Number Numbers. Everywhere Numbers (Lens's compared)

So who doesn't like a bunch of data?

EXACTLY! WE ALL DO! :P

With the DA*'s within my price reach at the moment, I started seriously investigating the measured differences between a host of other lenses I'm familiar with. So to settle the argument for me, once and for all, I've collated data from PhotozoneDE from measurements they recorded of a K10.

It's edit friendly so if you wish to continue to collate rubbish by all means.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15ZJ_Zq09J5H4897pY_RkEWq6xiLAQphg6Ds3...it?usp=sharing

I was mostly interested in the DA* 16-50mm and if it was worth lusting after in comparison to say a DA 15, 21, 35, 50

So for me, Yes. I can accept a trade off in correcting CA in post for the other benefits that the Zoom offer.

T'was interesting to see how the resolution and fall off from EV really wasn't that different from the DA 15, Which I confess was the greatest worry. As I have seen sooooo many lovely images of the DA15. Good to know the DA* at 16 should be as capable.

over here.

It makes the sense. f stop if focal length / entrance pupil

for a f1.4 lens

f1.4 = 50mm / 35.7

so wide open the 50mm f1.4 has a hole 35.7mm wide :P When we change that with that step down ring, you are effectively stopping down the lens... plugging the numbers in..

f = 50 / 28
f= 1.78

;)

No surprise it's sharper, my f1.4 stopped down a click is much sharper :P

Wombat2go said it first tho :P

wait wait wait wait wait wait.

as pointed out by another, this hood is simply changing the f stop, ala stopping down the lens.

Of course its going to be a shed load clearer. 50/28 is f1.78.

I call Shenanigans.

All this magic can be yours too just be moving the aperture ring...

It's a little concerning a lot here seem so insecure and defensive. Especially in something as frivolous as if your camera is "liked" by some entertainer (they are on youtube right?)

Rest easy everyone, Just, make, pictures :)

We are gathered here to mark the passing of a faithful little body that has travelled with me, heck, for 5 years?

It was bought prior loved with an intermediate fault of the SR system failing, and today, just in time for Christmas, it has finally given up.

Asking of it to capture a Indian Minor with it's child perched the with the sun shining toward it was to much. It finally let go. Activating the shutter now has it locked in a clickclikclicklickclick techo styles dance where you can only regain control by pulling the battery.

The we ol' thing captured a bunch of moments. To many friends, to many pleasant memories, heck it saw my engagement.

Ye K5 with Serial 3842406, with 33,727 images under your belt (I'm sure one of you nerds is keeping track of when these things die), I thank you.

Firstly, that little metal piece is the indexing for the later model Spotmatics! That is how the later model Spotmatics could determine what aperture the lens was set too. Those tabs were only on the later Super-Multi-Coated Takumars and SMC Takumars

Are you sue this is what is stopping you from moving the aperture?

Super Multi Coated Takumers have a (AUTO-MAN) switch on the side which only works freely whilst a little pin is pushed down. No not the aperture pin sticking out of the back but a tiny small pin found on the mounting surface. This pin needs to be depressed or you can not change between the auto and man settings. This is not found on "Super Takumers" but only on the later SMC and Super Multi Coated Takumers. I worry this switch it set to auto and thus moving the aperture indicator freely does nothing, and you have mistaken the metal bar as the aperture control lever?

I only say as much as I'm confused how that metal aperture indicator could be fouling your canon / or the adapter. They barely protrude and if anything, would hit the mirror, but still not get in the way of you selecting your aperture...

Folk have only needed to cut away at M and K, and A mount lens as they lack this auto / man switch. Your Takumar is good because it has the auto / man switch ;)

Well finally had some time to sit down and look at some of the images properly, even without SR being weird it was fine.

Again most of these with the M35 f2.8.

Spent a day walking the Key Summit trail (out near Milford Sound) Beautiful 6km~ walk up a hill to get wonderful views.

At the car park there I was with the DA* 16-50, DA* 50-135, and with the M35 f2.8 once more. After a bit of camera roulette, and packing the bag a couple of times whilst the misses was wearing sunscreen, I ended up once again, like I have all holiday, leaving the DA's in the car, attaching the M35 to the ye old K5, throw a polarising filter in the pocket and done.

And it was perfect. There really wasn't a vista where the 35mm wasn't wide enough. And forget about fast glass. The thing was set to f8, and its hyper-focal distance (4.5m, giving me Infinity down to 3m) all day. I merely adjusted the shutter a stop of two depending on what the clouds where doing.

It was a wonderful reminder that despite all the excitement and all the features we crave and carry on about, when it comes down to waking up a hill, less is more, and more then suitable.

The thing swang around my neck all day hitting trees, rocks, getting covered in dust, I might have been more careful with a DA* attached, the M35 gave me that freedom to just enjoy it. And the manual focus glass was just that little bit easy to focus since it was living at f8 all day. I was confident shooting my partner in front of me form the hip knowing it was going to capture the distance necessary.

Anyway I really enjoyed my walk up the hill with the faulting K5 (there are still a load of frames where the sensor seems to have been dancing around, but enough of the nice stuff to keep me happy) and the 80's M35 f2.8, and that's the point I suppose.

I bought my K5 second hand 5yrs ago? Has been faithfully by my side since. Have missed a beat. Just today I've noticed a reason issue with the SR system, it's playing up and giving me random frames, even with SR turned off. Things askew, horizons chopped off or missing completely, great things like that.

Anyway what a servent it's been.

Good on ya K5.

The Nikon F mount and Pentax K mount, are very similar. I used to just mount F Ai / Ais upside down turn it about 60%, there was enough grip on it.

Why however, well that's for you and you alone.

Mee, Why would I want 9 shot in sequence of the same subject? I knew where I wanted the car to be, so I tracked it as It until it was in the position of where I wanted it, then I took it's picture.

Even if the camera just snapped it out the air in that single instant, well isn't that's even more remarkable given the speed of the AF lenses we have?

But I'll play because something interesting did happen I suppose. I had turned around to talk to a mate then a car spun around behind me, The tyres squelching had me turned around and I snapped these in sequence.

Ah this ain't no fun.

Lets just all agree, that the myth of AF-C being unusable is rubbish. It's plenty darn usable. And then we can all get along taking photos like this guy.

See he's having fun.

---------- Post added 03-21-17 at 11:25 PM ----------

Speaking of fun

Porsche driving is not fun. It's serious business when one is not sleeping. :P How calm does this guy look. This is the exist from the down hill right turn before the banked rleft on to the start line. His foot would have been buried here yet no smiles or childish laughter. I'm unsure If I would ever stop laughing being on full noise in a 911.

Oh and yeah. Penatx AF-C is fine.

Had a ball down at Philip Island on the weekend with a local historic car meet. Sadly I arrived (and without a ND filter) so my shots were a little limited, ANYWAY!

With my K5, I had my DA200 and a DA50-135, having hear everyone tell me how rubbish it would be I was expecting to use them like I had my Taks previous, compose an part of the track I want a car in, wait for the car to enter, CLICK CLICK CLICK.

I was able to use AF-C to track them from corner entry, down out of the corner, all day long. I set my AF point to the right hand side (because that's usually where in the frame I wanted stuff) and it worked fine. As for speeds of auto-focus, I couldn't tell them apart, OH! both the DA200 and DA50-135 have been converted to screw driver.

Have some low res JPEGS;
