Ratings and Reviews do you trust them and why?

It's hard to add to the wisdom already listed. I would echo the comment above about a new user giving a thing a 10 just after getting it in their hands, these are useless. For a long time ImageResourse (IR) was my go to place (outside of PentaxForums of course). I just found their reviews very helpful. For me buying camera gear, I have to have multiple reviews from multiple sources. I apply the same to online retailers like Amazon or ebay (I'll add B&H, KEH, Adorama, etc.). Specifically for online retailers, I'll usually read the good reviews (like 5 stars or similar) and the really bad reviews.

All in all, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and buy the darned thing, I've been skunked a few times, let down a few more times, but mostly found most reviews are reasonably useful information. Caveat emptor, I believe...

Edit: Yes, renting equipment (especially expensive ones), is a very good way to go.

Thanks very much for this, it's an interesting way to approach this subject. I had set user modes on my K-3 a while back but haven't really tried on my K-1 or 645z. But basically I have a setting to get me into my favorite HDR settings, one for nighttime, and another for action. This chart will help me work these on my z.

Personally, I've always traveled with mine in it's own case (the one that comes with it). My other lenses and bodies go in ThinkTank bags. I traveled this way to Tanzania two years ago with it.

My top ten favorite lenses and the honorable mentions

Actually, I meant the FA*85 f1.4 not the K 85 however, there is a link and connection between the lenses. The DFA 100 WR is a wonderful lens but...I always wanted the now mythical Voighlander 125 macro as my macro holy grail.

Thanks to you for an interesting thread!

Ok, thought about it some more and I'll take a stab at my top ten (covering the same 6x7, 645, and full frame systems).

No particular order
Pentax 6x7 105 great all around lens (my real choice here is the 67 LS 165mm lens but it's really specialized).
Pentax 67 55 as a very nice wide angle lens.
Pentax DA 645 28-45 zoom expensive but amazing for landscapes on the 645z
Pentax FA 645 120 macro just darn amazing lens
Pentax DFA* 70-200 zoom, razor sharp brilliant lens
Pentax DFA 100 WR macro, just the best 35mm macro I've ever used
Venus Laowa 12mm f2.8 prime - crazy wide lens very sharp as well
Pentax DFA 15-30 zoom very very very useful lens for landscape work
Pentax DA 10-17 fisheye (and also it's predecessor the FA 17-28 fisheye), this lens changed my vision and really showed me what photography can do.
Pentax 85mm f1.4 the best portrait lens ever I believe.

Well yes, their are more too and I'm not discounting the FA 31, 45, and 77 or other limited lens and some others as well but I'll go with the above list for now.

I must say that this is a very interesting Top 10 and as far as I can remember, this mix of 6x7, 645, and full frame lenses is unique. While I have (and use) all of those systems and have about half of your top ten, I would say that if I were to prepare a similar list, it would be quite different as I really prefer auto focus. Not really into preparing a similar list today but I like your thinking and choices.

Regardless, I commend you on the thought you put into this list.

Pentax Q-7 Mode dial issues?

While I thought I'd done that, just did a test of this now. It sort of worked...for awhile, then it reverted to the above operation. However, this does point to the problem. Thanks.

Pentax Q-7 Mode dial issues?

Thought about that. This has occurred with both the 02 and 06 lenses. Also noticed last night that on start up the camera worked correctly ... and then when I changed modes flipped back the conditions I described above. This has convinced me that, something is wrong either with the mode dial function or something internal. Looks like it will need to be sent to Precision Cameras for repair. Fortunately, they only want $132 for repair.

Pentax Q-7 Mode dial issues?

So, I was going through a lot of my older camera gear and decided to refresh batteries in my gear. Dragged out my old trusty Q-7 and found it was needing a charge. The spare batteries were ok, anyway, I'm doing the recharge now. As I really haven't used it much since my 365 project in 2015, I was playing around with is and noticed something curious. Granted, once upon a time I knew my Q-7 inside and out, there has been enough time passed that I've forgotten a lot of nuances.

What I noticed that the mode dial (P, A,v Tv, M, Auto, etc.) seems to be acting a bit weird.
When Av, Tv, or P mode is selected the camera display shows M mode selected.
When it's in BC or M mode the camera display shows BC mode selected.
When it's in Auto or SCN mode the camera display shows SCN selected.
When movie mode is selected the display shows M mode selected.

Note that the mode displayed is how the camera behaves too. Also the firmware is 1.01 which is the last update.

Clearly I don't believe this is the way it's intended to work. So I'm asking 1) if anyone has seen this behavior, 2) can you confirm my conclusion?, and 3) is this worth fixing (I realize that, is really up to me at this point but I'd still like an opinion).

Thoughts?

Game Single In - August 2019

August is a long hot month here and unless I travel there never seems to be enough new interesting things to photograph. I shot all month with the DA 35 Limited mostly mounted on my trusty old K-5 and I have to say that once again I'm impressed with this impressive limited lens. It's very sharp and versatile lens. As a macro lens, it does just what you'd expect, for general purpose use it's does quite well although so do a lot of other lenses. I've had it for a number of years but tend to forget about it, that will change now.

Thank you to all who took the time to comment on my posts. The last few weeks have been very busy for me and I could not comment on everyone's images as much as I would have liked to.

The Pentax 645 45s -- just how meh are they?

I have an A 645 45 and used it as my wide angle lens for my 645 and 645n very successfully. No, it's not the 35mm - which I wanted for my 645 and 645n - but it was a very serviceable lens and gave me a lot of lovely images. Oh, and it was considerably cheaper than the A or FA 35mm lenses.

I will say that now with my 645z, I own the considerably more expensive DA 645 28-45 zoom and it replaces all of my wide angle 645 lenses, however, with your rig, that wouldn't work for you. Basically I suggest you get a 645 A 45.

The short answer for me is...the one I'm currently using. However, lately it's a toss up between the DFA*50 f1.4 and the Venus Optics Laowa 12mm f2.8.

Pentax/Samsung D-Xenon 12-24mm, is it worth it?

I have owned a copy of this lens for almost 10 years. For a time, it was my very most favorite ultra wide angle lens - it still is but I've acquired other lenses and now a K-1 which draws more attention than my trusty old Xenon-D 12-24. The only problem I have with it is that, although it is an exact copy of Pentax's 12-24 lens (and likely made by Pentax at that point), all of my Pentax cameras K-20d, K-5, K-3 fail to read what this lens is - by that I mean record the lens in the exif data. It's an annoying quirk and as I like to have this recorded by the camera, I've often considered replacing it with the Pentax version. That said, because Samsung quit the Pentax emulation of it's cameras ? 8 years ago, you might have a problem getting it serviced. Don't know, haven't needed to check on this but I've worried about it for a long time. User note, if you do get this lens, don't use a polarizer on it with landscape shots. It's so wide that the sky will darken in a portion of the image leaving the rest undarkened. Like this image in Yosemite shot at 12mm.

Personally, I feel that $80 is really dirt cheap for this lens. It brings up the old adage - you get what you pay for... Yeah, I'd ask for some images from the camera showing the decentering issue and see if you can live with it. OTOH, $80 is not much to loose if it's a dog. It's a great lens to use. Somewhere back a few years on PF there was a review of the three competing lenses in this class, the Tamron 10-24, Sigma 10-20, and Pentax 12-24. As I recall, the Pentax version was the best overall. I felt that then, and still do now. Here is a shot I took in Barcelona 2 years ago, again at 12mm.

All modern Pentax battery grips are similar in design. Never found it annoying. Like the fact that they also hold a spare SD card in them too.
