totally agree - you frame a pcture with what you've got, not what you might have had and, as you say, it's only really an issue at close focus where your movements toward and away from the object can compensate easily in most cases

Like a lot of others, I haven't stopped using APS-C, but I now use it for telephoto reach and macro - but I jumped at the K-1 becaue I grew up with 35mm, and the format just feels natural (though I must admit, in my later film days, I used 120 film in the 67 and used 35mmfor telephoto and macro :) )

I think that's the idea, isn't it? The people who use it want to pick it up and have their fingers know where everything is immediately. OTOH, it does make it more difficult to integrate new feaures - be interesting to see what they've come up with :)

What are your DSLR dealbreakers?

The thread is about DSLRs specifically, so some things like OVF are taken for granted, and other things like AF are taken for granted because all DSLRs have them, but beyond that, weather sealing is the biggie for me, and an articulating screen is definitely preferable, though I never missed it when I didn't have it - but I'm so used to Pentax that I don't know what I would dislike on other brands, - overall, it's difficult to say because Pentax is what I'm used to, and they think cameras out carefully so that the features are coherent and not just thrown in because they can or excluded to push you to a more expensive model.

I trust, with a moderator already prowling around this thread, that this will be seen as sociological, not political :), but it's a strange fact that the more we are encouraged towards diversity in the social sphere, the less accepting of it we seem to be in other people's buyng choices. In the photographic realm, there is what sometimes feels like an active attempt to nail down the coffin lid on still living brands, especially the smaller ones, that aren't Sony out on YouTube. Fuji gets some love, but the old DSLR makers are not the flavour of the month, even when they produce mirrorless cameras - and Pentax don't (yet?).

This all makes PF even more important.

Please, sir, it was me :) - I did start one such thread a couple of years ago, but a new one will certainly get more enthusiam than an old one, and things change, so this is well warranted :)

At the moment, I'd say Sean Tucker is the guy I watch most :)

In truth I never bought or read any of his ebooks, but the passing of any warrior in the cause of Pentax is a sad thing, and one who has contributed so much especially sad. My sincere condolences to his loved ones, may he rest in peace, his good work done.

In a word, yes - it wasn't my editing decision at the time, when I favoured the drama that I experienced in the field, but if I were editing purely pictorially, it might come out different. One further point - what you see and hat I see might not be the same, based on screen calibration (or lack of it in my case) - but that's an unknown :)

Yes, there's good prominence for the brands under the Ricoh umbrella - suggests that the GR is dong quite well, given a lot of space for one camera -what about the Ricoh branded compacts, I wonder? maybe the other sideof the booth?

Have you experienced pressure to switch systems?

I'm sure everyone, whatever brand they use, has to put up with trollery, good natured or otherwise, regarding their choice of equipment, but it's a bit like a predator running at a herd to spot the slowest or weakest individuals - if you know why you use your brand, and it's a good reason, you don't have to feel belittled or apologetic or pressured in any way. It's just a question of being sure in yourself and knowing why you're sure, then you're not vulnerable to the doubt that people try to place in your mind.

Which isn't to say that you close your ears to the good points of others systems - you must also be readty to change if that makes sense, However, people invest a lot in their equipment, so trying to get you to change can be a way of validating their own decisions and, dare I say, insecurities about those decisions, and has nothing to do with what's best for you,..

The most common comments about Pentax are relating to not knowing the brand still existed or jokes aboit how few Pentax users there are - neither of which is a reason to change in itself, but it can make some people feel that they are in a vulnerable minority. If you know why you use Pentax, of course, it can make you think that's good - you have advantages that fewer people share :)

Why Bulb on modern cameras

One thing I realy like on the extended bulb mode is that, in daytime exposures at least, you can still see the scene clearly in live view even with a 10 stop ND filter if you just dial up the time far enough - it's a useful way of checking our exposure as well as last minute composition.

Apologies if this has been said, but I would have thought, in view of lack of certainty expessed concerning coatings, that HD designation clearly signified Ricoh proprietary coatings rather than any old Tamron coating - or am I being naive?

This is a fairly well known aveniue of old beech trees (sadly nearing the end of their lives, increasing gaps appearing as they are chopped down for safety reasons). Terrible thought that it's over ten years ago that I did a sort of project on them, visiting in all sorts of weathers, but I was recently just driving through with a camera on board and the winter mutedness apealed to me,

The funny thing is seeing all brand supporters rushing to claim that that brand's lenses aren't perfect :)

We know Pentax has always favoured characteristics tthat aren't alwyays appteciated in reviews, but that's what makes the images stand out, and in a good way.

It's true too that the Canon and Nikon own make 70-200/4 lenses are regularly used without a tripod collar even if one is available (which I'm not sure about). Admittedly the L-series Canon is a fair bit lighter, but this one is comparable to the Nikon in weight.
