Weird pattern in astro photos

Gee that shots got it all hasnt it - even a waterfall plunging into the ocean! I have only shot the bioluminescence once so should set it as a goal once the quarantine stuff lifts a little. In Tassie, the "holy grail" shot is the bioluminescence in the ocean with an aurora in the sky - there's a couple of spots that can be done :)

Weird pattern in astro photos

Hi everyone, thanks for the quick replies - had not heard of Newtons Rings before so that is something to look into :)

To PJV - no filters. Given it was a night shot I upped the ISO so I was also wondering if that was an issue (but didnt really think so) but yes - slartibartfast01 and mikeSF - I redid it without the lens profile correction and its fine. That is a really easy fix. I am in the habit of always clicking those boxes but know not to now for astro :)

Thanks heaps, I didnt think it would be this simple to fix!

Weird pattern in astro photos

Hi everyone, I have been shooting astro lots over the years and recently during post processing these strange concentric circle type patterns are appearing.

I use Photoshop CC (and therefore Camera Raw) and I am starting to think it must be something to do with that, as even when I revisit old photos, these patterns are appearing where they never used to.

I have attached a processed file. It is most noticeable in the bottom left and all up the right side. Has anyone seen this before - and more importantly - know how to deal with it?

Thanks very much!

Sunset at the "Edge of the World", in north west Tasmania. 100 second exposure captured with my 10 stop ND, and the very handy Pentax bulb mode that lets you dial in pretty much any shutter speed you like :)

Pixel Shift Processing (Photoshop/Camera Raw)

Greetings all, I have the K1 and am a big fan of the pixel shift feature. I have read through plenty of Pixel Shift articles online, and was after a bit of confirmation re processing technique.

I use Photoshop (CC) and therefore do most of my adjustments in Camera Raw before adding finishing touches etc in Photoshop.

From what I have read, it seems to me, post processing Pixel Shift files in Camera Raw simply involves dragging up your sharpening sliders much further than you usually would/could, and that's about all. Is that right? Generally speaking I have found myself dragging the "Amount" slider up pretty much all the way (ie close to 150) and even increasing the radius a little (eg 1.1 or 1.2). I dont use DCU much and I have seen reference to programs like Raw Therapee but haven't got that yet.

Is this approach (ie sharpening sliders) getting the best out of Pixel Shift processing or is there something more to it? I see plenty of commentary that Lightroom is not all that compatible with Pixel Shift but dont hear so much re Photoshop/Camera Raw.

Thanks in advance :)

SLR Lounge- Noise comparison shot K-1 vs K-1mkII @ISO 12800 - good improvement

I get more use from pixel shift on macro than any other shooting style, mainly because the subject usually isnt moving!

I originally thought the enhanced resolution was the main benefit but in the end the colour reproduction is what I really like about pixel shift. I usually shoot once with pixel shift on, and again with it off, and even just toggling back and forth between the two images on the back of camera you can see richer colours on the pixel shift shot.

K-1 mark II imminent

Pretty sure I'll do it too - assuming it is offered in Oz too that is!

Will be very interested to see really how good this new high ISO performance is. And any improvements to PS would be good to have (even though I dont do a great deal of hand held shooting, it is always good to have the newest developments on board).

Most likely I wouldnt have bought the Mkii so offering an upgrade is a great service :)

It happened to me a few months ago and I had to send it back in to be repaired. Unfortunately it seems like a not too uncommon problem. If you search the forum there are a couple of threads about it (I think I might have asked the same question when I had trouble!)

I am getting a lot of use out of my trusty old DA 12-24, at 18mm. And of course i can still use all my filters. I have the 14mm Samyang but find the distortion really detracts from the landscapes. Good for astro though. The Laowa 12mm has only just caught my attention and that is most likely going to be my next purchase.

Interval shooting problem

Or... leave the interval at 2 seconds, go into C menu 2, and into item #13 (interval shooting options) and select option 2.

This will mean that the camera will fire 2 seconds after every exposure, regardless of shutter speed ☺

K1 stuck in 'M' mode

Not sure if I am overlooking something simple in the settings or if I am going to have to send my K1 in for servicing (hope not) but for the past couple of days my camera won't shift out of M mode.

I can spin the dial fine but it remains in M no matter what I set the mode too (Tv, Av etc). It is the same in live view or not.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? Hoping I don't have to send it off for servicing. It is still under warranty though of course.

Thanks in advance.

TAV Is the Best

I too have only very recently "seen the light" - I used this mode to shoot an indoor event recently with the K1. Depending on where the action was there was either bright light from indoor lighting and/or outdoor light through windows or dark corners and shadows. Literally a light bulb clicked and I started using TAV, dialled in a fast shutter and a wide aperture and concentrated on nothing but the shooting! Some shots came back with an ISO value in the low hundreds others were many thousands (I set the max to 6400). It was one of those moments where it all just clicked (I hadn't used this mode before) and all of a sudden I now have a new tool in the shed :)

Great for wildlife too - I tried it on some Tassie Devils the other day, worked a charm as they moved from shady to sunny areas (within their enclosures of course!)

Does the K1 Allow Us to Turn Pixel-Shift ON and Remain On when Camera Restarts?

I have also set pixel shift to the fx2 button for easy on/off access. The only downside being that you still have to dive through the menu when switching between MC on/off. Pixel shift would have been a great option for the smart dial IMO.

In shooting menu #5 there is a Memory option. Go in there and check pixel shift (and any others that take your fancy!)
