Is anyone editing videos with the K-30 yet ?

I have been extensively using a trial version of premiere pro for my recent video projects, and I haven't really faced any issues.

For reference, my videos are all shot in 1080p at 30fps with over two hours of footage. I have done video work on both a desktop iMac (i5 2.8GHz, 16 GB ram, AMD Radeon HD 6770M) and a PC laptop ( i7 2.7 GHz, 8 GB ram, intel graphics 3000). Working with the video on the iMac is a lot smoother than the laptop because of the dedicated GPU, but I am still okay using my laptop for video work.

With Adobe Premiere (and with Vegas), I have the preview rendering down to 1/4 of the actual quality, and this allows for faster and smoother video playback. This is especially helpful for split screen work with two different feeds.

Also, Hollywood film makers used Canon 5D's and 7D's to shoot particular scenes or clips in movies such as certain POV action scenes in The Avengers, the motorcycle chase in Captain America, the racing event in Iron Man 2, the ballet rehearsals in Black Swan, and almost all of Act of Valor.

I have a part time job working for the communications office for my university's college of natural science where my main job is photography and secondary is videography (I basically do PR stuff for the college). I am also a full time student in a major that has nothing to do with photography. With my laptop, laptop charger, some notebooks, 2-3 lenses, maybe an external flash, and my DSLR all in my Kata DR-467i, I don't have room for another camcorder.

Secondly, I'm only going to be bringing one tripod if I have to, and I do not want the hassle of swapping the DSLR and the camcorder on the tripod. Plus, I prefer using ball heads, and I am okay with shooting video with a DSLR on a ball head but with a camcorder.

Thirdly, dedicated video gear is much more costly if you are looking for the creative freedom facilitated by fast, quality lenses and a good sensor.

I just ordered a K-30 even though I bought a K-r (my first DSLR) when that came out because I would like to have a DSLR that facilitates better photo IQ and more video capabilities.

In defense for mistakenly calling it "the world's first weather-resistant DSLR", the author may have intended to write "the world's first entry-level weather-resistant DSLR."

Canon is only about 20 years younger than Nikon and Pentax, and they all began making photography equipment around the same time. Plus, the photo gear industry has had a long time for the different brands to converge into a similar market.

You can't deny that Pentax and Nikon are putting a lot of effort into improving and marketing their video capabilities in their photography equipment.

How many promo videos for the new Nikon full frames are showcasing their video capabilities?

You Tube

It's funny you mentioned how Canon is a brand with a "I do lots of stuff" thinking because Nikon has explicitly advertised the Nikon D4 as a "Multi-Media DSLR".

Pentax is not taking the pure photography route either. The new Prime M engine is advertised as a major improvement in video and live view capabilities, and Pentax has also sponsored video projects to showcase the K-01's video capabilities as seen in other parts of the forum.

The major advantages of shooting video with DSLRs over traditional video cameras is ergonomics, specifically size, and price for decent quality, and that's why movies such as The Social Network, Black Swan, The Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man 2, Act of Valor, and so on have scenes shot on DSLRs. The interesting thing is that a good majority if not all of cinematic movie scenes shot on DSLRs are shot with Canon 5d Mark II's and 7D's. You don't think Nikon or other photography-centric camera brands would want a piece of that action?

Video is also on the rise in photojournalism with press companies finally embracing the internet as their main source of views and revenue. With embedded video technology and easy media sharing, it would make sense for photojournalists to be able to take photos and shoot video with the same gear. A small indicator of this is Adobe introducing video capabilities with Lightroom 4, a photo workflow and editing software mainly for photography.

There will be a push for video from most major camera brands.

Yea, I, too, would like to know how the K-01 handles overheating.

In my part time job, my boss wants me to start doing some more video stuff, which is cool because I have been wanting to get into some video. Today, I went to go do a small video project with my K-r, and its inability to handle the heat from live view makes doing video projects nearly impractical.

Question: Which SD Card for casual video?
Posted By UdonUdon

In order to achieve a certain class ranking, an SD card must meed the minimum write speed established by SDA for that class.

In other words, although the 32GB SanDisk Ultra is a Class 4 SDHC card, it can qualify as a Class 10 SDHC. SanDisk does this is because there were only four classes at the time: 2, 4, 6, and 10. Having classifications is a good way for non-technical customers to have some grasp of the performance of the card and differentiate between the performance tiers. It would be confusing if all of SanDisk's cards were class 6 and 10 even if they kept the "ultra" and "extreme" titles.

SanDisk and a few other brands over-qualify their cards because Class 2 and 4 cards are already extremely cheap, but the lack of higher classifications requires them to divide their cards up among under-representative classes.

Well, that was the case until UHS (Ultra High Speed) cards were developed, but they also have a different and faster transfer protocol similar to the upgrade between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.

There aren't many other SD brands that do this

New Sigma DP1 and DP2 Merrill with the same 46MP Foveon X3 sensor from the Sigma SD1

Yea, I was a bit hesitant to put "46MP', but I wanted to emphasize that it's the same sensor as the one found in the SD1. However, there are reports that images produced from the SD1 do scale up quite smoothly to larger sizes.

I'm not a Sigma fan at all, but in my opinion these two releases are a great move on Sigma's part. If SIgma is not willing to join another proprietary mount, than I think Sigma should focus only on non-ILC's and offer "compact" packages that stand out like these two.

I was really surprised to see such a commercialized photography magazine give the K-5 an award, and it definitely deserves the award.

I am also really glad to see Rokinon get an award.

Well, of course. The comparison between the two parent companies just makes a good reference point for gauging how much the Pentax imaging brand will expand over the next few years since the Hoya-Pentax imaging department made significant advancements despite being the secondary Pentax department. Now that Pentax imaging has become a primary concern, it will be very exciting to see what Pentax Ricoh has in store for the market.

I believe Biro is alluding to when Hoya acquired Pentax mainly for the medical equipment department, which put the imaging department on a relatively lower priority level after the buyout.

I'm not going to pretend I understand this. If it was about processors and output channels, I might, but optics is not my forte (i.e. my current studies).:o

Could any body explain what the difference is between this and the traditional mini-sensor-and-optics phase detection autofocus?

Pentax version of the Sony a77 coming ?

Your expensive glass will meter the same on an A77. When sony calibrated the ISO levels they included the mirror as a factor. If Sony didn't do this, then many long-time photographers "internal light meter" would be skewed up and, just like you said, lenses wouldn't meter the same. Plus, it is called "International Organization for Standardization" for a reason.

If you are wondering, here is DxOMark's measurement of the A77's ISO sensitivity compared to nominal ISO sensitivity. It's pretty close, it is nearly exactly the same as the Nikon D7000, and it is much closer than the Canon 7D. Also, yes the A77 was tested with the mirror down.

So, yes, metering will be the same on A77 as other DSLRs; it's just that the SLT has taken a step back in terms of high ISO performance.

What Kai of DigitalRev should have done is compared a bare-body shot of the A77 with the mirror down to bare-body shot of a regular DSLR with the mirror up (obviously).
