how to know the K-X video is 4:2:0 or 4:2:2?

Hi tuco
i just search, found this
MJPEG (Motion JPEG) Video Codec

"The JPEG must be YCbCr colorspace, it must be 4:2:2, and it must use basic Huffman encoding, not arithmetic or progressive. . . . You can indeed extract the MJPEG frames and decode them with a regular JPEG decoder,....."

the reason is about chroma keying
so i guess now i have a camera in 4:2:2

Hi all

i think it;s likely 4:2:0 but wish to confirm it too

also the bit rate of each settings of video quality.

thanks

Hi all
i just check the DPReview KX sample video
and i find it smoother than my KX at 100ISO
i m not sure is it my settings my the video become very noisy
i use P mode to ensure it's 100 ISO at 1/50sec on manual nikon lens
* Yes old Nikon Lens can fit into pentax K mount.

i set sharpness to minimal and
contrast to lowest
color is middle

anyone has combinbation to make smooth video?
i find from iso 100 to 400 make no difference, all noisy.
800ISO up is super noisy.
thanks

flickering and colour shift in video

Dear All
I stop testing from the time being, but as radix says, it happens a lot in low light
and so far i avoid using shadow/highlight compensation too much, i keep it at middle.

on most of fine sunny days, no problme so far.
but when i shoot at very dim light and also tungsten, it comes often.
refer to my vimeo clips, i find it's not possible to avoid it.
but just simply over a bit and darken it so most of flickering becomes not so obvious.
i m using the factory default firmware now.

best regards

K-x video in Sony Vegas 9

in vegas , u can set up HD 1280x720P as exactly in K-x, just type the size and pixel1:1 and then save as format.

slow pc - use virtualdub, it might need to install ffshow codec or morgan codec first
, i use virtualdub for years and seems this is best free tool for slow pc.

however it's ideal for triming and convert to H264 or whatever codec wrap in avi.

there's no timeline and some how u need to learn it before u can use it well.

the killer in Vdub is frame rate change -- IMHO

hi all,
here is the link:
flicker-noflicker-noclicker-darken 25% on Vimeo

i think i work in a way to avoid the flickering
dont set the shadow and highlight adjust to max, i m using middle at 0.

dont let the video underexposed.
and instead, over exposed a bit , and then darken it to it should be,
well be aware of burning in highlight,
i set up the alert.
this might help to crash to black and trigger the flickering.

Hi thanks for the info, i m also looking for softwarem, particular on ISO.
I use virtualdub with morgan codec, chroma smoothen to 4:4:4 and temporal smoothen a bit and output to uncompress TGA or BMP

i think it;'s 8bit, but if u want to be better in post u may upres to 10bit.
it;s better when u correct it for less banding effect.

I think u can be sure change nothing if u r not doing levels or grading same format like Jpg, and read the both highlight and shadow in terms of SRGB.
in mac --digit color meter is handy.

most p[ost hse use DPX with LUT, so they can have multiple color reference test without saving again. but TIFF, BMP or TGA works too just bigger.

Coby
thanks for the info.
I m not sure why the K-x has similar exposure, but the video is like at 400ISO , very grainy. lots of noise.

nothing like 100ISO
I m not saying ur info is wrong, i believe it too as i compare the AV mode and video mode. seems shutter is running about same as 100ISO in EV 8.

could u tell me how u get the shutter speed reading out from video?
thanks

Jason ,
if u think this way,
IMHO, it's very sad.

K.M.Lo is a professional DOP using top gear and a micro-budget film maker that 100% no problem to operate small DV/HDV/DVSLR at dirt cheap price.
what matter is result. great lenses not alway $$ same as great camera.
Bolex is known for quality at dirt cheap price.
Arri is always cheaper than panavision
Canon Hv20 is insanely great even compare to Arri D20, mind that is 1% of the cost.
both can co exist and doing great.
if ur great - a webphone camera can be great camera too

Any experience to share on using MF lens for video

I never use AF , if i can use MF
simple as that, all movies shot on 16/35mm are with good MF lenses
u can have say and make a great focus pull, auto focus is only good when u have no time nor visable light to do so.

I m not against as many great photojournalist depending on it.
however, the screen is very small in K-x and need to blow up and use a hood.
viewfinder is kind of ok, but u must know how to set up focus first.

without extenal monitor is bad bad bad.
may be i should search for cheap USB to Video cable

Hi falk

shadow/highlight adjust - may be this is the problem
I think i set max may trigger some dark area flickers.
i now try different settings.
but sure cant be min. the highlight banding with halo is very bad
also in general it flattens the contrast a bit.

