Sticky: Wanted: Adobe Lens Profiles

I can't speak for that combination specifically, but I would think it possible because I've been using K7-made profiles on a K200D. Also, I've found that I can use the same profile for RAW and JPEGs. The profile was made for RAW, but by doing a find/replace for 'true' and replacing it with 'false' in a text editor, it's just as happy to do JPEGs.

As per Ira's message, I was just thinking the same. It was 07h00 here when the news broke and I've been watching Al Jazeera out of the corner of my eye ever since. Hope you and yours are doing okay Mike.

Thanks Voytech. I do like Volvos. My girlfriend picked up her step-father's old S60 and it's a beast. It drinks like a beast too, but wow is it well-suited to roadtripping.

Here's what one needs after a long drive:

It's been a rough start to the year, but I've finally managed to not only take some pictures with my Taks, but upload them too. Here's the first of them:

Lovely shot natestation. Was there a lot of post on the image, or is that just the natural beauty of the Alaskan sky?

Nope Mike, don't recall having seen that one before. I think I'd remember the legs.

Glad you got the Katz-Eye - I consider that something one has to add to the budget (like a spare battery) when getting a new camera. I've been lusting after a K-5 exclusively for the the high ISO. Your 12800 shots from the other day look like 800 shots on my K200D. I suppose I best get saving.

Do let us know if anything else about it wows you.

On an unrelated note, hi all. I've been quietly watching but haven't had anything to post for a while. I went to Kenya for three weeks over xmas, but didn't take any takumars in case they got stolen. Since I've been back home I've been doing mostly paid assignments, none of which have seen much tak use either. I've also been looking for more serious work, and dealing with a family crisis, so snapping has had to take a back seat.

I stuck my camera on the back of a tak today (as Mike will attest, cameras go on lenses, not the other way around) but didn't shoot anything. C'est la vie.

A great many great photos have been posted here of late. I look forward to adding to their number again soon. Keep up the good work folks.

Questions about keeping my Super Takumar 50 1,4 first version 8 elements

As Ira rightly points out, it looks like the price is only going to go up, so hang onto it if you can afford to. I've got an early 8 element version and an SMC, and while I can barely tell the images from them apart, the SMC is definitely less prone to flair - as a result it's the one I turn to more often. If I was going to get rid of one it would probably be the 8 element version. I hang onto it more for collector's sake than anything else.

This started out as a test shot to check exposure so I could take a shot with a recently purchased Yashica 635, but I loved the colours. I'm also rather partial to the checkerboard building which is relatively new (and sadly destined to be inhabited by lawyers I believe).

The first time I lived in London I had a Kiwi housemate who bought some cowboy boots in Camden. I was too skint to do likewise, and have longed for a pair ever since. As you can imagine, they're a tricky item to find in my part of the world.

Last weekend, while visiting a nearby flea market I paid a visit to a second-hand stall stall where I bought a great knee-length, Italian-made, winter coat last winter for around $50... and low and behold they now sell second-hand boots too.

These ticked all the necessary boxes (brown, not too elaborately patterned with stitching, pointed toes, wooden heel), and most importantly, they fit like a glove. Of course, it's mid-summer here, with daily highs around 30 degrees celcius, so I won't be wearing them much before April or May.

Impact of a cheap UV filter

Like Wheatfield, some casual tests a couple of years back have made me take the UV filters off every single one of my lenses. I use a hood, and if I'm going to the coast or somewhere similar I'll take filters and use them when it's prudent.

I used to have the slap-a-filter-on-everything fear, but then I realised that lenses are tougher than I think, and that my paranoia makes me use lens hood and be generally careful anyway. I'd rather have better images and take my chances.

Ira and erkie, thanks for the info. Consider me somewhat flabbergasted. I'm somewhat relieved we don't have those sorts of services here - our roads are mad enough.

v5planet's pic reminded me of another South African peculiarity... we don't put in our own petrol. That's right, there are people employed to do it for you. If you're filling up they'll clean the windscreen and check oil and water (if you like) while you wait. Naturally it's customary to tip (but thankfully not 10% of the bill, or that would get pricey).

I think the reason is twofold. Firstly, they call it 'job creation', and secondly, I don't think petrol stations trust their patrons not to just fill up and leave without paying. All the forecourts have cameras, but there's also the tendency to steal other people's license plates. Besides, as many crummy television shows have demonstrated, cameras don't always deter the feeble-minded criminal element - or the desperate. If the daily papers are any indication, we've got a healthy quantity of both.

Here's another early-morning downtown shot:

I'm curious Ira, why does pub have inverted commas? Is it a euphemism for strip joint or something?

While I like a burning car as much as the next happy snapper, what really got me was the drive-thru ATM. I've never seen one of those. In fact, until now, I didn't know they existed. God bless America (and the bank thereof).

Do you have drive-thru bottle stores like the Aussies do? Those really surprised me the first time I saw them. Coming from a country where drunk driving is worryingly prolific, it seemed a really peculiar idea.

Here's one (of a few to follow) from a recent early morning wander around a predominantly Muslim area of Johannesburg called Fordsburg:

Hi Johan,

I'm in Jo'burg and would love to take the gear off your hands. I've got the perfect room for a dark room and been threatening to set one up for ages as I'm primarily shooting b&w film these days and the processing and scanning costs are killing me... plus, there's that ineffable charm about processing your own.

Anyway, I'll gladly share what little I've learnt about film in the process. Drop me a message here, or a PM, or you can contact me through my site below.

Lovely shot Mike, the detail and the texture are almost tangible.

Here's another from a post-dawn downtown walkabout with a friend:

Great shot! It's pleasantly strange seeing a scene like that when it's late Spring here.

Here's one from a walkabout downtown after dawn on a Sunday. I can't remember what sort of film it was, other than that is was 400ASA.

Can any K-5 owners (or K-7 if the bodies are so similar) tell me if the port for a cable release/intervalometer still takes a standard 2.5mm jack like the K200D/K20D?
