If this can help, here are two comparaisons between different Pentax portrait lens. It's in French, but the pictures speak for themselves.

Les tests de MonuniversPentax.com

Test_85mm

In my eye, the A 85mm 1.4 is clearly superior to the FA 77, but that's just me. I would even go as far as to say it's the best lens tested.

So which 28mm is the sharpest?

I have the K 28/3.5 and it's my sharpest lens between f5.6 and f8. Even the FA 31 Ltd can't match it in that range. Colors are Pentax excellent.

Thanks for the explanation. These kind of situation are very frustrating for the customers, but I understand that it is out of your control. The only problem with return for customers like me who live outside of USA (Canada in my case) is we have to pay taxes when you ship the replacement item back and then fill all the paperwork to get a reimbursement from our "cash hungry" government. If you could do something about that, it would be very much appreciated. For example, if there could be a clear statement on the package saying "exchange at no additional cost", it could help.

I ordered a 12-24for that price at Adorama 1,5 years ago and the lens I got was a total piece of crap. Scratch on the hood, huge back focus, decentered. I returned it a got a new one. The second was perfect. Be very carefull when you receive the lens.

DA 12-24 and FA 31ltd. I know, the 31 is not on your list, but I had to mention it. Else, I would go with the DA 35 Ltd.

What is the Best Focal Length for a Portrait Lens?

I own some of the lens mentioned by pp and her is my tak on them:

DA* 50-135
Excellent overall. Sharp and razor sharp between 70 and 85mm. Bokeh is very good, but not as creamy as I expected. Colors are a little oversaturated, but it can be fixed in PP.

FA 50 1.4
Excellent bokeh and very sharp from f2.0 on. However, I feel it is not quite long enough to completely eliminate the "big nose small ears" effect.

K 85 1.8
Extraordinary bokeh and very sharp from f2.0 on. No "big nose small ears effect". Hard to focus properly because of thin DOF.

Overall, I would say that the DA* 50-135 is my best bet if I don't need super creamy bokeh. It's flexible and reasonably fast.

Hi everyone. I am in the process of buying a K series lens. The overall condition is good, but it's missing the little white ball that helps turn the lens when monting on the body. Anyone know if it can be replaced?

I use mine with a Pentax AF 1.7 adapter and I am very pleased with the results. Focus is fast but you must prefocus by hand in the first place.

My favorite 4 lens combo is the following:

DA 12-24
FA 31 Ltd
DA* 50-135
DA* 300

If you want only three, I would drop the DA* 300. Otherwise, this combo is hard to beat in terms of flexibility.

On this site, you can find a comparaison between some Pentax and non pentax lens at about 15mm (DA 15 Ltd, DA* 16-50, DA 12-24, DA 14, DA 10-17 ou Sigma DC 10-20 ). It's in French, but you can judge from the pictures. IMHO, the Da 12-24 is a clear winner.

Limited's vs. "K" Lenses....

I have a K 85 f1.8 and love it. I hesitated a long time before buying it. The FA 77 is an incredible lens, but a very expensive one compare to the K85. I paid 200 $ for mine and it's in excellent condition. However, like the previous posters said, if you need AF, go with the FA77. If you intend to use it as a portait lens in studio, the K85 is a good choice. Yes, the K85 especially hard to focus at f1.8 but I don't care personally since the DOF is so small at f1.8 that when you focus on one eye, the tip of the nose is OOF. Plus, I like the bokeh of the K85 better (my personal taste only), especially at f4.

Looking through a lens with a light is pretty scary. Most of my lens look perfect in normal light, but I can find tiny dust in all of them.