Thanks, u know how many sleepless nights in Phnom penh, i woke up 2am to test the camera. it;'s a night food stall. for coconut juice and fried noddles with lots of MSG.

thanks for ur effort to answer me

dear Falk
thanks
I just fixed it, u can downlaod from vimeo

i think it might be the ISO.
as i did a new test last nite at 2am ( or morning)
yes, under tungsten light it flickers
and i suspect its when the ISO becomes very high.
the shadow/highlight adjust - well if i turn it off
it's a yellowish halo banding around the burn highlight.

and in general, i see it's darker and more contrast
( i compare the histogram of all settings)

WB shift - i also notice this even i double check the WB is at daylight.

so is that what u mean - under low light/high ISO, colour change WB shift is unavoidable?

I only use daylight so far. i m not an automatic person.
all in manual mode if i can.

the lens is old FD lens. mount without touching any eletronic contacts.
my custom image setting,
saturation -3
HUE +-0
SHA/HIGH +3
Contrast -4
Sharpness -4

D range - only highlight is ticked
Colour space - sRGB

i think will run an all EV test to map out all combination
What software u use to read the data like shutter speed/ISO from video
Exiftool - i m not sure it correctly tell.

pardon my english ( my 2nd language)

After whole week test
i finally found some setting might cause flickering and colour shift,
it;s when i use exposure compensation

when i out normal, or minus - no problem.
but when i increase the exposure,
the flickering comes

ironically, if i get the same exposure by the camera itself without using the E.C.
no problem.

still running some test on this n that

but in short

avoid dialling to plus zone in E.C.
also don't under expose too much, i see lots of banding in shadow area.

may be avoid high speed shutter - i have yet to run a test on it.

but when i test the camera at Phnom penh, at new yr party all great
but when i shoot at out door, i first think it's the overheat.

anyway, it;s not trouble free with this 700$ K-x

though in general i can live this camera.

Kx (or K7) Controlling shutter speed?

Falk
Happy new yr
I mean the 3rd adjustment in pix profile
as i test it in Hong Kong, with shadow/highlight adjust at minimal
i see banding at near highlight,

http://www.vimeo.com/8256552

dynamic range is another issue- i m ok with highlight only, not the shadow.
becos i find it make some ugly noise between the 0% black and dark grey.
it create some noise in dark to black range.

over heating - i have no proof yet, but the sunday shooting, i found almost all footage becomes very grainy noisy, consider i m shooting at bright after sun and also interior, but cases over heating warning comes after 2-3 minutes.
and worse is flickering and colour shift in dark to black areas.
i did made a still shot at that time at 1/800 sec @200ISO
later the video shows in high speed shutter too.
so it;s impossible to have such high iso at video.

it simply created totally unusable footage.

when i test in Hong kong under 13degree C, i see no problem at all.

the first video is testing on this fixed iso issue.
turn out it;s not possible.

BUT, a work around if u have a say to set up the light to EV7/8/9 at F2.8
pls refer to the charts:

Pentax K-x - exposure
Falk Lumo: K-7 as a movie camera -- PART II: Controlling video recording

I really think pentax should give full manual control
I also find the flicker and color shift at low light dark area
:(

No, i m not offended
as I stated already

3. limit the auto ISO ( some says u set at AV and then it will stay) but i find not.

do check other posting, falk and another mapping out the exposure combinations.

i have to deal with overheating and banding /noise issue.
i wonder if it;'s related to over heating.

after all, for 700USD i cant expect too much.

Hi,
I wish to get 100ISO too
but if i turn off the shadow /highlight adjust it becomes banding in high light.
actually i did some shooting and very bad
lots of banding in shadow and grainy
also over heating. K-X simply not for Cambodian climate of 35C.

surprisingly i tested in Hong Kong when it's cold not a problem at all.

I try to stick to EV 9/8/7 and see how

when i test it in Hong Kong , it;s like 13C so never see any flicker nor over heat.

too bad, it;s totally non usable in hot climate

Hi,
I come across the issue,
under 35C cambodian climate. the camera keep showing the over heated warning.
and if i cool it down and restarted, it last only 2-3min. then come again and again, end up i have to drop the shooting.

Very unlucky, i tested in 13C Hong Kong, never have problem, even turn on almost an hour.
