DXO Tests MX-1, Same Results as Q

DXO has tested the MX-1. It turns in a respectable score, but what's even more impressive is how well the Q does with its smaller, older sensor. I never cease to be impressed by the tiny little Q. At recent firesale prices, it really is a tremendous bargain. I like the MX-1 a lot, but it seems unnecessarily large and heavy by comparison. That's ironic since the Q is the one with interchangeable lenses...

Comparison.

Empty coffee mug, shot using the Dramatic Monochrome filter.

It made me chuckle because it came out looking like a certain letter...

Fish eye and Q

Anyone else notice that this lens is sharper -- at infinite focus -- if you back off from the "far" end of the distance "scale" about half a degree? If I crank it fully over, the focus is soft soft soft. Wind it back 1 mm and it's much better.

The Fisheye is a neat lens. First time I've used focus peaking, too. What a great feature.

Received mine today, also from B&H! They must have had some extra stock, but didn't want to put the $80 price on their own website. Very interesting.

EDIT: Neat looking lens. The supplied cap is incredibly cheap feeling. Guess that's why they call it a "toy" lens. ;-)

Haha, the leather is a bit retro. It even comes with a "Genuine Leather" tag on it. Classy! That said, the 1980s feel is charming and the bag is exceptionally robust. As you said, for $10 you cannot go wrong.

Someone here recommended this Pentax -brand case.

It's made out of leather and fits the Q + two lenses perfectly. Here's mine...

DxOMark: Q vs. Q10

Fair point. I should have said, "does anyone expect the Q to be a high ISO camera?" If you can use long enough shutter speeds/low enough ISO, then the Q works fine at night. :p

It should also be noted that the Q has much nicer high-ISO grain than many cameras. In a way, this makes it more usable at high ISO than it would otherwise be.

DxOMark: Q vs. Q10

Thanks for this. The results are completely unsurprising. The Q isn't playing DXO's game, and therefore doesn't perform very well by their measurements. The Q isn't trying to be a DSLR. It's just trying to be itself. It is what it is. It's economical, the lenses are sharp, and the sensor does a fine job in good light. It is not a low light camera, but does anyone really expect it to be?

Too bad DXO doesn't measure intangibles like fun, enjoyment, ease, and surprise/delight.

I have a shameful secret. I really like using $1.00 Nintendo Wii wrist straps on small cameras. They are fully adjustable and work really, really well.

Red Filter for Q?
Posted By PenTX

I'm planning to take my Q on a long upcoming trip to the Desert Southwest. It will serve as a back-up camera, and I'd like to use it as a bit of an art project.

One thing I'm considering is limiting myself to monochrome JPEGs -- to essentially treat the Q as if it's a b&w only camera for the duration of the trip.

Question: would shooting with a red 40.5mm filter be any different than just clicking the "red filter" button in Lightroom during post-processing? I haven't tried colored filters for digital photography before.

Thanks much.

Pentax Q + 02 Zoom kit $189.99 shipped @ newegg

I managed to assemble my "kit," consisting of the body, 01, and 02 lenses for $310. I did the ShopNBC deal, then purchased the 01 kit from Groupon, harvested the lens, and sold the body on eBay.

In all, I am satisfied with the overall price I paid for the kit. I suppose someone could have gotten the Groupon deal on the 01 ($199) then followed it up with this deal on the 02 ($189), then re-sold the body on eBay for $150 and gotten the whole package for $230 (!!), but that would have taken some very fortuitous timing. Kudos to anyone who managed that trick!

To UV or Not to UV
Posted By PenTX

I use UV filters. So do most of the photographers I travel with. I'm often shooting in dusty environments where I'm moving around a lot. The filter is cheap insurance. Any nominal degradation of IQ is worth it for the protection. A circular polarizer can dramatically improve the look of outdoor shots, and should be a part of any photographer's kit. UV is more of a judgment call.

When I'm shooting on a tripod or doing indoor work or portraiture, the filter comes off because IQ becomes paramount. Of course, in those cases I'm not really using my Q anyway. :p

What a Great Backpacking Camera
Posted By PenTX

I picked up a Q as a second camera for the specific purpose of backpacking with it. Small, light, durable, inexpensive -- seemed perfect. I had a chance to test my premise this past weekend on a trip to Big Bend.

The Q certainly lived up to my expectations. The 02 zoom was a versatile companion and the raw files it generated have proven surprisingly flexible in post-processing. I never felt the weight of the camera around my neck (although I definitely needed my backup Wasabi Power batteries).

I was concerned about how the Q might handle cold temps (35 at night) and dust, since it's not weather sealed, but neither seemed to faze it. When I went to clean the camera after the trip, there were only a couple of specks to be found on the camera and lens.

In all, I continue to believe that the Q is a little gem. It's an excellent backpacking companion, delivering better IQ than any "rugged camera" at a lower cost. The magnesium build and smart Pentax engineering render it tough enough for multiple days in the back country. (I did not use it in the rain, where I would be a heck of a lot more cautious.)

Bravo, Pentax.

This is pretty heavily cropped and color corrected, but I have to say: I love the grain on this camera. Many people have commented that it looks like film and they're right! I think the trick to enjoying the Q is to embrace the grain. :p

Do I need the Standard Prime?

For similar money to the prime, you can get the new 15-45 f/2.8. Combined with the 02 zoom, that gives you a big 28-248mm equivalent zoom range. The 15-45 is also said to be a good performer.

I like shooting with primes but the Q is a second camera for me. The range of the two zooms combined is incredibly versatile and, to my mind, a better value. Plus the 02 is actually pretty good in the middle of its range where it overlaps with the 01 prime.

Obviously, YMMV.

new q owner groupon 199.99 kit w/ 01 lens

Well, despite the fact that Groupon usually has a "no returns" policy for Goods, they are allowing these to be returned for any reason due to their crappy website pictures.

We're writing to let you know that one of the featured images for this deal displayed an incorrect model. The Pentax Q10 was pictured temporarily instead of the Pentax Q. Also, although the specifications were listed correctly, we erroneously noted below the image that the lens has zoom capabilities when it does not. We sincerely apologize for any confusion caused by our error.

Because most packages have already shipped, we are unable to cancel or change your order at this time. If you are in any way unsatisfied with your purchase, you can return it for free, 100% on us.
