K-1 Video

K1 video would have been much better if mechanical shake reduction was enabled. But, the K1 is not a video camera.

So you took a great picture, Now what?

If I took a really great picture that has commercial worth, I'd do my due diligence regarding copyright and IP protection.

As for printing, I used to own a large format Epson where I could easily output 48" wide prints on whatever media I wanted to. Sold that years ago when I transitioned from medium format to digital. During that period, I had practically unlimited access to a drum scanner though. Not anymore...

Rarely do I every print nowadays. Most of my work gets posted to my website. The images I do print usually gets done at home with a Canon Pixma printer. I'm limited to 8x10 with my current setup so anything larger goes to a professional printer.

Most folks are happy with on-screen proofs these days though...

What's Been Your Experience with KEH.com Lately? Mine... not so good

Last purchase from KEH (which way only about 8 months ago) ended in a return. Ordered an EX+ Pentax ME Super. Camera that arrived had a busted film rewind mechanism. WTF was the only thing I could say...

I've ordered a bunch of medium format stuff from them years ago and every item received from those orders matched the description. After my last experience though, I'd be hesitant to buy anything from them again.

looking for feedback on 70-200mm f2.8 lens

My 70-200 from Pentax is sharp. Only downside is the weight. I did have a Tamron in the past that had pretty good IQ but wanted something with a little weather resistance.

Maybe lifetime meant the lifetime of the solenoid... which is probably one year. Lol..
Forum: Pentax SLR Lens Discussion 10-03-2019, 10:59 AM
Does that make any sense to add the Tamron 70-200, if one already has the 50-135?

I had the Tamron but sold it after purchasing the Pentax 70-200. The Pentax is significantly heavier. The IQ is comparable if you're not pixel peeping.

That's cool. Glad it's held up. Purely anecdotal at this point, but I recall hearing stories of repaired K-30's and K-50's failing again after a certain period of time. Number of shutter actuations didn't seem to play any role in it either. Most failed repairs I think were made using the green plunger rather than the white Japanese version.

It was my daughter that was more disappointed than I was. She was a heavy user of the K-30 whereas I mostly use my K-1 Mark II or a much older K10D. Anyway, I'm sure whoever bought my K-30 for parts would have been happy with it. Personally I didn't care much about the loss since I didn't pay much for it to begin with. I just didn't want to find my daughter or myself using it one day when a great opportunity comes along, only to lose the shot because of a cheap 50 cent part that Ricoh won't own up to.

I'd hate to miss a once in a lifetime shot because of a defective aperture solenoid. Even if repaired, there's a good chance it'll fail again down the road, especially if the repair involved the same Chinese made plunger.

I had a K-30 that recently started failing. Yes, sometimes taking multiple shots or using DOF preview with small apertures would get it working again for a short period of time. But it got to the point where even 20 minutes after that it'd stop working again. I lost all confidence in it afterwards.

I sold it for parts. Got $125 for it.

Light meter apps for your phone

Last time I used a dedicated light meter was when I used to shoot medium format B&W film a lot. I still have an old Soligor spot meter which was modified by Zone VI Studios and has zone scales on the turret. Works very well to this day.

I used to own at one point a Sekonic digital meter which was primarily used for studio work or color reversal and sometimes slide film.

Could also be that your K10D requires calibration. Mine which I bought new in the box had similar results to what you describe, but I think the hits were mostly due to smaller apertures being used which essentially masked the fact that AF missed. It wasn't until I actually spent some time with a calibration gauge and access to the development menu that I as able to fix the problem. My K10D AF now hits 99% of the time, even when using wide apertures.

If memory serves, my particular K10D required +120 um adjustment to correct its backfocus habit.

Have you experienced this mirror bug?

It's only happened to me once when using Live View in FW 1.02. It hasn't come back since 1.03.

When it did happen though, it freaked me out. I could see a portion of the mirror's frame in the LCD.

A quick power cycle solved the issue immediately. And FWIW, it also happened with the grip and two fresh batteries. This was during the summer so ambient air temps were in the 80's.

Oh well. That's a shame. Would have been nice to try some of Pentax's newer glass on the Sony E-mount bodies. Thanks for the replies all.

KAF3/KAF4 to E mount adapter?

That's what I thought. Saw plenty of adapters for manual control only. Nothing that would work for newer lenses without a manual aperture ring.

Black frames!

Sounds like an aperture block failure. It'll shoot 2-3 black frames upon startup from cold then perhaps correct itself. It'll progressively get worse though, which is what happened to my daughter's K-30.

Does anyone know if a KAF3 or KAF4 to E-mount adapter exists that would allow modern Pentax glass with electronic aperture and AF control to function on Sony E mount bodies?

If you're going to do that, might as well spring for one of those monochrome OLED displays so you can have customizable information available on the top plate.

Best small tripod for Pentax K1 + 15-30

I used to have a heavy duty Giotto tripod with Manfrotto ball head that was primarily matched to my 6x6 MF cameras. However after a while, it became too cumbersome and heavy to constantly bring on trips. Now, I have a MeFoto Roadtrip Classic in carbon fiber. Specs say it'll support up to 26 pounds. Most I've ever loaded it with was my K1-II with grip and a Pentax 70-200. Combined, total weight of the camera and lens was about 8 or 9 lbs. Rock solid tripod if not extended too high. Best part, the whole thing folds into something that'll fit into a small gym bag and weighs less than 5 pounds.

Pentax K-1 screws... where to get them?

That's unfortunate if true. Their website still seems to be operational though, but would explain why no one has bothered reaponding to my emails.

That's a good idea. I might even have some that would work. I've got a lot of little metric threaded screws that I keep as spares for some of my RC toys in various diameters and lengths at home. Thanks for the idea.
