Is the K7 worth recommending?

Thanks guys. Some great information there. I have only shot with a K30, K3 and KP so much of this is news to me. I suggested the Fuji XE line (I have the x-e1) but I think he fancies the whole pentaprism thing, therefore ruling out the K-01 (which I still want, in yellow!). I suggested the K7 because I thought a K5 would be dearer than it is. He wants to do macro and star trails. I loved my K30 but couldn't recommend one after my aperture block failed. I got it fixed then a couple of weeks later a virtually new K3 (410 actuations) fell in my lap for £275. I know from my K3 that ergonomically and in terms of build, he wouldn't go far wrong with a K5. We will just have to see if I have created another pentaxian :)

Footnote. The same shop that sold me the K3 recently sold a K5 for £400, making mine even more of a bargain :)

He has about £200. After posting this I toddled off to eBay and found two K5s around £200, so I changed my recommendation to a K5. I will be working on him! A K5 for £200, that's a steal :D

Thanks for all the input btw

I have a friend who wants a DSLR for macro and lens switching. He currently uses a Fuji X100f. He earmarked a Fuji S5pro and I suggested the K7 as an alternative. Was I wrong in doing this? All I can find on the K7 is why it isn't as good as the K5

Brilliant. Thanks :) I use both methods, I think I prefer the Av route then I can lock the exposure, although, green button and exposure compensation works nicely too. On the K3, using the dof preview also gives you the exposure which is nice. For some reason I thought I had seen the meter lol. Mystery solved. Thanks :)

I have a KP and a K3. I get an exposure meter in manual mode when shooting with AF lenses but not with M42s. On the K3 I can get it when I use the dof viewer. Auto level is off. Any ideas or is that how it always was and I am going nuts?

I have both and you are right on the money. My KP is my small lens camera and the K3 comes out for the heavy stuff. I love both but the IQ on the KP is off the scale :) not that the K3 is a slouch :)

I am with Mac. I have had some blinding results from the HD version. If sharpness is your main issue try calibrating yours before you spend money. If however you want faster AF in a more compact body, go for the PLM. That's what I wanted but the offer on the HD was waaaaaay too good to pass up and I haven't looked back.

I second what Robles said, with one small addition, back button focus and exposure comp button on top set to exposure lock. Have a look at the KP video posted to YouTube by Matthias burling

Dunno, I don't have it any more. It was F4 and, whilst being a very pretty and capable thing, I had others I preferred :)

+1 for the 10-17mm fish eye. You assume it is going to be a novelty until you do a sic with one. My four entries in my photographic society open digital comp are all fishy. It is also more than just a new focal length, the whole fish eye thing, once understood, gives you a big bag of new options

---------- Post added 03-07-20 at 09:47 AM ----------

Oh, you like primes, 70mm limited? Or if you fancy something quite funky maybe a late 50s aluminium Jena tessar. The 70mm limited in smc form is cheap and sharp, the alloy tessar "Vorwahlspringblende" (buy one just for the name :) ) is also capable of amazingness, and is as old as me :)

That is such a shame. The Auto 55mm look very similar, protrude a similar amount but don't interfere with the mirror. We must be talking really fine margins. The review says it is a tokina, my understanding is that it is a tomioka. It probably is a tokina. Its amazing just how many lenses are falsely attributed to tomioka. So many false claims I am beginning to wonder if tomioka is mythical like a photographic unicorn :D

I was quite surprised when the Schneider Kreuznach edixa tele xenon 135mm fouled. That must have been more down to the threads. I don't remember it protruding. I will test all my other M42s in the morning. I know my takumars are fine and I used my 58 Zeiss tessar in a sic and that is fine too. It may well just be the variants of the DX. I can't test the Schneider, it went to a new home some months ago. It was a shame but I have other lenses that are trouble free.

Ok, the DX just and so touches the mirror on the K3. It is barely noticeable, thatís why I didnít notice it. The auto Mamiya Sekor 50mm f1.7 and the auto Yashinon 55mm f1.8 are fine, which is great as they are amongst my absolute favourites. I hadnít used manual lenses extensively with the KP and jumped to a conclusion. Sorry guys.

My DX is now a mirrorless lens and is on the list of potential sacrifices should my financial situation get any worse :)

Hmmm, like I said, the protrusion on the super sexy auto Yashinon 55mm f1.8 is similar. I will whack it on and do a quick test. Maybe it isnt as simple as how far it sticks out. ........ Maybe it is just that lens.......... Have I started another thread without foot reason again? I normally only do that when there is a competition lolol

Welcome. You will be astonished by the IQ on the KP and the way it handles iso up to 12800, brilliant! The ergonomics are different but they play very nicely with small, limited lenses. I set the top exposure button to exposure lock. In av I have back button focus, back dial is aperture, front is exposure compensation, top is Iso. That way you have everything to hand. You made a tremendous choice. The electronic shutter is lovely. There is a good video on YouTube by Mattias burling. Enjoy

Presumably a different adapter would affect focus

---------- Post added 03-06-20 at 03:23 PM ----------

When you take the shot the view finder stays dark, as you dial in the focus or unscrew the lens a little the mirror drops. I have used it lots on the K3, it is wonderful

---------- Post added 03-06-20 at 03:25 PM ----------

I thought that was the SX, my understanding is that the DX is fine. The auto Yashinon 55mm protrudes but I didn't try it. Maybe I should :)[COLOR="Silver"]

Just a bit of a heads up. Today I was shooting with an M42 Auto Yashinon DX 50mm f1.7. Whenever I focused further than 3m it fouled on the mirror. The yashika DX protrudes quite a bit from the rear, as does the Auto Yashinon 55m f1.8 and the Auto Mamiya Sekor 50mm. I presume they are all a similar design. If this is the case, the Auto Chinon will be another lens to watch. All of these are attributed to Tomiokas and are incredibly sharp. They are fine on the K3 but not on the KP. I had a similar issue with a Schneider Kreuznach 135mm edixa tele xenon and my K30, once again the K3 was fine. Takumar are fine on the KP but watch your tomiokas!

Another month over, already! The purpose, for me, of choosing the 18-135 was so that I could use familiar kit and iron out some of my silly mistakes. It is a tremendous lens though. Next month I am doing the daily in. I want to do a month of B&W (i am quite excited about it too) and will be trawling through my lens box and getting my tomiokas out! Ooerr!

Re the pinkie placement, I curl on my K3 let alone my KP :) re grips, I recently did a test of all three. I don't like the large, quite like the small and really like the medium but it is better suited for use with the limited. I have just dome the sic with the 18-135 though and it was excellent. Having said that, I was having a bad week for a number of reasons and reverted to my lovely K3 for the reassurance of familiarity :)

oops, I thought I had posted :) OK, two days ago. When I am in a photo funk, the catholic church in Garstang is a great place for a reset. The light is interesting, we have statues and textures, lovely. This was an in camera raw HDR :) the colour version is fab. Oh, its a selfie too

And yesterday, we have a snatched image of the early stages of a naturally forming committee, a quite commonplace event in small market towns.

This month has been great. I haven't gone out to shoot b&w but it has helped me to sharpen up, ready for next month when I am having a completely mono march. I am dropping the single in for a bit and doing the daily in instead. I will be taking out limiteds, vintage glass and even my Fuji mirrorless. I am quite looking forward to it :D
