Nature Fall colors along the Gunella Pass Road

It is a tricky business balancing the bright yellow with the dark evergreens without blowing out one end. The polarizer does help with the colors though at high altitudes (these were all above 8000') it doesn't take much for the sky to turn almost black.

I took these along Guanella Pass last week. I used a Cokin circular polarizer on most of these. Comments are always welcome.

I have been quite happy with Panorama Maker. It is an easy program to use and gives good results.

I stitched together 3 shots using ArcSoft's Panorama Maker 5 to get this image of the Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona. It gives you some idea of the size of the hole made by a rock somewhere between 10 and 30 meters across.

I will be heading to Arizona in two weeks for a NASA symposium and we will be going to some of the areas where they have tested the Curiosity rover, which coincidentally happen to be places I like to visit: the Meteor Crater, the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory and the Sunset Crater Volcanic Field. I have to carry everything myself and it has to fit in the van along with everyone else's stuff so space is at a premium.

Here is what goes with me:
Pentax K20D with battery grip and 2 SanDisk 8GB SD cards
Sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4.5
Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6
Pentax DA 55-300mm 4-5.6
Cokin filter holder and rings along with a circular polarizer and several ND filters
AF540FGz + some extra AA batteries for it
Promaster Monopod
Hahnel charger that can charge both batteries at once

I had contemplated shooting jpeg when i go on vacation in July so that I could use my iPad to label and keyword the files rather than carrying along my MacBook. I've decided to carry the MacBook with me.

I will be going to my school's graduation ceremony tomorrow morning and, if past years are a guide, there will be many kids where the only record of their graduation will be the images from someone's phone. For many people cell phone photos are "good enough" and that's all a lot of people demand.

i have carried my K20 (and the K10 before that and the *ist DL before that and a ZX-L before that) for many, many miles without incident. i do, however, carry them on the tank (not enough room) but instead strap my bag to the passenger seat. I have been on the road to Chaco Canyon so I can say with authority that a rough road did not damage anything. I was extra diligent about blowing out dust after that particular trip.

There were some good deals to be had, and lots of stuff still there on Saturday afternoon. I got a 55-300mm for $182 and an AF540FGz for $189 and was tempted by a Kr kit for $225. It is nice to have a local place again where Pentax stuff can be seen and handled. They even had several 645D that one could hold and fantasize over. The sale goes on until 6 today (the 2nd) so if you are local if would definitely go by.

Nice use of depth of field on these. I have trouble taking photos of our cats; I soon as I think I have everything set they wander over to see what I am doing.

I usually use shutter speeds of 1 to 3 seconds for the fireworks and adjust the black point in Aperture. Fireworks are one subject I never really tried with film but enjoy capturing digitally.

For the first time in several years there is a place in Colorado (home to Pentax USA) where you can actually see the cameras. Denver Pro Photo has K-01, K30 and K5 in stock as well as a few lenses. It's a start.

Some more fun with brightly colored vegetables at the Farmer's Market. I was drawn in by the one green one in the midst of all the red ones.

I took these at the Broomfield Farmer's Market which is hosted by the Church of the Holy Comforter. I've never taken food photos like these but I really liked the colors and the shapes.

You were fortunate to have a spot where there was something visible on the ground. Without that fireworks tend to just be abstract color compositions. My best ones were from last year when I saw then shot off over the Atlantic in Flagler Beach FL.

Most cities along the Front Range, for very good reasons, cancelled their fireworks this year. Broomfield and a few other places had safe enough places to shoot them off and did so. These were taken from about 1/2 mile away with apertures ranging from f/4.5 to f/8. The images were cropped and the black point was adjusted in Aperture 3.3.

I would definitely not miss Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls. If you have to choose between Norris and West Thumb thermal areas, and it sound like you will, I would go with the West Thumb.

I took my photos of the eclipse using a solar filter over the end of my Pentax 300mm. I had the camera on a tripod so that I could shoot at ISO 100 and then cropped the images as needed afterward. The key with a solar filter is that it reflects a very large fraction of the light, including UV and IR. An ND filter will let through more IR which can heat up your optics.

Most of my eclipse photos were taken through a solar filter and are thus just the Sun against a black background. As the Sun set it was possible to take some shots without the filter. This was taken from the South Aircraft Viewing Area just outside the fence of the Albuquerque airport. I think that is Mt Taylor on the horizon.

I took this at the end of March when I was in San Diego on my Spring Break. It is just one exposure; I tried some HDR shots but the heavy surf made for way too many ghosts. Comments and critiques are welcomed.
