manage to get a couple of pictures that were viewable. And a lot that were very over exposed too!. LOL

I noticed on Auto the camera seemed to set the exposure time much longer then the in camera flash would.

Also I could not get the shutter to trigger in complete darkness. The camera would just try and hunt for focus.

The hot shoe adapter has the cable connector on one side so it blocks the in camera flash from pooping up when fitted.

I also think I made a mistake sliding the hot shoe adapter off the camera while the camera was still on.
I noticed that there are multiple connections on it and was a little concerned that the ball bearing might have shorted across a couple while sliding across. But hopefully it is designed to avoid this?

This has been a lot of fun so far. I've waited years to finally have a few lenses and a flash to play with. :)

Oops! I've already had the lens's on the camera. :(

I hope I haven't given my K200D the clap! :(

I worked out how to set the camera to take pictures from a Googled link.
It's quiet cool how the green button works with the manual lens's.

I assume the settings revert back when I put the digital lens back on?

I would think that if the 50mm lens was completely disassembled and treated surly the single spore inside would be killed off and safe to use wouldn't it?

And perhaps the flash voltage issue could be got around with some sort of adapter or trigger?
It would be good to be able to use this flash as I don't have and have wanted for some time an external flash for night shots.

Could it be set up to remotely trigger or something with some sort of receiver?

Here's the pic's I took.

Hi Guys,

I was very surprised to find a box of Pentax bits at a local Ham Fest the other day.

I have never seen any lens's etc for sale anywhere second hand before and was shocked to see this box of stuff on a Ham Radio guys junk sale table.

The guy said make an offer, it all has to go. I said well, I could not even come close to offering you what this would be worth.
He said you'd be surprised. Have a go. So I said $20 expecting him to laugh. He said $25 and it's yours.
I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough!. LOL

This is what I got in the box of bits.

ASAHI Pentax KX SLR Camera
Pentax MZ-10 SLR Camera
METZ 45 CL-1 Hammer head Flash. With Bracket, Hot Shoe cable, & 2x batteries. (one is Alkaline dummy case).
ASAHI SMC Pentax-M 1:1.4 50mm Lens
SUN-ZOOM 1:4.5 85-210mm Lens. With cap's, case, and manual.
SUNACTINON MC AutoZoom 28-80mm 1:3.5-4.5
SIGMA ZOOM 28-80mm 1:3.5-5.6
Telescope mount.
A funny plunger cord thingie. ???
A180 Polar France Filter.

All lens's are "K" mount and all bar the Sigma have Japan filters on the front.

Now here are my questions.

What out of this can I use on my Pentax K200D ?

As specially can I use the flash? I don't have an external flash yet so I was wrapped to get this one.
Can I simply piggy back the hot shoe connector on to the top of the K200D?

All bar the Sigma lens don't have those funny little ball bearing data connectors on the mounts. The lens's fit but when I depress the shutter button on the K200D it doesn't take a picture. How come? Do I have to set something somewhere?

Sadly the 50mm lens has a germinated spore on what looks to be the inside of the outer front lens.
I'm pretty handy with stuff, can I pull the lens apart myself and clean this off?
If so what tools will I need. Where can I buy them? And what cleaning agents should I buy and from where?
Or if there is someone local to me that is into this sort of thing and can help out I'd be wrapped!

Lastly can anyone explain the benefits of the different lens's to me?

Here is a link to pictures I took today of my Ham Fest score.

K200D Dead / Stuck Pixel ?

Yep, tried the Pixel mapping function several times. (See my original post).

>> " lastly tried the pixel mapping feature from the setup menu several times. "

Made no difference.

I also flashed the camera to the latest firmware after posting the message.

Made no difference, but I didn't expect it to really. As it wasn't mentioned in the release notes.

It's a strange one.

I have looked back through old photo's and it's hard to spot on certain images. But I think it's been there for a while if not from new.

Disappointing really.

I can't understand why the mapping feature doesn't work.

Oh and I tried to crop the image and failed. So sorry for the big black picture. LOL
I guess I need a decent paint package. :)

K200D Dead / Stuck Pixel ?

Hi, Wondering if I have a dead pixel on my camera?

It's a K200D and I started noticing a bright star like spot some times on peoples faces and such.

I zoomed in and sure enough there is a bright white dot with 4 like duller star effect dots around it.

I tried cleaning the sensor with an Air-Rocket, tried the camera's in built sensor clean (shake) several times, lastly tried the pixel mapping feature from the setup menu several times. .

