It looks like you could use some post-processing.

Tonight, because I had the time, I took my 500mm Tamron Adaptall-2 55BB, attached the 1.4X TC, and then attached that to a 2x Sigma TC.

Results attached, but not as bad as I thought.

Things Learned in My First Year

I've been taking pictures for a little over a year now. I acquired my K-3 in January of last year, with a 50-200 f/4-5.6 lens. Naturally, I succumbed to LBA, and acquired (and dis-acquired and acquired) various lenses and other gear. After a year, and reflecting a bit, here is my sage (13 month!) top-ten advice for beginners:

1. That lens on eBay (Goodwill, Craiglist, Facebook) which is advertised as "K Mount" may be K-mount, if the mount looks like K-mount. However, if it's advertised as K-Mount, and there is no close-up of the mount, then it isn't K-mount. Don't buy it. Make an exception if the brand is "Pentax" and the photos indicate Pentax (but there is still a risk that it isn't K-Mount).

2. The sites advertised on Pentax Forums (Adorama and B&H) are great sources of lenses. Used Photo Pro (Robert's Camera in Indianapolis, IN) is a great site, as is KEH, for used lenses.

3. The price of the lens sold on eBay will tend to reflect the going market rate. Absent a superb catch or happenstance (something mislabeled or purchasing it someplace in person), you will never be able to sell the "great deal" for what you paid for it.

4. A corollary to the last: it's also never in better condition when you try to sell it.

5. You have to make your own call as to what you purchase / sell. With that said, if multitudes of sage camera users on PF (the kind that were really excited when the K1000 was originally introduced) are entirely in disagreement with your own opinion, it would be wise to reconsider. If your opinion still differs after you reconsider, you're probably still wrong.

6. If you have a great lens that seems underrated on PF, then post a review. if you have a terrible lens that is highly rated on PF, either (1) you got a bad / damaged copy, or (2) your skills are lacking.

7. Upgrading your camera body is unlikely to fix the problem.

8. Don't begin by comparing your results to others' photography in a negative fashion. It's good to aspire and imitate great work, however - it's a good way to learn.

9. M42 lenses are fun. The adapters are expensive, however, and most third-party adapters suck.

10. Learn manual focus. It's a great way to hone skills and learn your equipment.

And above all, if you're not sure, ask on PF. Someone will respond within 30 mins or so, and if you're lucky, your question will be good enough to start a 3-4 page comment discussion. If you're unlucky, however, you still won't have a definitive response after that time.

I had three good copies of the 23A, so I gave one to a friend just starting out, who uses a Nikon (fortunately, one of my adapters was for Nikon). I might sell my 19AH, for the reason you state. However, I have found it slightly better indoors for kids' sports. Slightly better f-stop at range.

The 23A is, so far, my favorite lens ever. The 19AH is a close second for me.

I usually walk with my 60-300, but the 19AH has been a favorite lately. Here's an uncropped, then 50%, then 50% again series of a mourning dove. I'm so impressed with the lens' capabilities in terms of it's sharpness.

I've attached a 2x TC and a 1.4x TC to my 55BB. I used it mostly for moon shots (so far). F/8 is very slow, obviously, and the TCs don't help, so I usually get the best shots without using a TC. However, the weather has been really bad since I got the lens, so I haven't done much more with it.

I don't have the means to sponsor this at the moment, but this looks like a product that would be interesting to photographers. Add in a couple generic pads, and it could make for an interesting gear bag. Or, perhaps, a general backpack.

I purchased a tracker this Christmas. I haven't had nights that are both clear enough and warm enough that I want to spend time aligning and fiddling with the tracker. With that said, for moon photography, I may end up getting a decent telescope at some point.

That's a good idea! I will give it a shot. Also, have you ever tried the astrostacking with movie recordings on a Pentax?

Thank you! I shall do.

So, my middle photo, at 1/500, ISO 200, and f8 - may have actually been a bit slow? Perhaps 1/750 or 1/800?

---------- Post added 02-19-19 at 07:27 AM ----------

Not yet - the idea is in its infancy. However, as I work on it (soon to switch careers for more time), I will be here chatting about it.

---------- Post added 02-19-19 at 07:27 AM ----------

I have used it. I can almost never get as clear or close as I can through the eyepiece.

I have definitely noticed that. I've been thinking about combining pictures of the moon in other-than-full phase to combine different detailed aspects into one "full" moon.

I took some moon shots tonight - I've attached the best three to this post. First, the 55-300. Second, a Tamron 500mm Adaptall-2 SP (55BB). Thjird, the same lens, but with the 1.4x TC attached. Some editing in LR - the same for all three to heighten and darken contrast and cropped to approx the same size.

(I was fairly happy with all three. I should go get my Soligor 450mm, but I'm tired at this point.)

I think that I want to take a bunch more when the moon is less full and more accessible. However, of the three, I like the non-TC 500mm the best. I wasn't sure if that lens was going to do well, but it did.

Is there a filter for bright moon photos that would fit the Tamron 55BB?

Edit: I see the focus didn't quite come in on the third one. I cannot decide if I am missing the fine focus, or the TC is off. I'll have to try the TC on one of my 60-300s to see what happens.

Mossy, I think they were 450mm; F8; ISO 800; 1/125th.

I figured you knew the first two, but it's old habit.

Last night, I had (for the first time in awhile) a somewhat clear sky. It was still ice-crystal hazy overhead, but I managed to get a few of the gibbous moon (such as attached). After dehazing in LR, I was pretty pleased with the outcome. This was taken with a Soligor 450mm, which I got a few months ago. Before I read the warning about dropping out the iris by accident...I dropped out the iris, by accident. So, it's essentially an open tube. Still, I got the lens for about $20 (with shipping), so I think it's well worth the price.

That's fascinating history. I'm guessing they had some good people there if you had expert-level questions.

Also, I got a filter with this lens - "Spiralite Coated 72mm Haze 2A" is printed on it.
