I've been shooting for a new local newspaper, The Portland Upside. They're tired of all the negativity in the news and just want to report the good things happening in town.
I have 4 shots in the first issue (all on page 4 and in color!)... all snapped with the K10D or K20D... Portland Upside - issues |

Gosh.. thanks everyone! I have been lurking lately. Just haven't had much time to get my thoughts down in a post and respond to so many incredible photos that I see from the forum.
I have also been looking at how I was expressing my critiques and have been working on a way to soften, encourage and inspire, still delivering truthful feedback. And, learning to accept and learn from the feedback given to me. I have been learning how to listen, talking to so many teachers, from so many walks of life, in my local community.
I appreciate you all, even if we haven't connected on the forum. Everyone here loves these kooky Pentax cameras! This glass captures our unique experiences! And, I'm really proud to be a part of our global Pentax tribe!

It's weird when there are a couple AF-540's firing into an umbrella sitting around and a fan blowing at your subject during such candid moments.
Shot with the K20D and the lens I began lusting after before I even had a Pentax camera body, the FA 77mm 1.8 Limited. All of the examples I had seen from you good forum members, those couple of years ago helped firmly sway me towards Pentax. I know I've only begun to unlock the potential of this lens! It will not stray far from the 31mm Limited. PENTAX Photo Gallery |

I was meeting a couple clients at the park to snap some publicity headshots for the Portland Upside.... there just happened to be a little league game in the 6th inning. The little brothers and sisters not in the game were all hanging out together.
All snapped with the K20D and DA* 50-135mm 2.8.
My first candid snap
Strolled over to the fence to snag one of the game
Heading back to meet with my clients, I heard a small voice yell at me...
Kid 1: Here he comes again!
Kid 2: Hey! Hey! Take our picture!
Me: All righty.
Kid 3: Why are you taking pictures?
Me: Because it's a beautiful day! Smile! |

Difficult shooting conditions, with a backlit subject. Out of the two, the second has more impact for me.

Amazing what you can find right around the corner! Now that the weather is getting nicer, I'm going to have to start doing more street shooting.
That second pic... I was trying to show the contrast in transportation choices. If I wasn't in such a hurry, I would have gotten more of a closeup of the trike. There are so many funky bikes in town! Thanks for your thoughts!
The delivery bicycles are used for local deliveries in downtown Portland and the close-in areas just over the river. I talked to the drivers. They had just delivered one month of coffee to a local business. They try to promote using less gasoline. |

Love the location! Dig the model! The first image is a pure stunner! Cracking shot! The pose, composition, grainy processing.... all comes together. The other two shots are good... great even. But, the first one has something magical.

I could have easily put in more sequences of different poses... or, just a few of each pose. If it was live video and one was watching a shoot from a step or two back, I doubt there would be similar complaints. Instead, I choose to share 95% of the material that would see the trash bin. That's also why I choose to share 3 shots at the end of the video for a longer duration.... 3 keepers out of 150.... to show that my style of photography takes a lot of pics, then the self-critical editing begins. That's the process of a many working photographers.
I have so much to learn about lighting and photography in general. I'm not the best photographer out there. I shoot what makes me happy. And, I always seek to refine my technique in every shoot.

I could get lost in those eyes.... if I was younger and not married..... oh, and if she was straight, LOL!
Thanks Jim! There are a lot more shots with the rope.... once I go through the lot in a few days, I'll post a few.

First off... Not into pouting. Not into frowns.
And, don't ya know every model has a look? This one is called "Blue Steel." Watch Zoolander! :p
I shoot 150 to 300+ images in a shoot and keep a dozen or so to share with the model and put on my web site. Out of those dozen, I might share 2-3 with the forum and maybe, just maybe, choose to add one to my portfolio. The vast majority of these shots will head into the trash bin (or the archives). That's why you're not seeing a lot of variation..... when editing, I look for those singular moments... that mix of pose, exposure, lighting, expression and as the French say (or is it Mike Meyers?), that certain "I don't know what?" that stands out above the shot right before it.
Maybe you shoot models too and can pull totally unique looks out of your subject throughout hundreds of images. I'm not that good. I simply wished to offer a glimpse into my own process for those interested in model photography. :o

Before my critical mind sends most of these to the cutting room floor, I took 160 or so (out of 280+) unedited shots and cobbled together a quick video. All images snapped with the K20D with the DA* 16-50mm 2.8 and FA 77mm 1.8 Limited lenses. Lighting was provided by either a 1000 watt Photoflex Starlite in a 3' gridded Octodome or two AF-540's on a dual flash bracket behind a shoot-thru umbrella. Enjoy! Thanks Legacy! Thanks Jim!
She was freezing her bum off in the cold garage with a fan blowing on her! We'd fire off 2-3 shots and she'd have to take a quick break!

I've always loved the one light approach... something so dramatic about it.
Dig your work! Your ease of working with your lovely model comes through these great shots!
Amazing that last shot is a single light... putting out some broad power there!