I also tried taking a black picture with the lens cap on and also a picture with no lens at all.

The dot is always there in the exact same spot exactly the same as before.

I have attached a .JPG taken with lens cap on.
Also the second small image is a crop of the area containing the sus pixel.

To view the pixel, zoom in all the way in the Pentax picture browser and then scroll up the screen. You will see it about 1/3 down from the top of the image on the right hand side.

It just seems to be this one pixel. I see no others.

Assuming this is a dead pixel. Why doesn't the camera map it out?
Is there a fix? Firmware upgrade perhaps?

Camera has only taken 2239 pictures.

Looks like it's decent quality at least.

But OMG, look at the price. Terrible for something that should come standard with the camera. :(

If only they made one for the K-5. I could finally upgrade from my K200D

When will Pentax learn that people want AA ability in a weather sealed DSLR.

+1 on the 55-300mm WR.

I've been holding off hoping Pentax will release a WR version of this lens.

But please it must have quick shift focus.

I so hate the new low cost DAL lens's purely because they lack quick shift focus.

Yep. 4 Sure!

Lets face it. What made me choose a Pentax DSLR?

AA Batteries and lens backwards compatibility!.

Otherwise, if I'm stuck with Li-Ion, I might as well buy a Nikon. ! :(

Yea, It's just a shame really.

Pentax never seems to get the mix right.

I'm a K200D owner looking for an upgrade path.

I'd buy a Pentax K-r if it were weather sealed.
Although I really wish they hadn't of made the AA's option require a holder / cartridge.

Or

I'd buy a K-5 if it took AA's in the main body as standard.

I'd buy a PENTAX DA L 35mm F2.4 AL if it at least had the Quick Shift Focus.
But would also have preferred it to have weather sealing as well.

No quick shift focus and I might as well just buy a Sigma lens.

And why weather seal the 50-200mm when people really want the longer reach of the 55-300mm? And the worst part is the competitors offer the bigger 300mm lens in kits so Pentax really isn't keeping up with basic things in some ways.

In my mind Pentax just isn't doing enough market research when designing new products.

Another side point is that there are already AA sized Li-Ion cells!.
Why not just use those and detect the voltage difference. ??
Some LED Torch manufacturers are already doing just that!. Creating devices that will take any AA cell in any chemistry including Li-Ion!
Then every ones happy!.

Yes, if the K-r had weather sealing I'd buy one.

However I'd rather get a AA powered K-5 really.

AA's vs Li-Ion hassles / disadvantages?

- Rechargeable AA's are convenient and available in most places.
- You can keep an eye on individual AA cell capacities and match like cells together. Also know their performance and life expectancy.
- AA's are cheaper.
- LSD AA's maintain 75% of their charge for up to 12 months now.
- AA power densities have improved and are approaching Li-Ion's now.
- Many chemistries exist to best suit the users needs in the same AA format. NiCad, NiMh, NiZn etc.
- AA's are a standard format that can be used in many devices. Hence you can have batteries on standby for many devices not just one. Where Li-Ion packs are often custom sizes and different for every device.
- Li-Ion chemistries only have a 2 year half shelf life. (By 2 years after the day they are manufactured they have lost at least half their capacity).
- Li-Ion batteries are dangerous and prone to igniting under certain conditions. (Thermal Runaway). SEE: Warning: Exploding batteries | Networking - InfoWorld &

You Tube

Do you really want a device with that type of battery charging in your home or up against your face as you take pictures? :(

No, I'll stick with AA's thanks. !!

Yes, AA batteries are one of the key reasons I bought a Pentax DSLR in the first place.

I can't stand the hassles of custom LiIon packs.

Have found AA's to be much better for a lot of different reasons.

Hi, I couldn't read through the complete 37 pages of posts on this so forgive me if these questions have already been asked.

Will the K-5 ...

- Run from AA batteries in the main camera body?
- Be dual power (LiIon and AA's)? And require an ugly AA adapter like the K-r?

What software should I use to compress the picture to below 1MB and still retain the EXIF data?

I forgot about this until about 4PM.

By then the light was pretty crap outside and I only have cheap lens's sadly.

I took a couple of pics and then ran out of film and battery. (Batteries been sitting in the camera for months, lol).

There's still a couple of hours left. I'll see if I can think of something different to take a picture of in the house with the flash.

If only I had a tripod, decent zoom, or a better flash I could get a cool picture of our bandicoot or possum in the back yard tonight. :)
