Sure; people's requirements are different so there can't be a single sweet spot, right? :) I don't expect your optimal choice to be the same as mine. I don't expect my optimal choice to be the same every time I'm out to take photos. Or even in the same day.

However, the K-1's buffer clearing issue is not a format issue.

Maybe. I'm not responsible for some anonymous phrase written some years ago though ;)

And if APS-C reaches a sweet spot, it might be a different one than the FF's.

Nope, FF is here to stay; it reaches a sweet spot of high image quality and affordability. You just cannot buy a medium format camera for the price of a K-1 ;)
It's enough to be "just a preference for the vast majority of customers", don't you think?

To state the obvious, each manufacturer say things that are convenient to them. Sigma, newly launched partnership in the L alliance, would naturally say FF mirrorless is the future. Fujifilm says "we'll never do FF!" (recent DPR interview). Ricoh Imaging believes that DSLRs are here to stay.

Likely they are all right to a certain extent. Or rather, FF mirrorless is the present among other competing formats and technologies; APS-C has and will have its place; and DSLRs are here to stay.
Trouble is, we're educated to look for a single "winner". So, which would kill everything else? :)

I used bold precisely because some are not comfortable with - the KP is not just compulsory NR, it truly offers superior image quality.

I have nothing against a next Pentax using Samsung sensors (I had the K20D after all), nor Samsung processors (a processor upgrade is needed anyway). I'm simply not looking for shortcuts... because there are none. There's only hard, lengthy work.

I've posted a comparison in which the KP had less noise and more detail than the NX500.
Regardless of how they reached this result, this is the standard a future APS-C flagship should reach (and maybe surpass).

ogl, sorry but I don't get your point. Who cares about Samsung? Who cares that it's not a problem for them if the NX is an APS-C only mount, if the NX500 sensor doesn't meet the current quality standards?
This is about Pentax: it would be a problem if they'd use the NX500 sensor (which is at about the K-3's level). So a new, improved Samsung sensor would be required.

OTOH the Samsung rumor might've been false after all.

---------- Post added 22-10-18 at 06:42 PM ----------

Are you sure the KP isn't using an improved sensor, besides the accelerator?

The K-3II makes for a poor baseline. A Sony sensor plus the accelerator might be a much better solution, unless Samsung would come up with an improved sensor.

The K-3 II used the exact same sensor as the K-3 which was launched in 2013.
Look at the comparison I've given: the KP has both less noise and better detail. I don't care about DxOMark's "requirements".

The K-3's sensor is outdated; and an older camera than the NX500. Still, I'm not sure it's worse than the Samsung. Studio shot comparison: Digital Photography Review

Compare with the KP, which is better.

Nikon already had the superior 51-point AF (introduced well before the K-3, and evolved over time); as well as a much superior line of lenses for wildlife. Sure, you had to pay a lot if you wanted their best.

OTOH Pentax started becoming an option (again) with the introduction of the two long lenses, and their first generation advanced AF. My interest in a new APS-C flagship is that it might introduce a second generation advanced AF; I can't wait for the next year to see at least a hint about where things are heading.

I have the utmost respect for the people who manages to get excellent action results with Pentax. I won't blame them if they just decide to leave, but their activity inspires.

Nothing strange - just think of it from today's perspective. Yes, we do have the advantage of thinking in retrospective ;)

Perhaps it made sense for Samsung to design an APS-C mount a decade ago. But now, Pentax has (DSLR) FF; Sony has (mirrorless) FF; Canon has (mirrorless) FF; Nikon has (mirrorless) FF; Leica/Panasonic/Sigma have (mirrorless) FF. And Samsung wasn't a success story in any case.
In retrospective, Canon's decision to make the EOS-M was a mistake - as they needed to launch another (incompatible with the EOS-M) mirrorless mount; Sony's mount is barely FF capable.

Yes, there's the option of intentionally limit themselves into the APS-C-only corner. Hint: you can use a FF-capable mount for APS-C cameras.
The only advantage would be the theoretical ability to make a somewhat smaller cameras or lenses... but then, just compare higher-end Olympus and Fuji with - say - an A7RIII...

Besides:
a. there's no incentive for Pentax to "save" the failed Samsung NX mount. None whatsoever. Zero. Nada. Nil. So why pay Samsung for it?
b. years ago a Pentax official hypothetically described in an interview a mirrorless mount which would have to be large diameter.
c. Pentax' strategy is at this time DSLR centric.

Diameter - barely larger than m4/3's.
I said already, that's an APS-C only mount; and it would not be smart at all to use it instead of a proper FF-capable mount.

There's also nothing to gain from using the NX mount. A new lens line would still be needed, it would be every bit as difficult as if they'd design a new mount. Unless they'd want to make a FF, then it would be impossible.

There is no way Ricoh Imaging would attempt to save Samsung's failed attempt at a mirrorless.
And the NX mount is technically wrong. There is no way Ricoh Imaging would restrict themselves to an APS-C only mount.

Samsung sensor and processor, OTOH...

Chris, you're no longer discussing the issue of APS-C development, but my person. Shame on you.
Of course, you're doing so without taking a good look at yourself, what's motivating you and your endless posts on the same subject.

I don't know what sort of compassion you're expecting me to provide, given that what I'm saying is how Ricoh Imaging is working on an APS-C flagship (and at least a lens), and you're arguing against that.

Hypothetical, because I'm interested in what will happen as opposed to stating my wishes? Because I'm listening to Ricoh Imaging, instead of reinforcing a belief made many months ago?

Even if I've gone FF, it's not a given I wouldn't buy a new APS-C flagship - after all, my 150-450 would work on it. But I find it interesting that you're talking about me having no interest in Pentax APS-C "at all" while forgetting that you decided to go Nikon :p
But if you still didn't, I'd hope you will soon get the information required to make a decision - hopefully a (pre)announcement of a new flagship, though I'm not holding my breath - which we'll only get by listening. Not by speculating.

You can repeat the same as much as you like, I still won't agree - because I have good reasons not to.
And my reasons are from Ricoh Imaging; something you insistently ignore (confirmation bias, eh?). Speaking how an APS-C flagship is necessary, how they're "researching" a K-3 II successor at CP+ 2017 - that wasn't because of how the KP was received: it didn't, or barely started selling at that time. Speaking about how the KP was separate. Preparing a new DA*, thus stepping up the game on the lens side (should I believe they'd do the opposite camera side?).
Between your speculation and what Ricoh Imaging says and does, there isn't even a choice.

And asahiman said "But, DSLRs!".
We're all guessing here, on extremely scarce information. That's why I'd say it's pointless (it could be recreative to some, but for me it fills the forum with noise - while I'm looking for information).

I'm quite wary of this aspect, too - Mr. Arai's command of English is very good, but he still has difficulties (which is perfectly understandable for a Japanese! Not that the Japanese would be any easier for a native English speaker).
In this case, I'm reasonably sure he was talking about the (then) present. "Now", which in his mind was probably "ima" - he'd naturally use an adverb to express the tense.

I've made it clear I'm not speculating on the release date, several times.

"We are now developing" doesn't promise an immediate release, but it is not an unspecified future. The DA* 11-18mm f/2.8 on the roadmap with a planned 2019 release is not an unspecified future. Yes, Pentax is concentrating on the FF but not everything; and there's the medium format, too.
I plan to take things as they come too. As I said, I'm not speculating on the release date because I truly don't know - and guessing doesn't work.

Indeed, this is the Pentax News and Rumors section, not the baseless speculation section.

Imprecise indeed, when we don't even have a link to that Facebook post.
And should I take something like that, against Mr. Arai saying they are developing a successor of the K-3 series?
