your budget of 500 USD is quite unrealistic... as jeff pointed out :)

for ex. 500 USD is body + 18-55mm lens only. the 500 USD equiv price is india would be much higher I expect atleast 50-100$.

Rest aside, u need eneloops (rechargeabe batteries), a camera bag. It will push your price by another 2-3k Rs.

I got k-x for 560 odd with 18-55 and 50-200 kit lens. eneloops 18$ bag 50$. couple of manual prime lenses from ebay 100$ in all. pentax forum site support 10$:p i still have to buy a better memory card, may be a polarizer or 2, lens hood, and yes tripod later. and mebbe another cheapo manual lens.... so i think it burned me close to 800$. im frantically buying stuff that I may use much later because im moving back to chennai soon.

However, basic essentials body, kit lens, bag, cards, memory card and eneloops. should be close to 650$-700$. again this is US price.

My best advise would be to request someone coming back from US to get you the stuff.

The cameras shipped out have the firware 1.0 by default. I received mine on Friday and it had version 1.0. Hold the menu button and turn on the camera and it will display the current firmware version. If its 1.1 then your good, else you need to upgrade.

I thought usage of wet wipes voids warranty ?

I'm a clumsy person. So wet wipes sounds scary to me :p

Just updated the title to be more specific and giving it a bump.
I found these 2, LensPEN Lens Cleaning System and Giottos rocket blaster

Are these safe to use? Also are there better alternatives for maintenance.

I just bought a k-x and the 2 kit lens. I will be moving to Chennai in India soon.

Its a hot (temp 75 - 104 F) and avg rel. humidity of 70% all through the year. It is a very dusty environment as well.

Down the line I may plan to sell the kit lens if I do decide to upgrade. So I have to keep them in good shape to get good pictures as well as a good resale price.

What do I need for keeping the lens in good shape? Hoods, blowers, daylight filters, etc.

Thanks

i bought tamrac adventure 4. cos it was the cheapest and a reasonable quality messenger bag i could get hold of. $50. Its got adjustable straps and a great deal of room. Other suggestions that were posted in my queries for bags were tenba and packsum. but those cost twice or more. Upto you how much want to shell out.

i wanted to jump in on da40 because theres a deal floating around 150 in ebay. But looking at what marc already pointed out and what you said, i just plan to stick with the kit lens for now until i understand better what i'm handling.

looks like we are on the same boat asdf...
from what i have read there are no inexpensive good lenses. you can look at the thread which i started
K-x kit lens. How good is it?
From what the users say it is better to get used to the kit lens first before we jump to upgrade the lens and i feel its right because we are total newbies. Hope it helps...

thanks tokyo and aspiring amateur.
i really liked the safety part stressed :) i still havent zeroed out on a bag yet.
The messenger bag concept is cool but wont the bag on the hips be jostled around a lot more than a snug backpack?
I will also post a starter kit thread soon which might help other newbies know where to pick up stuff.
