Congrats to UncleVanya. Glad that my comment didn't hurt the choice.

It would be one way to see if more people would enter if someone who wins would try it. This is only a suggestion of course......but if I were to ever win again I'd certainly give it a try.

No need to apologize. It's not something that needs an apology. I was just making an observation and suggestion.

Well, Vanya I can see why you see nothing out of place. However, if someone comes to this contest idea new and sees that comment first thing....made by the person that will do the judging... I'd think it wouldn't encourage him to enter.
What if...in future contests... the previous winner and new contest starter sets the theme description and the general rules. Then...if people want to comment encouragement or praise any particular image... swell. Because.. at the end.. everyone who entered gets to cast one vote for the best contribution in keeping with the subject...although not being allowed to vote for themselves. After a week, or all votes are in, the contest leader announces the voting closed and states the obvious winner based on the most votes received, if the voting is by open post..... or he counts the votes if by pm style silent vote if the vote is secret. In case of a tie the one promoting the contest picks the winner. Only people who participate by submitting entries are allowed to vote otherwise.

Perhaps there ought to be a rule that the judge shouldn't make comments about the entries as they are posted. It makes anybody that may enter feel like the contest is already compromised...even though I don't think that is the case.

A lot of different responses to the subject "light". Interesting how many directions it all went. I look forward to the next contest.

Pentax Optio W20. Some days, some times of the year, the light on the water lets you know it's there. |

This one came to mind. Sony DSC-HX50V. Gulf Shores Alabama about two years ago. There is light and then there is light. No flash. Just available light. |

Since you can submit two... and maybe to give this contest a boost...
Sony DSC HX20V. Call this one ... The man in the light... Ft. Gaines Alabama where the other photo was taken. |

Ok.. I'll start it off. How about this "inside" interpretation. It's of a gun magazine exit to a disappearing battery at FT. Gaines. Alabama.
It was taken with a Sony DSC HX20V |

And the winner is:
Clockworkrat.
What can be more a public object that nobody pays any attention to than lights on tall light poles? But what makes the photo , in my mind, is the balance that draws the eye back into the photo and the fact that the lights become more like free standing art sculptures in a mode in which their true purpose of lighting is not functioning. Another thing about it is that you don't know what they are meant to light and only see their relationship to the moody cloudy sky. They could be anywhere in the world.
I won't say who is second or third. All entries that were submitted seriously were good and appreciated. I just think the "winner" was the best answer to the subject and most appealing to my subjective judgement.. |

Thanks, Bart. The bench is good....although Cubasco had that idea first.....it's still interesting. The things that look like they are from outer space.... not utilitarian...unless they can be used for something. I can't imagine what.

Since there doesn't seem to be much interest, how about another example. This is an object in a public place that serves a useful practical purpose that isn't particularly photo worthy in itself. But it expresses an essence that mirrors something about the place and it is more than just a container with a cartoon painted on it.... to the photographer... and if it seems something more than a container to the viewer then it has merit. |

I changed the last sentence of the contest rules to "Be original work and preferably new or recently." I had originally thought to encourage people to take new shots for this contest and had settled on "recent" as a qualifier. I adjusted the statement to an encouragement and not a requirement and the age of the image is not important to the outcome.

The subject will be utilitarian objects in a public space. It could be a group of objects perceived as one... like a kids swing set. It could be just one part of a set of objects. It should be something that isn't particularly noticeable as a photo subject but the photo makes the object noticeable. For instance:
Use some kind of point and shoot camera. B&W or color no difference. Be original work and preferably new or recently.
Contest ends at the end of March. Winner announced on April Fool's day in keeping with me doing the judging. . In case I think two photos are of equal merit the first one posted will get the advantage in making my selection.

Amazing to find that I was selected as the winner. I liked all of the possible choices.
I'll think over a subject for a new contest and post it soon.

Middle Bay Light. No longer an active lighthouse. In the "middle" of Mobile Bay. Repaired and painted up for the umpteenth time in recent years. It attracts fish as a photo previous to the last paint job. Same camera actually. A speckle trout caught by my brother and fishing partner on a fishing trip to that location...
