Northern lights in Yellowknife

Don't shoot aperture priority for the northern lights. Stay in manual, start @ iso 3200, 15 seconds exposure, f2.8 and adjust from there. A steady tripod is of course necessary and using the wireless remote is perfect. 16mm is also barely wide enough on aps-c, if you can get anything wider it could help. This picture was shot @ 16mm. A wider lens can help to include interesting foreground items in your pictures.

I think it's the way the Russian language translate to English. It makes most Russian appear very demanding / complaining when they are not. It's the same for many Russian professional athlete. I am a big mma fan and one of my favorite fighter is Khabib Nurmagomedov. His twitter feed makes him look very demanding / or it looks like he is complaining a lot.

k-30. For the focus indicators in the view finder, not having them is frustrating.

Which Pentax DSLR has the fastest autofocus?

The K-50 may not be the best camera for birding, but the autofocus is reasonable and the weather resistance is a plus. With that said, I took this shot with a k-x and a 50-135, and it's hard to imagine a slower focusing combination!

K-3 or switching systems (sony, fuji)?

If that can be of any help, I had a k-x and upgraded to a k-30. My keeper rate is much higher with the k-30. The k-3 is even better, so going from k-r to k-3 would be a huge improvement in autofocus. But as others have said, pdaf autofocus will have errors in any systems.

This looks like good news for the tracking ability of the k-3. The hardware needed is all in the camera, with firmware updates and faster focusing lenses, my guess is that the k-3 should be able to be in the same league as the 7d for tracking.

Interesting fact, at the opposite side of the world (eastern Canada) this morning the indicated temperature in my car was -37C.

Another thing that is strange, if I hold the "+/-" button whit the interrupter in the off position, the camera will turn on and be fully functional, until I release the button. That is definitively not normal!

If I press the "OK" button and turn the rear wheel at the same time, I can change the desired parameter. If I touch the rear wheel, the front one stops working until I half press the shutter button. Just trowing that here in case someone has an idea of what parameter could be wrong.

Tried a fixed iso setting, same thing is happening. This time, it would not power on until I opened and closed the sd card door. So I tried a new card, but that did not change anything. Each time I remove the battery, the camera won't power on if I don't open and close the sd card door. I though my mind was playing tricks on me, but I tried it multiple time and it does the same each time. I may have got a lemon!

Rear scroll wheel not working properly

I received my new k-30 today and can't get the rear scroll wheel to work properly. For example, if I am in M mode and configure the rear wheel to control the aperture, I can't adjust it. Moving the scroll wheel will change exposure compensation, but nothing else. If I configure the rear wheel to control the shutter speed, the same thing is happening. If I use the front wheel, everything is fine, until I touch the rear one, then the front wheel won't work anymore and I can only change the exposure compensation again. If I keep the shutter half pressed or if I hold the "ok" button, the rear wheel works just fine... Using the +/- button won't toggle between the proper parameter and the exposure compensation like it did on my k-x. I updated the firmware to version 1.05 and nothing changed. I also tried resetting all parameters, but that didn't change anything. Anybody has an idea of what is wrong, or will I have to return it?

You can't even add the product to the cart on this website. When you click the "learn more" button, it links you to an external website that sells the k-30 for 625$. I would not trust that.

Are Landscapes Too Easy?

Easy!? No offence, but show us your masterpieces if landscape photography is easy.

I don't think any style of photography is easier than the other, because in the end it's the creativity and the vision of the photographer that will always push the limits and create beautiful pictures.

Cool picture. We get auroras where I live, but they are usually much lower on the horizon and I can't play with the composition of my pictures like I want. And the last time we had an interesting display, it that was all over the place, which was interesting in itself.

Night Auroras from October 8th

I took them in Amqui, Québec. Pictures 1, 3 and 4 are pretty much straight out of the camera with noise reduction applied, so the purple bands are real. What I like the most of these pictures is that they look like a painting.

edit : Interesting fact, most of these were taken @ iso 3200, and they have less noise than under exposed iso 800 pictures.

Night Auroras from October 8th

The 2nd one I pushed the saturation a bit. The others I tried to keep them as natural as possible. The interesting thing is that I was unable to get bright green colors in camera, because these auroras were moving so fast that everything in the frame became green with long exposures (20-30 seconds as I usually do for auroras). From the pictures I have seen from other photographers, I was out a bit late to get the best part of the action, but it was still amazing to see the lights moving so fast in the sky!
