Painted Lens Hoods: Open Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Krypton flat black spray can for plastic.

I would mask off the bayonet area that directly makes contact on the lens when mounting the hood.

I have a JJC hood for the 06 and have gradually collected original Pentax hoods for the 01, 02 and 08. The notable difference is my JJC hoodís inner surface has no coating of flat black. Could easily fix that with a few blasts from a suitable spray paint can.

The JJC hood may be fine with the smaller sensor original Q and Q10 but I suppose the vignette comes in on the latter released larger sensor Q7 and Q-S1. I was in Osaka and then Tokyo just last week and picked up an original Pentax branded petal hood for the 02 lens but not mounted it yet.

Can the shutter still fire? How about the ND? Does the camera still recognize the 06 lens has been mounted and mark it in the Xif data?

I want to use the parts to make a dumb adaptor into a smarter one. If you can help.

Fish-Eye Options for the Q

The store I bought it from mislabeled the Fujinon 1.4mm F1.8 as a CS, Fujinon 1.4mm f/1.8 Fisheye lens CS Mount DF1.4HB-L1 - Ideal for All Sky Camera but to my delight itís actually a C mount lens! Simply mounted it with the same inexpensive one piece C to PQ adaptor as I already used for my Funjinon 2.7mm F1.8. I can even employ the same rubber O-ring as a variable thickness shim for re-focusing from zero to infinity! Outwardly the dimensions match the 2.7mm F1.8. Without the labels, you could not tell them apart. The sturdy plastic lens cap came as a bonus that fits my 2.7mm F1.8 lens too! I wish I had spare. The accompanying simple rear cap is nothing to write home about but appreciated still.

Confirmed my suspicions that itís a full circular fisheye image on a Q-S1 (what I wanted), and a gives a cropped-circle image when pairing with my original Q. How much crop off the top and or bottom varies depending on the stabilization compensation and your C to PQ adaptorís alignment.

Resolution I consider is still on par with the 5 MP 2.7mm F1.8. It also exhibits similar purple fringes in very high contrast situations but I am able to rein them in with a few sweeps of a finger via Snapseed, the sample below was cleaned up this way.

Field of view is certainly more than the 180,
I am not sure how to measure how wide exactly but I guess 190 or more.

If you want a fast fisheye that fills the frame on either the smaller or larger sensor Qís without a black circle, the 2.7mm F1.8 is great.
If you are after the extreme look of a full circle super fisheye for the Q7 or Q-S1, this is a neat and perhaps at this moment, even unique proposition. £65 inclusive of postage within the UK, is not outrageous IMO.

Took a leap of faith and bought this CS lens and should be in my hands soon.

Will need some time and thought to DIY rig this very front-heavy looking CS lens to Q mount. May be a challenge.

Predict it will be near, if not fully circle fisheye on a Q-S1.

Report back my findings when ready.

A USB powered charger with bonus feature LCD display indicating to you the progression of how much the battery is charged is nice.

Happy travels! Can you drop us a review after you come back regards how well it works for you.

Pentax Q for astrophotography beginner?

A Samsung NX mini would mean investment in another system though. I hope a small cut filter dropped onto the Q sensor housing secured with tape will allow full spectrum IR auto focus on my existing PQ lenses.

Now where do I get an inexpensive collection of various wavelength small cut IR filters from?

The photo of the Q sensor with the IR filter removed is very informative as is the drawings you made. Much appreciated! Do you need to lay a replacement pane of glass where the Ir cut filter was to regain infinity focus with PQ lenses for daytime IR photography? Or is it not an issue for you as manual focusing is possible on lenses or telescopes you use that twist beyond the usual infinity?

Encouraging and now looking for another Q for IR modding. Knowing now that cutting the plastic shroud for the sensor is sufficient, a very simple procedure vs many other cameras IR filter removals. (Thank heavens your process does not involve actual broken glass).

Thanks again for sharing. I think this opens the door for many Q owners on this forum to mod their Qís, though market for 2nd hand Qís are going to become more rare as a result.

What's the best wifi SD card for use with the Q7?

I have along neglected eye-fi X2 connect card that I wanted to resurrect just now. Trouble is, it needs online services to ďregisterĒ it again (at some point I must have done a clean format of the card on my PC). Those online services are now defunct, so Iím pretty much stuffed getting any of the WiFi functionality back. The eye-fi setup rigmarole was never fun when it was new. My advice is to steer clear of buying any new-old stock of eye-fi.

Still works as an plain SD card though...

Careful not to accidentally flip the lens over. A person contacted me about infinity focus not working for their 07, it was because they removed the element entirely and had inadvertently mixed up the lens orientation when reinserted into the body housing.

Seems to make a difference.

Soratama for Pentax Q

Hi, I love your Soratama examples!
I used the following components:

2 piece C-Mount to Pentax Q adaptor
1mm C-Mount shim (acts as a macro ring for closer minimum focusing)
C-Mount Cosmicar/Pentax 8.5mm f1.5
40.5mm to 37mm step down ring
37mm variable ND deglazed
37mm to 52mm step up ring
52mm Soratama

Still a work in progress for my ideal setup.

Does this work with the Q pop-up as an optical slave and operate the PTTL at the same time?
If yes I guess this would be pretty perfect off camera for the Q. Not badly priced either.

This was taken when I first bought the 72mm. The 02 lens was at 15mm. The bigger Soratama is readily available, more flexible and better value IMO as you can also use it even on larger sensor cameras and larger lenses with less chance of the vignetting filter rim showing up in frame. I have tried this 72mm on Canon And Sony APSC cameras and also Olympus MFT. Of course it works also with the Q/QS1 too if you donít mind the size. The smaller 52mm wonít be as versatile.

How is the Holga lens vs the 07 Shield lens?

I have the Holga 10mm lens for Pentax Q. Actually more like 14mm focal length by my estimation. Low contrast and very soft vs the Pentax 07. I have the pinhole Holga lens too which I dislike a lot as the images are so extremely fuzzy.

None of the PQ mount Holga lenses are expensive at the moment so no great loss.

In the end I am much happier with the images rendered (including the blurry edges) from the 07. Wins also by being physically much smaller and hence more pocketable than the Holga lenses too.

Do share with us what you make of it once you have had a play with your Holga lens on your Q.
