Another member here at PF from the Scottish Highlands (no names mentioned) continues to post great shots with taken with wonderful old manual glass.
Finally I decided to buy my own "Gorgeous Lady" - a Pentax A* 2.8/200. Got it from Japan at a reasonable price and in excellent condition just a few hours before I had to fly to China again for work.
Although I knew that I would hardly have any chance to take pictures during this trip I took the K1 with grip and the new/old lens with me on that trip. Stupid me, it's a heavy combo ...

At least I had a chance for a few test shots during a morning walk through the beautiful garden of my usual hotel in Xiangtan.

So these are some of the first shots - I am sure I'll have a lot of fun with this Lady!

Christmas gift ideas?

That's a good strategy! When my daughter was still riding in competitions I had to buy a pony which was more than twice the price of the most expensive car I ever bought:D.

As for Christmas gifts: last week I had to work in Shanghai and I visited this Gallery and shop again in Tian Zi Fang area.

My wife loves Rui Yuan's photographs of children, so I bought a couple of prints for her and one of his books for me.

K1 and FA 1.8/77 ltd.
If I would have to restrict my collection to just one lens (what a horrible idea:confused:) it would be the 77 limited.
Great for many purposes, also for landscapes ...

I hear you ... literally 1 hour ago I've received a nice package from Japan.
A* 2.8/200 in great condition. The rating of the Japanese seller was very conservative:).

The 77 ltd. was already my favourite lens on the K3.
I actually enjoyed the somewhat longer reach (back in the film days 135 mm was the FL I liked best ...)
Here is one of my favourite shots taken at a low light concert location ...

BTW, the guitar player is Martin Barre, for several decades the lead guitarist of Jethro Tull.

... but on the K1 I like the lens even better:D:D
The famous 3D effect seems to be even more pronounced on a FF sensor.

I am not sure if you have read what I wrote earlier. At least I don't see that this response is referring to what I have written. But fair enough.

I'm aware what IBIS is (I'm also an engineer - not "biz-" but mechanical). But what makes you think the "1/focal length" rule of thump (it's nothing else) has something to do with "1 mm camera shake"?? It is simply based on the experience that when an average photographer uses this rule for cameras with 35mm film or sensor, the circle of confusion resulting from camera movement still gives acceptably sharp pictures (for an average viewer, probably not for a pixel-peeper)..
Some photographers have significantly more steady hands or better technique, some are unable to get sharp shots at the same conditions.

Again, ultimate IQ requires selection of optimum aperture and a tripod.

Probably your thinking is way too focused on low ISO as the only parameter for ultimate IQ.
Obviously your initial "... 80% of all pictures could be improved" is (sorry) nonsense. Even if camera shake is reduced by IBIS you still would see potential blurr caused by subject moving (how should the camera in whatever auto setting know?) or wind moving the subject etc. etc.
So there would also be many shots that seem to have a better IQ (whatever that is) when shot at let's say 1/250 @ ISO800 compared to 1/30 with IBIS @ ISO100. There is more than one parameter influencing perceived IQ and it is up to the photographer to find the best setting for the subject.

If you really want best possibly IQ for stationary subjects there is a very effective and ultimate solution: use a good tripod!!

I bought a black&silver Q7 kit with the 02 and 06 lenses at a very low price as an exhibit camera in Tokyo.
Later I added the 01 prime. Since I got that prime I use it nearly exclusively.
On ebay I scored a set of 40.5mm filters (CPL, ND2, ND4, ND8, FLD)

Pixel level quality on my K-5

As others have said before: examples of "your best but still not good enough" shots might help to give advice.
I doubt that the pixel count of the camera is very important. The 16MP of the K5 are plenty enough ...

The lens and focus accuracy are definitely important.

Here is an example, significantly cropped from a shot with my K200D ( 10MP, but as mentioned a significant crop)
The lens was a 40 year old but excellent manual focus Macro lens (Panagor 2.8/90mm)

K1 and Tokina 3.5-4.5/20-35

A few from this afternoon.
As the name "New City Hall" indicates there is another one which is several centuries older ...

A building with quite an impressive lobby ...

In the lobby a few big displays (probably 4 x 5 meter) show the development of the city since the middle ages.
This one shows Hannover in 1939, just before WW II ...

... and this shows the level of damage 1945 ...

Opinion time: what are your favorite manual lenses?

The favourite manual lens I've ever owned was the SMC M 2/85 which I unfortunately sold after falling in love with the FA 1.8/77 limited - now my all time favourite.

The preferred manual focus lenses I own and use right now are the Rokinon 1.4/35 for every day use and the Sigma 4.5/500 for special occasions.

Nearly 50 years ago I started with a Porst body which was a re-badged Practica from East Germany with M42 srew mount.
Then switched to Minolta using XG-m, X-300 and X-500 (what a wonderful camera!!).
I seem to remember that some of these models had different names in the US.
