Replacement diffuser panel for AF540 FGZ II?

Here's an update in case anyone else runs into the problem. Using the broken panel, I was able to push the sliding bracket down into the flash until it seated with a click. Of course, the panel won't stay in, but now the flash thinks it is so the zoom features work as they are supposed to. Since I don't really need the panel, it's not necessary to replace it. For the rare times I need a wide angle I can always use one of my Sigma or Yongnuo flashes.

Thanks. I saw your thread, and I may have to try something like that. The hinge tips on both sides broke off (but I do have them), so I am tempted to try gluing it back together first. The tips are much smaller on the model II. I am amazed at how flashes (not just Pentax) have such a cheap part that is so difficult to replace. It's really a poor design.

Thanks swanlefitte. I may have to try that.

Thanks UncleFanya, that would work for some shots, but the flash will always assume it is wide angle with the plastic diffuser panel broken so I can not set the focal length, even in manual mode. I typically use bounce flash, and a wide angle bounce is not always ideal.

Does anyone know where you can buy a replacement diffuser (wide angle panel) for the Pentax AF540FGZ-II for a reasonable price? I pulled it out one time and the little hinge points broke right off.

Maximum ISO

On my K-3, I let auto ISO go up one more stop than the K-5, to 6400. But again, I will bump it up more if it means getting the shot. Today's noise reduction software can do some amazing things.

Hi Michael. I typically set the maximum to 3200 when I was using the K-5, but would occasionally go higher if I needed to. I would rather have to reduce noise than camera shake. It's always a trade-off. I suggest you do some experimentation to see what your eye will tolerate.

Here's an example of an indoor shot (of a ceiling) at ISO3200, f/5.6, 1/60s.

That would be me. I applied a post-crop negative vignette in Lightroom to draw attention to the center. Perhaps it is too strong?

Focus issues Tamron 70-200 with Pentax k-30 soccer

Radman, I can't argue with success - your shots look great.

For me, it's a matter of probability. If I shoot a subject 40 yards away at 200mm and f/8, I have nearly 12 yards of depth of field to work with. If I go for f/2.8, I only have 1 yard of DOF, and it's more likely I will miss the shot. But no doubt, when you nail it, it's a great result.

You are getting a lot of good advice here, so I will be a bit repetitive. I have been using this lens successfully on a K20D, K-5, and now my K-3. Here is my recipe.
  1. Manual or TAv at f/8 and 1/800. Occasionally go to f/5.6. Wider than that and it gets very difficult to get focus on a moving target.

  2. AF-C with back button focus. That way I can pre-focus on the players of interest and take my finger off when I'm trying to shoot. At f/8 I don't mind if they move a little bit. If they move too much, just hit the AF button again to refocus. Also, I don't have to worry about someone running across the frame in front of the action (line judges for example) and the camera trying to refocus.

  3. Select a focus point usually at or slightly above the center point depending on what the players are wearing. Look for a high contrast (such as white shorts and colored shirt, or a bright logo on a dark shirt). Focusing on the face or legs is too difficult. Keep the action in the center of the frame. I can always crop the photo later.

  4. Keep both eyes open as I track the action and press the shutter when something interesting happens (burst mode to raise my chances of a keeper)

  5. Shake reduction off (not needed at that speed and when panning)
