I almost sold mine due to the slow focus and af issues and how hard it was to give to someone to take a non blurry photo - even in auto mode..... but, I have to say, since the firmware update, this is much improved - it's almost like a new camera... word of warning with the 40mmXS, is that it is a little tight for indoor group shots - you are better of with a 21mm LTD...

I agree with you and it happened to me a number of times - here's one where it really should have something in focus:

K-01 shots where nothing is in focus?

I use AV mode mostly, and did notice that this was happening with the DA21 attached - the green icon shows focus, but the picture is OOF. It didn't happen all the time, so I marked it down as an inconsistency in the lens (I bought the lens 2nd hand) , as the DA40xs didn't seem to have the issue. I did send in my K-01 for repair and recieved it back about a week ago. So far so good - but I haven't taken that many pictures since I received it back, but maybe the reapair has fixed the issue? Will keep you posted.

So, the distributor agrees with me that the shutter should come down, and after playing with it for a while, has decided that it needs to be checked by Pentax Japan. Now my camera is on the way to Pentax Japan, and hopefully fixed/replaced and returned within 2 weeks! No K-01 for 2 weeks! what am I going to do...

Well, it seems there may be more to this story now... I have just spent the weekend out and about with this new battery, the original hasn't been replaced yet, and I just noticed that when changing lens, the shutter is always open... ie. I can see the sensor even in the off position, where before, I am sure there was a shutter protecting the sensor when changing lens.... Can anyone verify this, or am I just loony! The camera works perfectly though.... But if this shutter is not working then the camera is going in for a replacement/repair!

K-01 Walkaround kit - 15mm X 21mm?

I went through the same thoughts and went with the 21mm. I am finding it on my camera more than the 40mm, as most of my picture taking is of the family and friends! A lot indoors, in small low light environments like restaurants. The 21mm gives me a good FL, the 40mm is good for 1 or sometimes 2 people, but for more people, the 21mm is better. I also have the FA50/1.4 which is great in low light, but in these typical environments it remains a single person portrait lens for me.

I actually think he "hit the nail on the head" with this one. The camera certainly has its flaws, but, overall it's the same feeling I get with the camera - it's fun to use and has great picture quality - what more do you need!

So after charging the new battery, everything seems to be working fine. I guess I need to take it out again and start shooting. The new battery happens to be a generic battery and not an original though. Would it cause me any other issues?

So, I took the camera in today and the people there were very helpful. It seems the problem may be the battery or the charger. We went and tried a different battery and the camera turned on and was working fine. Took a few shots, everything worked.. They said the issue could be the battery - but they never or very rarely see this fail, or the charger - which could possibly be "damaging" the battery. So, they wanted to check both components to see what would need to be replaced... fair enough, except that I didn't bring my charger along.

Instead, I thought I would take back the battery and go and buy a new battery (it's good to have a spare anyway) and put it into the charger to see if I have the same symptoms. If I do, then I know it's the charger, if not, then it's probably the battery. Anyway, when I get back, the new battery goes straight into the charger and we'll see what happens.

If you are interested, they did mention that they haven't seen any issues with the K-01 (been in the market for about 1.5 months), and that they were selling out of them and not getting enough in stock - sounds like good news for Pentax fans!

Interesting - I never even thought about resetting it back to factory settings... I may have to try that when I am back in Singapore. I did ring the official Pentax distributor in Singapore, and they were more than happy for me to bring it in, to see what the problem may be. I would probably ask them for replacement - anyway, will let you know what they say.

The camera stays on until I press the shutter release. I can review pics, watch video, settings etc... But as soon as I press the shutter release it goes, no warning or anything. I am going on a 2 day business trip to HK, but as soon as I am back this is going in for servicing/repair. I have to say I am slightly disappointed, as I have owned many cameras, and maybe I have been lucky, but I have never had any issues with any of them. I was liking this camera so much I went and sold everything else off. Let's hope it is just an isolated case and that no one else has this, as I would hate for this to happen on a holiday vacation, or when I really needed it to take some pics.

Also just tried this - put battery in charger, when charging, take battery out and back into camera. Camera starts up and works. Half press for AF, no problem until I full press to take the picture... Then the camera fails... Can't start up again until I put the battery in the charger.

So, I tried again to charge the battery. Camera seems to work fine and battery meter shows full. I can do playback settings and everything, but when I try to take a picture it just dies and then I can't use it anymore.

Battery Issue?

Hi, I just had an issue with my K-01 and not sure what the problem is. The camera has been performing superbly for the last 3 weeks, but today it just died while I was taking photos. I had charged the battery overnight, so I thought I would have a full battery for a day of picture taking. I managed to take about 5 or so photos, and then it just stopped and turned off. I tried turning it back on, but to no avail. So, missed out on some good photos for the rest of the day.

When I came back, I thought I would try charging the battery again, and put it in the charger, it was green for about 30mins, and then the green light went off, indicating it was at full charge. I put the battery back in the camera and.... The camera worked! I thought great should be ok.... But as I was taking some photos again, the camera turned off and I couldn't turn it back on again.....

Any idea what is going on? I know it is still under warranty, but what is annoying is that I am traveling tomorrow, and was hoping to bring the camera along.... I was thinking of just getting another battery to see if this would work, but do you think it is something more than the battery? Any thoughts would be appreciated?

I don't have the FA 77, but I do have the FA 50/1.4, and the focus peaking seems fine and easy to use, but the FA 50 at 1.4 has always been a little soft.

The FA 50/1.4 is an awesome lens and still my favourite! (haven't used the DA 21 long enough yet to figure it if it's better for me) I picked it up for like $300 USD about 5 years ago and it has served me well - especially useful in low-light, and for head & shoulder portraits.

I noticed on the K-01 it has automatic lens correction, and when I take photos with the DA21, it does automatically correct it, which is great for single shot, but when you want to do high speed shooting, it makes the camera lag a bit.

Thanks all for the help. I pulled the trigger on the DA 21, as I found a good copy at a good price - it seems in Singapore at least, the DA 15 has more value than the DA 21 and I couldn't resist. Now have to go out and shoot!

Hi, I can't decide between the DA15mm and the DA21mm and am hoping you can help me out.

I just purchased the K-01 with the DA40mm XS, and feel that this camera is built for the prime lens! My current lens line up is the DA 18-55 (from my K100D), FA 50/1.4, DA40/2.8XS and I just sold my Sigma 17-70 (due more to the weight of the lens on the K-01!).

So, now I am looking at the DA15 or DA21 to complement. My primary concerns are IQ and weight, and indoor shooting! I find my picture taking seems to be more indoors with family - maybe more of a snapshot scenario - I like using the FA50/1.4, but this can be too tight, so ideally, something wider would be good.

Do you think either of these would work?

I have the first edition of the DA 18-55 that came with my K100D. Works fine for my use, and at least as fast as the K100D.

When you see the photo you want in the Play menu, press the WB button and access the Digital Filter, then it's on the second line, furthest right (with the mini car icon!) - press info to play with the settings.

I'm actually surprised with the amount of "editing" you can do in the digital filters!
