K-1 II upgrade program extended in Canada due to unexpectedly high demand

Always good to see when Ricoh is surprised by high demand :)

I think most users see the improvements as far out-weighing the possible pixel-peeper's loss of detail and slightly higher power consumption (I believe those are the cons some complain about?).

The reason I won't upgrade is simply that the K-1 already does what I need - and then some. Sending away my precious for improvements I don't need at the cost of 500 doesn't really make sense to me.

Guns are not (necessarily) expensive. Ammo can be. Loading your own helps. But yeah, plenty of opportunities for target practice, no worries.

Oh, and we do have bacon and cheese both, as well as beer, so all basic needs should be covered.

All that glitters is not gold :D

Today's "Daily in September" shot. Pretty close up with the DFA 100 WR.

That it'll deprive you of all sense and senses? Nope, that's not a guess. That's hard earned, ummm... wisdom

But luckily there was no lake with thin ice nearby at the time :D

Yes, a shot like this is pure luck, surely! ;)

No, it's a lovely composition with lots of depth. It's notoriously hard to do these narrow fjords justice on a two-dimensional medium. Very well done!

 I guess it makes sense with just one pilot. If you lose a chopper you lose just one pilot instead of two... Besides, the Sea Kings were made in the early 60ies, weren't they? They didn't break in a hurry. Or don't - we still fly them here. And in Canada, I believe.

I can do well without those winds. But it's an utterly beautiful part of the country. At least in summer it is. In winter I guess it's more exotic than beautiful :D

Oh, and in summer the sea temperature can easily go up to about 12C.

What's this talk of hypothermia and drowning? I'd pay to go on a ride like that in those parts! :D

To see really low temperatures in Norway you have to go further inland - just like with Minnesota, I guess. It rarely gets very cold along the coast, maybe down to -20C or thereabouts at most. Further in it can easily dip below -40, or even -50 up north.

True. The lake isn't even entirely frozen over, and no frost mist. So not really cold.

If it were cold it would look more like this (image stolen from the Intarwebs).

Nah, depends on what you've got. Some kinds are ok, others not (like anything full auto), but unless you're active at the range (participating in some competitions) or hunting you'll be allowed to have just a handful (3 or 4, I think). The rules differ from country to country, but lots of people hunt in the Nordics.

Nah, it's not that cold here. Some (like me) struggle with the darkness, though. Sunrise at 10am and sunset at 3pm is not my kind of fun. Or up north, sunset in November, sunrise in January :(

But there are good things, too. Like 5 weeks of paid vacation :)

Damn right - there's nothing worse than man flu. Nothing. Maybe having both legs crushed in a stone grinder comes close, but not very close.

Hot drinks and whisky, that's the only known remedy. Well, maybe bourbon will work on yous guys over there. Could be combined in an Irish coffee, of course. And then another one. If a little helps a bit, a big one helps more. Here, have another one!

Just get well, ok?

Thanks! I see that some even think the Mantella madagascariensis to be several cryptic species as well. I guess a barcoding project might help clear up that issue. Not that I know anything about genetics.

How far are you willing to move? I don't know the business at all, but wouldn't be surprised if someone this side of the pond would be interested in your experience, be it Cummins or other makers or dealers.

Is that what you guys over there call "throwing a curve ball"? :D

However that may be, good luck to you!

Irix 15mm or 10-17mm?

From what I see the Irix performs very, very well on the K-1. I have no personal experience, though.

It covers FF perfectly well from 15 to 17mm, has a slight vignette at 14mm - and needs severe cropping by the time you reach 10mm. But still, 15mm fisheye is seriously wide on FF.

On APS-C it is definitely a winner. It's so tiny that there's never a reason not to bring it. Wonderful contrast and flare resistance. A gem of a lens.

On the K-1 it requires quite a bit of cropping. You can get a bit more than APS-C size out of it, but not nearly the full frame of the K-1. Shooting in 1:1 crop can work reasonably well, I think, but I still prefer other lenses for wide work on the K-1. (My compact alternative for ultra-wide on FF is the old A20/2.8.)

So, even though I have never used the Irix, I know I will not give up the 10-17. It's very wide for being so compact and light.

I spy yet another amphibian.

This tiny guy was on the forest floor in Andasibe, Madagascar. I suspect it would be unhealthy to eat him...
