Are we really THAT rare?

I liked the K-X at the time I think a good camera as it was a well featured model in most ways v rivals. I like it until I saw my images at some shutter speeds with shutter induced blur with SR on.

Pentax have had a patchy run with QC on some bodies I don't think that has helped them much
K-r and K5 also had problems with AF, the only reason I stayed with Pentax is I have a fondness for some of their lenses if it were on QC I'd have gone long ago

I see nothing wrong with a 16-85mm and the speed is in line with the Nikkor equivalent. Subject to "decent optics and reasonable price" it's not a bad offering to have. There are of course other lenses I'd like to see but I don't mind something like this arriving. It's at least "sensible" unlike the oddball not fast or wide enough or long enough DA 20-40mm. All lenses are compromises you're not going to get a fast 16-85mm but the 16mm is what people are after and...they want something long enough too it's not a bad lens to have for a general purpose lens. It's not going to replace a 17-50mm f2.8 obviously, on the other hand if you have an 18-135mm I can't see you needing all 3 lenses. I'd wager the optics will stomp the 18-135mm though with ease

What Should Pentax Do?

The first full frame Sony was the A900, that was out in 2008, erm where was Pentax? I'd have expected a full frame body at the most 2 years ago. I'm not really sure where Sony are going with E mount, though they do lack lenses they have adapters for A mount and other maker out there.

Good times are over for everyone why should we expect Pentax to invest in FF when they're not exactly flushed with cash anyway
In some places you can't even find Pentax products on display to buy, I don't think they have the distribution network to pull it off

And this helps how?
Let me see

1: Canon
2: Nikon
3: Sony
4: Pentax

So you tell me what's going right and what's going wrong cos from where I'm standing it's not really working
I like Pentax we all do, but you can't really ignore the face they're fourth in a four horse race, and that's despite Sony's mixed direction in the market

If Pentax do a FF what price entry FF mid or high? Will one body cut it? If it's too expensive it's a niche product (few will buy into it merely to please some current users) if it's cheap enough then maybe..but then Canikon have budget FF bodies and I just can't see how Pentax can hope to compete on ANY level lenses, flash system (sore point but valid) I'm not seeing it

Ok folks keep telling yourself that it's not going to work..most of the limited primes are slow for their cost (FF users want FAST glass) well some of them do
There are quite a few lenses you'd need 24-70mm f2.8/f4, 24-105mm, 70-200mm f2.8/f4, UWA FF zoom, 28-something more affordable FF normal range zoom. 24 and 28mm primes also needed, 85mm is the standard portrait focal length for FF. Really I can't see RIcoh's cheque book managing that lot

Not going to happen most people find the Pentax lens range erm..well limited (not just the name but what's on offer) hard facts are nobody (and this includes Sony) are going to touch Canikon in the FF market..so really it would be no more than a token effort. As for Sony's E mount the prices alone would scare more people off I'd wager those that have bought one are buying not a lot of Sony glass (adapters and using other lenses)

I'm not being on a downer just realistic the window for "half serious FF challenge" shut a few years back Pentax could have done a FF body but didn't the game is well underway and I think it's really just to please a few shooters out there it would have next to no impact on the top 2 makers.

You'll need a lot more than that esp zoom lenses FF won't work for Pentax they're not even doing that well with APS-C which is shame but the rot set in years ago Hoya priced them off the market (lenses) and it's just too late IMO to make a big push. Ricoh are a bit of a mixed bag too just not enough development esp with "lenses people want to buy"

It's too late for full frame boat has sailed ages ago and they don't have enough FF lenses. Only reason Sony did it was probably because they make the sensors and they had some full frame lens designs from MInolta. I can't see it working for Pentax "unless" they can do something at a very appealing price point

I'm not talking about "in camera gimmicks or effects" that's not "bling" appearances matter and that's the key issue the design is not something that will sit with most buyers very well

Nikon might do a paint job on a few entry models but they don't mix up the controls or put flashy LED's in cameras

So is 16 megapixel enough?

16mp allows for fairly aggressive cropping honestly there isn't a big different between it and 24mp really quite minor overall, not nearly as big a jump as moving from 6mp to 12mp, the more pixels you have to start with the less advantage there is. If files sizes are an issue I'd suggest converting to lossy DNG this gives much small files sizes but the flexibility of raw processing I've tried it extensively and it's near as damn it identical to normal raw files (even pulling them around a lot) a good alternative to jpeg shooting

16mp is enough, but then again 12mp was mostly enough anyway..and if you didn't crop much 6/8mp images give excellent enlargements

I think you've missed the point
Canon's entry models might not be that interesting but they are pretty cheap and drag people into the "net" as such and with a big system on offer the ones that do move up to more expensive bodies or buying lenses and other bits they're much more likely to get them to buy further into the Canon system it's worked wonders for them for the last 10 years, the potential money making from this is pretty big not everyone just goes out first go to bag a 5dMkIII and a ton of L lenses. Thus the entry market is important for all makers

Looking back it's never worked doing oddball designs, Pentax tried the K-01 (epic fail) They had the "transformer styled" K-30 which again didn't do anything for the brand. Olympus has done strange designs in the past too (with the same result) Sony made a specific "girlie type" entry DSLR years ago (A230 in a variety of colours etc but clearly aimed at females mostly) and it did worse than their A200 (normal looking DSLR) by a big margin

In short it doesn't work full stop. When you "bling up" a camera like this it instantly puts off quite a few buyers, and it's not a sexist thing I'd wager over 50% of camera buyers (at least DSLR buyers) are male probably quite a bit over that number. The moment you start making a camera with "girlie/bling" overtones or styling you're asking for trouble that's why Canikon don't mess about here at all (sure Nikon do some coloured versions of their entry models but that's it nothing oddball about it) if it worked Canikon would do it

There are other considerations from an ergonomics points of view the K-S1 doesn't look convincing to me, maybe it's not as bad in the hand but that's another point to make and it's a serious one. Lastly the launch price is far from super budget either so really it's not we want to dance on the grave of a just released camera, rather it's just a slow moving train crash with no hope of avoiding the obvious.

