Lens prices and our channel strategy in the U.S. - Ned Responses

Ned Bunnell responded:

QuoteQuote:

[...] And while I mentioned we are considering bringing back rebates to help with this transition, you need to know we also are looking at other ways to improve customer satisfaction such as lens warranties. I can't possibly share everything we are working on but the notion driven by the forums that we're not looking at this Growth in America strategy from every angle is just not an accurate picture.

First of all, there was no "transition". This was a decree and the prices went up overnight.

Second, when he says that " we also are looking at other ways to improve customer satisfaction such as lens warranties" , what he is REALLY saying is,

"If lens sales do not decrease substantially, we are not going to do anything. If they do, we will then we will look at 'other ways to improve customer satisfaction such as lens warranties'."

Read between the lines here. Pentax is going to try and hold their users hostage and see how things shake out. This policy has nothing to do with growing the brand. It is about seeing what the market will bear, and how much more money the company can make WITHOUT adding any more value to an existing product.

It all boils down to this.

Hoya tried it's very best to kill Pentax. When they couldn't, they sold it to Richo, who seems to have found a way to finish the job.

It's just time to move on. I've loved my Pentax experience over the years, but there are more complete systems, with more 3rd party support, that more than offset any benefit Pentax now offers me. It's a sad day. I hope it all works out for those of you who remain loyal to Pentax. Best of light to you all.........

Dear Ned,

Here is how this will help my local B&M store...

They will end up selling me lots and lots of Nikon gear over the next few years.

Well, I don't know. What do you think?

Two weeks ago, that lens sold new for 509 or 549 something like that,

so.....

how much luck do you think KEH would have had selling it used for 50 bucks more than you could have bought it for new..?

More good news. It appears Pentax's raping of their customer base has now spread to the used market as well.

KEH has a 15mm Ltd for 599 in LN condition.

Let's see how Richo's plan works in the real world.

Customer at the local B&M camera shop,,,, "what's the difference between Nikon and Pentax?"

B&M Salesman "Well, the K5 and the D7000 are pretty close. The big difference is in the lenses. The Pentax Lenses are more expensive and have a one year warranty while the Nikon lenses have a 5 year warranty. But we can sell you an extended warranty to cover the same 5 years for an additional 300 bucks."

Customer "Hey, do I look like my names Monochrome?"

And that is how it's going to work in the real world. Plan or no plan.

You're kidding right?

Here's what you don't get, because you are too wrapped up in your Goody Two Shoes Pollyanna "Richo has a Plan for You" BS.

Just because I will now be able to go down to my local B&M store and buy a $500 lens for $700 doesn't seem like such a great deal to me. I don't care how many Pentax lenses my local B&M store stocks. If I need or want a new filter, they have a HUGE selection of Promaster's on hand. If I want a B&W or something else, I'm out of luck. Need a new lens plate for that $1100 lens I just paid $1400 for, I have to order it from someone like B&H or RRS or Kirk. Need a new tripod, they have a HUGE selection of Slick, and a few Manfrotto's in stock. Maybe a Benro on the "high" end. How about a new bag? I waited a MONTH after I paid for my last Domke for them to get it in.

The bottom line is, plain and simple, NO B&M store is going to be able to compete with the big on line retailers. None of them.

So once again, tell me how paying $700 for a $500 lens benefits me? God I can't wait for this......

Nothing.

The ONLY one gaining here is Pentax/Richo.

That statement is irrelevant. Pentax has dictated what the retailers must sell their products for. This has nothing to do with the cost of the products to the retailer.

The only thing that has changed is we now get to pay a premium price for a product with an industry trailing warranty, unresolved SDM issues, to a company reluctant to address even the most basic accessories. If that's a positive change, this boat must be named Titanic II

Yes. I know mine was, because I have a screen shot of it there, and now it is gone.

Or maybe they just didn't approve it.

So send an E mail to B&H and Adorama's Customer Service. Let them know you think their price increase sucks and you will no longer buy Pentax Lenses from them. Let them know that Amazon is now cheaper if you want.

It doesn't matter what their response is. The purpose is to get enough e mails letting them know how you feel about the price increases that they feel compelled to let Ned or whoever know there is a significant problem.

Ned and Richo probably don't care one hoot about this forum or what people here say, and Ned either can't or wont talk to the customers, but he has no choice to talk to the retailers.

Flood their in boxes with concerns about the price increases and maybe that will get their attention.

How about naming those US dealers you claim using the Grey Market Supply Chain?

Are you accusing B&H? Adorama? Amazon? Hunts Photo? Best Buy? Who exactly are you saying is doing this or is it, pure conjecture?

I would disagree with that a bit. Nothing above 300mm, (I know they say they are bringing out the 560) no TC's, no extension tubes, no long macro, and again, as stated, the SDM issue, is a concern.

Below 100mm, it is wonderful. But there is some work to be done to bring the Pentax lens line up into the real world of being called a complete system.

Up until a week or so ago, it was also priced nicely.

Your point is flawed in that it assumes that there is no profit for whoever sells the the item.

We simply do not know what price Richo sells their products to the retailer for. All we know is what Richo has told the retailer what price the retailer must sell it to the consumer for.

And by the way Ned - it is now mid week, not early next week. I know you said hopefully, but I think Americans at least are a little bit sick of this "hope and change" mentality that is nothing more than a smoke screen for "we know what's best for you", which is what Richo seems to be telling retailers across the US.

A response is certainly in order, unless of course, you are not a man of your word.

Yeah, I think that's a fair comment.

Where this may work for Richotax users, is that if these big retailers see a significant decrease in the sale of Richotax gear, they might be the ones to put the REAL pressure on Richotax to reverse this policy. As was said earlier, if the stuff just sits on a shelf gathering dust, sooner or later, it is going to be replaced by stuff that will move and generate a profit for the retailers. I highly doubt B&H or Adorama want to be warehouses for Richotax, which is what they could eventually become with this policy.

Actually, there is another option that you might not be considering.

Some of us have working bodies with nice limited lenses. I have two k20's and a K200, and a couple of nice limited lenses. I will continue to shoot those bodies until they stop working as there is nothing wrong with them. Then I will sell the lenses.

The weak spot in my "system" is in the 300mm range. I have the DA 55-300 and while nice, I do want - "need" a prime 300 and a TC to go with it - just in case - you understand.

So since I carry two bodies with me anyway, I ordered a D7000 this weekend, and today I am deciding on a 300mm lens for it. The DA* 300 is now 1400, and because I have to purchase a 5 year warranty for 313 bucks, that brings it to over 1700. The new camera, and depending on the lens I choose, I am looking at about 2600.

If I were to upgrade one of the K20 bodies to a K5, I would be spending 1099 for the body and 1712 for the lens, or a total of 2811.

Add in the sale of the DA 55-300, even if I only sell it for 150 bucks, I will end up being ahead by close to 400 dollars.

So while I have "given up" on Richotax, I am still keeping my current bodies and lenses until they are no longer functional, and, as this forum is a wealth of information about information that is pertinent to those cameras and lenses I currently own, it would be silly to leave.
