saw an executive from leica discussing the idea that going forward there will be less opportunity for proprietary lens systems. canikon (not necessarily canikonasonic in this case, due to the "L MOUNT ALLIANCE"...) are going to run out of time on the proprietary shell game you described above. as the manufacturers open their doors to 3rd parties in an attempt to stay competitive, we will see an influx if not an all out race to the bottom by 3rd party manufacturers to be the next tokina or rokinon.

the leica ceo dude seemed perfectly comfortable with all of this, hence all their willy-nilly partnerships with the likes of huawei and panasonic of late i suppose. perhaps it is a realistic strategy for the modern world? a little diversification never hurt anyone.

it is ultimately less risk for the big boys to release less lenses for the new mounts, or at least go slow and steady with their release calendar. it is certainly easier than going toe-to-toe with the likes of the budget primes from the new random companies, which seem to be getting better by the day. why spend $2400 when you can spend $500? or buy FOUR primes for $2400?? that is the next two years. companies you have never heard of in your life getting great reviews...

thanks for your take on the kp.

have heard it isn't as solid feeling in the hands as the k5 or k3, so i guess that is my last real concern. that and I was wondering if you think the kp can be used with none of the 3 included grips at all...? really hoping to get that film era box shape and lighter weight.

???? / ????????????

K&F is releasing Pentax-K to Nikon-Z adapters... to those of us who prefer that vintage look this is good news!! also, the Pentax 20mm will probably continue to skyrocket in price as a result of canon flippy screen vlogger demand...

wholeheartedly agree with you on the jc penney case study. there is room in pentax's future for a maximum of 2 aps-c DSLRs, the K-1 full frame, the imminent 645 (2019), the adorable pentax q (40 megapixel & better be out before xmas), AND the full frame mirrorless camera of everyone's dreams (or in here apparently, everyone's nightmares)... they can't release too many options, it would be ill-advised.

not sure about this continuum of bigger cameras though, especially if they don't shoot video. that newly announced olympus is the funniest thing i have seen in quite some time, i am looking forward to the Olympus q4 report... the pentax k1 is the heaviest camera in it's class... that weight is not something everyone wants to carry.

perhaps this is not worth mentioning (like so many of my other totally useless comments), but i suspect that if i could actually manage to physically hold a KP in my hands whilst in a store, i probably have not been able to restrain myself... in all likelihood i would prefer the ergonomics to the K-1 i rented for the week... it was just too damn heavy. not trying to insult anyone, but i am certainly not trying to prove anything either...

here is hoping you all can find it in yourselves to accept the forthcoming top-secret pentax k1000 mirrorless camera into your hearts... you know it is on the way after those numbers!! mwahahaha!

the only difference between uhs-2 and uhs-3 is duplexing and latency--the SD hardware pinout was universal and remained unchanged until uhs-2.

the readers are backwards compatible, throttling newer cards on older devices.

good grief. yes. the nikon end-users are right! back to the SD card!! quickly, while we still have our sd cards!?!

the good people at sony are abandoning the pxw-fs7 ii also... the whole sony professional line is dead because they messed up and used those pesky to understand, perceived to be proprietary until 2017 xqd cards... they are going to have to try to find the drawing board, as unfortunately the only memory they had of it was lost in an xqd crash. the whole venice line is toast too. all poorly designed trash.

it us unfathomable that nikon banked the future of the extremely proud corporation on the cursed, listless xqd format. they must all be drunk on spec sheets, someone is going to light the camera on fire!

...but they are in third place in japan.

maybe i will get around to starting an open-source spreadsheet that displays comprehensive technological progress in the digital camera industry, year over year. spreadsheets give me tremendous pleasure. my agent will kill me when petapixel runs it; "pentaxians make spreadsheet of camera progress"...

the sensors have all basically hit the wall... since 2015 we have been in a 20ish megapixel era. heck, just yesterday sony announced their autofocus on the a9 had finally caught up to the canon 70d... huzzah!

idk, i haven't seen any substantive innovation since the panasonic gh4, or the minolta innovations that are still cutting edge: stabilization, phase-detection autofocus... what has changed since then?