You don't have to be an expert in marketing to see how the industry works

Not really the moment someone says it's "cute" means you've lost over half your potential buyers straight away (ie male)
It doesn't work never has and never will bling esp does not work on cameras and the LED's are a gimmick but no half serious shooter would be seen dead with that...

Camera makers have tried oddball designs over the years (Olympus another one who did this) it mostly fails and they go back to more traditional designs oddball is dangerous and alienates many buyers it's a camera they don't look that exciting and never will. The only maker who could get away with a minimal odd design is Apple, that's about it though

Over the years I've gone past this "brand loyalty thing" I honestly think most of us know that in 100 years time anyone looking at our photos isn't going to give a hoot what camera or lens or how many pixels you had. We all fall for it..whatever happens to any of the makers so long as I can take photos I don't really care that much.

I do hope Pentax carry on, they have some genuinely good ideas and thinking offering something different. If not then that's life we move on

No real room for Pentax, Canon, NIkon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus lots of bridge models
You can even buy the X-S1 for a steal right now (it's flawed but surprisingly good) RX10 is too expensive

I don't see how Pentax can compete here, unless they really did something special

I Agree, larger sensors would revive the compact market (too many years with the same old boring tiny sensors) this would allow them to seriously attack smart phones (they can't compete on sensor size)
As for Ricoh, whilst I'd love to remain upbeat, the reality is that they are fourth in a four horse race.

I just honestly think it's too late in the day for a big push, and that the market will be tough over the next few years.
We could blame Hoya for not moving things forward enough, just think the time has run out.

It's unlikely Pentax support lied, but hey knock yourself out.
I remember the same think with the K-5 rampant denial of the problem, but when the K-5II came out the first thing they checked for was front focus in low kelvin light.
Only live view contrast AF is reliable enough to use in Tungsten lighting on the K-r, and most people agree it was a problem that Pentax ignored

The K-x didn't suffer from this problem

You won't unless you shoot in tungsten light!
I'm not sure why it's denied if Pentax Europe Support admit the problem then it's a fact
There was never a fix, there was no modification all K-r's have the problem

But it only shows at specific light sources ie t tungsten

DxOMark tests the DA 20-40

I trust lenstip most of the time their findings are usually in line with my real world shooting. DxO well numbers mean little to me, I like real world images to see what's going on.
It is possible to get sample variation no doubts there. It will be interesting to see more reviews of this lens, so far I'm not convinced with what I've seen

I think being blunt it's not the lens for most people, not just me
I suspect many users will have migrated from the 18-55m kit lens, probably to a 16-50mm f2.8, either the Tamron/Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 or even the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-f4
In most cases I can't see a place in the bag for a 20-40mm it seemingly came out of nowhere, and nobody was asking for it. Hence my comments on being a strange choice from Pentax

I'm not entirely convinced limited zooms are wanted by most Pentax users.

The rendering is fine on the Tamron it's neither poor nor amazing. If you want amazing then just buy the Tamron 90mm f2.8 one of the bokeh kings and well respected
You will certainly have the ability to take better portraits with the 90mm at f2.8 than you will at 40mm f4.

And sealing the deal you can buy both for about the same cost of the Pentax 20-40mm lens, and you get a 1:1 macro too, bit of a no brainer really
20mm just isn't wide enough and I'm really surprised Pentax picked such a range

AF performance should be looked at on a body to body basis, I had a K-x and it was ok for focus, but it has very large AF points making critical focus somewhat harder at times

I've used 3
I had to replace one was a bit off, the other 2 were fine though

Like all lenses QC can play a part, so it's not a shock that there is some variation.
But certainly on the good ones f2.8 is great even at 50mm just fine and sharp mostly across to the edges just a very tiny fall off extreme corners, f4 clears that up but for most purposes few would notice unless you take brick wall shots, even then I've never had an issue in real world use. At the wide end of course you would tend to stop down for landscape shots (but watch out for that focal plane distortion) Decentering can be an issue on any lens, but it's quite easy to spot that problem when one side is notably softer than the other, few lenses are absolutely perfect, but you should know if there is something wrong fairly quickly.

In some cases AF issues can be a problem too, hence complaints about xyz lens not sharp at xyz focal length. Simple way to test that is use live view

I'll wait until more review for the Pentax turn up, then we can see what the story is with other samples. But it goes without saying you would expect tighter QC on more expensive lenses

You must have a ho hum copy of the Tamron, the lens is very sharp only very slight corner softness (extreme corners) across the entire range it's a stunning lens and nothing from the Pentax samples I've seen comes close to it.

Stop it down to f4 and it's stupid sharp across the entire range corners are tack.
It's even good wide open tele end, I would not hesitate to use it wide open at all focal lengths, that's how good a decent copy is
There is some field curvature at the wide end, but I have to say 20mm is a lot less useful than 17mm, that alone rules the Pentax out for me

I see Nikon users saying the same about the new 58mm f1.4 ie lovely rendering, but most users will consider the lens overpriced for what you get
There are plenty of nice rendering lenses that cost a lot less than either the Pentax or the Nikkor

Paul has a point, optics wise it's performance is more kit lens like than pro grade zoom lens. Whatever way you cut it if the review samples are a fair reflection on most copies it's very strange because to design a good lens with such a short range isn't exactly that hard for any lens designer. There is little point beating on about how nicely it's made if the performance isn't reflective of the price paid.

For the money nothing short of stellar is acceptable for such a lens.
