New Pentax DSLR on tuesday?

Agreed. I'm waiting for that one thing to get me to upgrade my K10D. I've brought along a GPS on several trips, and it's a pain to coordinate the time on the GPS with the camera and merge the data.

I would LOVE this feature.

Dirt/dust problem. Suggestions please?

That's the way I was thinking. If the blower didn't work, I probably would have taken it to the local shop. The problem is,
I usually walk out of there having bought something that I didn't intend to!

Success!

Thanks for the tips. Last night, I cleaned the sensor with a Rocket Blower, and the results were pretty dramatic. Here's a before & after crop of a white surface at f22.0. No flash, indoor light, hence the yellowish cast.

Thanks again!

I have been using the dust tool in Lightroom 2.0 to clean up images, and it's done a very nice job.

Based on the DSLR diagram shown here, Wikipedia DSLR I was cleaning the mirror and matte focusing screen.

I wasn't cleaning the sensor. And it makes sense that its the thing that is dirty, because I never saw the dust through the viewfinder.
I'm reading the link that Russel provided now, and I see that the camera can be put into a special mode to clean the sensor.
I'll finish reading the section and determine if I feel comfortable doing the cleaning myself.

Thanks!

I have a K10D, I first started noticing dust problems on my pictures in June. It happens on several lenses, so
I think it's in the body. I bought a cleaning kit (rocket blower, brush, spray, swab, cloth) and used them on the
reflex mirror and focusing screen. I don't know if I can/should try cleaning any other parts of the camera. Oh,
I also tried the cameras dust cleaning vibration system, but only once or twice.

FWIW, the dust is much more noticable with smaller apertures. Heres an example: The first is shot at
f3.6 and the second at f22.

Anything else that I can try? Or should I take this to a camera shop? Or send it in to Pentax?

Thanks for any ideas,
-Larry

Taking photos of my sisters puppy this weekend - recommendations ??

I really like the last one.

The facial expression on the first one is really good, but the sunlight on the right side is distracting. Might be worth cropping.

I just took a few of our 8 week old puppy in the sun.

I shot using RAW, so that I could do as much PPing as possible. In the first one, you can see that
the whites are pretty washed out, no matter what I did.

In the second one, we were in the sun, but I got pretty low and used the side of her face that was
in the shadow.

In the third one, we moved to the shadows.

Good luck. We gave our puppy some exercise beforehand, so she wasn't completely 'full of it'.

Good luck!

Cutest puppy ever?

Thanks for the comments and suggestions!

Dottie isn't a beagle and will probably end up a hundred pounds short of a Burnese Mountain Dog (although those are beautiful dogs). She's a Corgi - Austrailian Shepard mix.

Seems you like the second picture more. I actually prefer the first one...maybe because I don't see her sitting still very often!

Here's one more, just for fun.

How about this one? I took it in a pretty remote part of Michigan's Upper Penninsula. I'm returning from photgraphing a waterfall. The tracks you see are the ones I had made an hour earlier. I hung the camera around my neck, set the 2 second timer and 'posed'.

Londoners: need advice please

One more tip, Mel.

I just talked to my daughter and she agrees with my suggestions of Covent Gardens and Westminster.

But she also wanted to add the Embankment tube stop. She said that the National Theater is nearby, so there is always a lot of people milling about at night. There is a footbridge over the Thames that gives you beautiful views in both directions.

Care to see my pictures of London? There's a couple night pictures in there.

I just had a flashback to something that was scribbled inside the cover of my high school Latin textbook

Latin is a dead language,
As dead as dead can be,
First it killed the Romans,
And now it's killing me!

Sorry, just having a 30 year flashback.

Hi Mel,

I'm not a Londoner, but I do visit that great city 4 or 5 times a year. Maybe I can get this started and others will chime in.

I've taken some nice night shots in the theater area called the 'West End'. Either the Leicester Square or Covent Garden tube stops are convenient. That area is so busy at night that I wouldn't feel uncomfortable walking around taking pictures.

Another nice spot is the Westminster tube stop. Get off there and within a few steps you can take great pictures of Big Ben, the London Eye, Parliment, and Wesminster Abbey. All of them are well lighted and it's a safe area.

My daugter was an exchange student in London last year and was very comfortable gettng around on the subway, even at night. Others may know areas to avoid, but overall I think that London is a pretty safe city.

Have fun!

Thanks for the clarification on 'zooms'. I understand now!

I do have the 50 f1.4, and it's a fine lens, but I will need some more reach before next summer. I shoot equestrian events in indoor arenas. The 50 did not get me close enough, and my zooms were to slow. I'm keeping my eye out for that 200 f2.8!

I've recently converted from P&S, so I don't understand why a zoom lens had a negative stigma. I frequent a website that shows pics of birds taken with a 500 & even 600 mm lenses. What did they do before then?

Lightroom... is it for me?

I'm a big fan of Lightroom...but I had no workflow before I bought it. So, I didn't have to relearn a new way of doing things.

Since I bought LR, I have :

- Switched from JPG to RAW
- Bought another external hard drive, and use LR to automatically back up pictures
- Rate my photos as I import them
- Use keywording

Should I have been doing those things before I got LR. Yep, but with LR, I can do it so quickly that it is painless.

I'm even going back and catagorizing photos that I've taken years ago.

Yes, we just missed the Christmas Markets. I think they start this weekend. It was fun watching them put up all the decorations.