Youtu.be

the autofocus of the minolta maxxum is as good as my pentax k5... (shoutout to excellent film-centric youtuber Azriel Knight for the pudding! probably not his real name?)

sure, maybe video keeps incrementally getting better - but we have the "team" at magic lantern to inculcate the canon gatekeepers with their nightly builds. manufacturers have been preventing progress in video since the Lumiere brothers.

we have pixel shift too... maybe it will come up in the super awesome trade-war? i could go on like this, but really the point is that the tech only changes every 10 years or so. suffice it to say it would also be much more environmentally friendly and customer conscious if a company like nikon or pentax decided to offer substantial upgrades to firmware instead of renovated cameras with debatably similar tech.

the best example of this would be the sordid history of the SD vs XQD card debacle... why would we collectively even want or prefer to use the SD format anymore? it is the inferior format, it isn't future proof, and it has been obsolete when compared to the XQD (cfast) format for years... since before they even went pci-express. if Pentax released the exact same camera as the KP with a single XQD card slot it would be up to them to decide the buffer, not the sd card format... potentially a company such as pentax could release a camera with the intent to develop based on a plebiscite of it's own purchasers!?!

yet we continue to accept mediocrity in the face of superior technological advancements, the only discernable justification for doing so is greed. ironically it has been companies that appear to be doing their customers favors instead of nerfing their purchases who seem to be building a brand lately.

when i decided to discard canon and the $9000 worth of canon proprietary equipment, on that day i promised myself one camera to be all cameras.

so far only the nikon z6 and the Panasonic s1 fit that bill, but i am optimistic for pentax to announce something at cp+... either way i will always keep one pentax digital camera around, even if i have to keep buying them at the end of life to justify their adapter-less deliciousness on my plate...

the sony a7iii is still mighty tempting, even more aftee yesterday's firmware announcement (intervalometer, better af performance); yet i am reluctant... don't know if 100mbps video is going to survive the raw video revolution...

if black magic can do it, pentax can too!!

why didn't i buy one yet? you forget that essentially these new to the segment manufacturers have yet to enter the market... only the sony a9 is really a professional option, the rest is just consumer crapola. yesterday it was nice to see sony buy themselves another year on the a9... although it is unrelated to mirrorless, i wish Pentax had been as smooth with their K1 upgrade PR.

the canon lenses are the only nice glass initially offered, but canon released their baby mirrorless camera. the canon pros won't buy in until the real one comes out.

the opposite thing happened at Nikon--they released a nice camera in the z7, but it has inferior launch lens options.

it is all just getting started, aps-c is next after m4/3... you guys can pretend all you want, but i see the numbers reflecting a trend that pentax cannot afford to ignore... why do you think sony is so willing to rest on their 67% share of the full frame mirrorless market? let the others fail. it works, at least for awhile.

or perhaps they will be underwhelming again. the dslr is over... it is only a matter of time. canon is revamping their aps-c dslr line - down to one camera.

"It's just a dumb K-mount adapter... Sony something something... It's fine for manual focus / manual aperture lenses, but that's all. Nothing to see here..."
-bigmackcam (2019)

as i shoot documentary video when i am not sitting around on my chesterfield writing stuff, i am excited about the potentiality of using my pentax glass on a camera that shoots raw video... beyond excited, in point of fact. who uses autofocus? not me. video people like manual focus. it's kinda a thing.

several months ago i was hopeful that someone at Pentax would release a video-capable mirrorless camera that met my hybrid requirements on the k-mount--or at very least meet me in the middle with something that keeps up with the Jones'... unfortunately instead i got myself an ambivalent stomachache... why won't they do it? if nikon can, why can't pentax?

none of this means i hate Pentax, nor does it mean that i will be using different glass for my work. all it means is that evidently i was the last one holding out--that even leica will be offering better video options in 2019. with Pentax, a clean HDMI out video option is out. the K-1 mark ii is not a viable option for me with it's uncertain bitrate...

if you don't think raw video is a big deal, maybe you should check out this video?

that is not to say that the Huawei p20 pro's 28mm 40 megapixel or the 24 megapixel Leica monochrome lenses don't offer an experience better than most point and shoots - they certainly do - but the 3x tele lens is 10 megapixels of uselessness to me. that, and all of it would be much better with a manual lens attached.

the real interest for a company like pentax with regard to the q would be the open source android UI and a form factor that offered a true a true manual focus experience... yet you could flip it over on the table and watch a real video shot with a pentax prime. no smart phone or touch device will ever give the tactile function of a physical lens... if they had overstock of any of the wider q glass it would be a wise move.
