Lens roadmap: Tanaka-san spills the beans

Thanks Mistral75.

Waiting 2+ more years for a 16-50 replacement is hard to swallow. I was personally hoping for that sooner but recognize that FF lenses are the priority.

They're in a tough spot trying to address many diverse needs in a shrinking market with little to no investment.

Pentax needs a new sugar-daddy. Tamron, Sigma, the Chinese??

We're all familiar with Pentax's challenges but let's put that aside.

People will nitpick the choices in the lineups but it kind of shows the challenge for Olympus.
You can get many APS-C setups for the same price as an Olympus setup without much of a size/weight penalty.
So they are squeezed from above and then squeezed from below by cell phones.

Because the K-3ii was no longer selling in sufficient quantities and at sufficient margin to justify manufacturing any further batches.

The APS-C DSLR market is rapidly shrinking. It will become a very tiny percentage of the overall ILC market in 2 to 3 years.
The days of selling 100's of thousands of K-5 and K-3 models are gone. I doubt a K-3 successor type camera would shift even 50,000 units.

I think Ricoh already saw this coming and decided to focus on full-frame where the action is and that's why we didn't get a K-3iii first time around.
They probably should have beefed up the specs on KP and stuck with that as the APS-C flagship. A lot of people won't like that but it is hard to argue with the market.

Views on DA 20-40 Ltd in comparison to DA35 F2.4

As always a lot will depend on the type of photography you want to do.

I have the DA15, DA21, DA40, DA35/2.4, DA 20-40 among others.

I would say get the 20-40 as foundation for a 2 or 3 lens compact kit.
It's lightweight, WR, has silent DC autofocusing, handles like a prime and you are not really making any compromises in image quality versus the primes.

The 20-40 has slightly better IQ at 20mm in my opinion and is faster (2.8) than the 21 prime . At 40mm it is roughly equivalent to the DA40 prime but one stop slower.

The 15, 20-40, 70 makes a great compact three lens kit for portraits, landscapes, and general photography.
The 20-40 and 55-300WR gives you a fully weather sealed lightweight 2 lens kit if you need more reach.

Given Pentax's market share and glacial product pipeline, there is zero chance of a new MILC mount.

However the K-mount already supports both full-frame and APS-C and there are millions of lenses out there already.
A K-mount MILC makes a lot of sense at some point down the road. Yes the flange distance is longer than the new mounts from the competition, but who really cares.

MILC cameras are getting bigger and bigger every generation to the point where they are as big as DSLRs now anyway.

A lightweight MILC WR full-framed IBIS K-mount camera at a $1500 price point could get a lot of attention.

While they are at it open-source the K-mount to anyone who wants to make lenses for it.

And get a new generation of marketing people in. Print media marketing and invisible ambassadors are so last century.

Ricoh/Pentax actually has a lot going for it. They are already in the full-frame space unlike Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic (in, but huge mountain to climb for them)

My original Q doesn't seem to support that. My later Q-S1 does. Not sure about the Q-10 and Q-7.

I don't personally find it that cluttered. It is really just the exposure basics, metering mode and battery. Kind of essential when shooting this camera.

It's a nice cityscape. There's not a lot of interest in the water and the sky, both of which occupy quite a bit of the composition. I would be tempted to do more of a panoramic crop.

Will Canon and Nikon Ditch Crop-Sensor Cameras?

I think it is a real possibility for Nikon in the next 2-3 years except for the D500, which may get a successor.

Canon will be last man standing in the shrinking soccer-mom DSLR space, but I think they will push that group towards the M range of cameras. That leaves the 7D range which may hang on.

The crop DSLR space will get very small which makes you wonder where Pentax will go.

It's f/5.6 at 11mm. Looks like a little field curvature and distortion. To be expected with a lens like this.

At f/8- f/11 with proper focusing I would expect that scene to be edge to edge sharp but still have distortion (to be corrected in camera or in post)

Focusing at hyperfocal with lenses that have field curvature is asking for weak edges.

Have to focus further into the scene. Or focus at the edges (manual focus with punch zoom) then check the center is still sharp, if not adjust to get even sharpness across the frame.

Pretty much agree with all of this.

The 16-50 is the one most badly in need of an update. Every copy I have seen is de-centered to some extent, purple fringing and unusable wide open for my purposes. I can't imagine they are selling many at this point.
It is the only WR fast normal zoom available on the K-mount. I think they could sell a lot of these if they updated it.

Slightly disagree on the DA55. Get the DFA*50 if you need better wide-open performance. I would settle for faster AF motor on this and call it done.

50-135, 60-250, 200, 300. I would settle for upgraded coatings and new fast AF motors.

The DA limited's. The jewel in the crown IMO and one of the last unique selling points of Pentax. Need stronger marketing around these.

20-40. Yes runway field curvature at 40mm, but it is possible to master it for landscapes with experimentation and practice. It may have been designed specifically this way for OOF rendering at the long end for portraits and objects. I'm happy to take the trade off. This is possibly my favorite lens. Stunningly beautiful rendering. Wouldn't change anything on it.

The needs of customers can change, the market changes. Ricoh Imaging don't seem to understand they are in the consumer electronics business.
They need to move quickly on their feet, adapt. If they have plans they need to execute them over a reasonable timescale.

They're not going to be one of the big boys, that's clear. The bean counters have clearly cut the product development pipeline to the bone.
In the short-term they probably need to identify some niches to exploit in a shrinking market and just focus on them.

Or figure out some low-cost product upgrades to do to give people a reason to open their wallets.

This.

The DA20-40 Limited is currently below $500 and is another option. It has the beautiful Limited rendering and gives you 20mm wide angle at f/2.8. Good for street shooting.
It is f/4 at 40mm though, so not great subject separation. But you have that covered with your fast 50's and 135's.

maybe, but why not just say that? Do you or Dewman have direct knowledge of these repairs? If so can you share it?

It would be good to clear this up for anyone interested in this service.

If you're talking about PC35 Photolab in California then this is what they say on their own web-site:

"This repair includes a modification of the aperture control block in order for it to function properly. We believe this should be a permanent fix of the aperture control block and we will guarantee proper aperture function for one year. If the aperture block fails again, return the camera to us and we will repair it again. You'll only pay return shipping. Having your aperture control block replaced by Pentax may not guarantee it won't fail again. This part appears to fail over time and use. It is likely a quality control problem, meaning some aperture controls will function indefinitely while others will fail. We believe our solution is better because it is a permanent fix and at around half the cost of having Pentax replace the control block"

So they seem to say it is a modification not a replacement.

Pretty sure it was web-site glitch. Disappointing for those who ordered. Stuff happens.

But I will say the camera and bag/strap bundle at $697 is still a smoking deal and you will feel a lot better when you get your hands on the KP :)
